To reduce sports posts on X, add the relevant words, phrases, and hashtags under Muted words. You can apply each entry to your Home timeline, Notifications, or both. This filters matching text in those documented areas—it does not block every sports post or recommendation on X.
Mute sports words and hashtags on X
- Open the Notifications tab and select its settings or gear control.
- Go to Muted → Muted words → Add.
- Enter a sports-related word, phrase, or hashtag, then choose whether it applies to Home timeline, Notifications, or both.
- Select a duration and save. X lists Forever, 24 hours, 7 days, and 30 days as options.
Add entries individually. For example, you might add a league name, team name, player name, and commonly used hashtag as separate entries. The exact placement of controls can vary between X for iOS, Android, and desktop. If the labels or layout differ, follow the current instructions in X’s advanced muting help.
What a muted word catches
X says muted-word matching is case-insensitive, so muting “NBA” also matches “nba.” Muting a word also mutes its hashtag: X’s example says muting “unicorn” covers both “unicorn” and “#unicorn.” You can include punctuation within a phrase, but punctuation at the end is not required. To target mentions of a particular username as text, include the @ sign; that does not mute the account itself. X Help Center explains these matching rules.
Where the filter applies—and where it does not
X states that “Muting words and hashtags only applies to your notifications and Home timeline.” Search results can still show posts containing muted words. Muting is therefore a way to reduce matching content in the selected areas, not a universal topic block.

It also does not guarantee that sports content disappears from every recommendation surface. X describes the For You timeline as including posts from followed accounts and Topics as well as recommendations; its muted-word instructions do not promise suppression across every such surface. There is also an exception for some mobile alerts: if you opted in to mobile notifications when an account you follow posts, X says muted words and hashtags do not apply to those alerts. X’s help page describes this exception.

Choose the control that matches what you want to reduce

A followed Topic is another distinct control: X describes Topics as one of the elements that can inform For You content, while muted words are documented for the Home timeline and Notifications. Do not treat either control as a guarantee that all sports-related content will be removed.
Edit or remove a muted entry
Return to Notifications → settings or gear → Muted → Muted words to review your entries. From there, change an entry’s settings or remove it if you no longer want it applied. Labels and placement may vary by app or website interface; X’s advanced muting instructions are the reference for the current documented controls.
