There is no universal one-click export from Google Home to an unrelated smart home hub. The safe approach is a staged migration: document your devices and routines, prepare the new hub and network, add or share devices, rebuild automations, test every trigger, and remove the old bindings only after the replacement works.

What actually moves—and what does not

Google Home stores device connections, room assignments, routines, voice starters, conditions and actions as part of its own home and integration model. Google does not document a universal export that imports all of those objects into an unrelated hub. A new platform therefore needs a deliberate rebuild rather than a restore from Google Home.

Matter makes part of the transition easier. A compatible Matter device can be controlled from multiple certified smart-home apps, allowing a staged migration when both platforms support the device type and its features. That does not guarantee that a camera history, subscription, proprietary scene, or every device capability will appear on the new platform.

Google says that removing a Matter device from a Google Home removes it from the original home, resets its settings, and removes automations or routines attached to it. Treat removal as a destructive step and keep an inventory before you begin.

Check the destination hub and network first

Matter and radio requirements

A Matter-enabled hub is required to add and control Matter devices in Google Home. Google lists Google TV Streamer (4K), Google Home and Nest speakers and displays, and Nest Wifi Pro as Google Home hubs. A home that combines Thread and Wi-Fi Matter devices needs a hub with Thread border-router capability; Google lists Google TV Streamer (4K) as supporting both Wi-Fi and Thread.

Devices using other protocols still need matching hardware or a supported integration. List whether each device uses Matter over Wi-Fi, Matter over Thread, ordinary Wi-Fi, Zigbee, Z-Wave, or a manufacturer cloud. A hub that supports only Matter cannot directly replace a Zigbee or Z-Wave controller unless an additional bridge or integration is available.

Network prerequisites

  • Enable IPv6 on the home network. Google identifies IPv6 as necessary for reliable Matter operation.
  • Place the new hub where it has a stable network connection and, for Thread networks, suitable radio coverage.
  • Update hub and device firmware before pairing. A firmware requirement can prevent a device from appearing during setup.
  • Confirm that the destination platform supports the device category and the specific features you use, such as lock controls, thermostat modes, media playback, presence, notifications, or camera functions.

Compare architectures before choosing one

Architecture Best fit What transfers automatically Main limitation
Another Google Home Matter hub A Matter-first household that wants to stay in Google Home Compatible Matter devices can be commissioned to the destination home; routines still need checking or rebuilding Removing a device from the old Google Home resets settings and attached routines
SmartThings hub replacement A SmartThings installation replacing or upgrading its controller SmartThings Hub Replace is designed to transfer devices and routine setups to a new hub It applies to the supported SmartThings hub-replacement path, not a general Google Home import
Home Assistant as the automation layer Users who want advanced or local automations while retaining selected Google voice controls Selected entities can be exposed to Google Home and synchronized Each integration and device feature must be configured separately; hardware and program availability vary

SmartThings lists the Aeotec Smart Home Hub among hubs supported for its replacement and backup features. Verify the current supported-hub list before buying or migrating, because compatibility can change.

Build an inventory before changing anything

Do not start by deleting devices. Create a migration sheet or export your notes to a file you can consult while rebuilding. Google reports more than 80,000 compatible Works with Google Home devices on its current compatibility page, but compatibility with one platform does not imply identical support on another.

Record every device

  • Device name, room, manufacturer, model and current firmware.
  • Protocol: Matter over Wi-Fi, Matter over Thread, Wi-Fi cloud integration, Zigbee, Z-Wave, or another method.
  • Manufacturer account used for the integration, including the sign-in method and any two-factor authentication.
  • Whether the device is shared from another household, depends on a bridge, or has a battery that must be awake during pairing.
  • Current Google Home room assignment, device groups, favorite status and naming conventions.
  • Features you actually use: brightness or color, lock state, thermostat modes, media targets, sensors, cameras, notifications and energy data.

Capture every routine

Open each routine and copy its spoken phrase, schedule or event starter, conditions, actions, delays, presence dependency, media target, notification text and any custom Google Assistant command. Note which devices are referenced and which room they belong to. A routine that appears to be one command may contain several hidden conditions or actions.

  • Up to 4K HDR with Dolby Vision delivers captivating, true-to-life detail[4]; and you can connect speakers that support Dolby Atmos for more immersive 3D sound

Google defines routines as sets of starters and actions. A device must be in the same home as the routine, and a device that does not support routines does not appear as an available starter or action. Routine availability also varies by region and language. Record these limitations rather than assuming the destination hub will expose the same choices.

Preserve recovery information

  • Photograph or save Matter QR codes and setup keys before moving equipment. If a code is printed on a device, keep a readable copy.
  • Write down the old hub’s network, account and room structure.
  • Keep the old hub powered and connected until the replacement has passed real-world tests.
  • For cloud integrations, confirm you can sign in again before unlinking an account.

Prepare the new hub in a safe order

  1. Install the controller. Update its firmware, connect it to the intended network and complete the destination home’s basic location, account and room setup.
  2. Configure required radios. Enable Thread border-router support for Thread devices and add any required Zigbee or Z-Wave coordinator. Do not assume a Matter hub includes those radios.
  3. Verify IPv6 and local discovery. Check the router’s IPv6 setting and avoid client-isolation or guest-network settings that block discovery between the hub and devices.
  4. Create rooms and naming rules. Reproduce the old room names where possible. Decide on unambiguous names for duplicate devices before routines are rebuilt.
  5. Connect manufacturer accounts. Add the destination platform’s official integration for non-Matter cloud devices and complete authorization. Expect to reauthorize services even when the same account was previously linked to Google Home.

Move Matter devices between Google Homes

For a Matter device moving from one Google Home to another Google Home, Google documents a remove-and-add sequence. Because removal resets settings and attached automations, perform it one device at a time and update your inventory immediately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the Google Home app and select the existing home containing the Matter device.
  2. Open the device settings and choose the option to remove the device from that home.
  3. Factory-reset the device when the device’s instructions or the app require it. A reset can erase local settings, calibrations or customizations.
  4. Switch the Google Home app to the destination home.
  5. Choose Add device, select the Matter setup flow, and scan the device’s Matter QR code or enter its setup key.
  6. Assign the device to the destination room, choose its final name and complete commissioning.
  7. Confirm that the device responds from the destination home before moving to the next one.

The exact reset method is device-specific. If a device fails to appear after a reset, check that the destination home has a Matter-enabled hub, IPv6 is enabled, the phone is on the correct local network, and the device is close enough for its radio connection.

Add non-Matter devices to the destination

For a Wi-Fi, Zigbee, Z-Wave or manufacturer-cloud device, use the destination platform’s integration rather than the Matter QR-code flow. Sign in to the manufacturer account, authorize the requested permissions, select the devices to import, and assign rooms and names. If the device is attached to a vendor bridge, add the bridge first and then expose its child devices.

Expect to recreate scenes, groups and room relationships when the destination platform models devices differently. A cloud integration may expose only a subset of the controls that Google Home showed. Check each device’s feature list before rebuilding a routine around it.

Google Home element Destination equivalent to look for Migration check
Voice phrase Voice trigger, scene phrase, or retained Google Home routine Say the exact phrase and test alternate wording if the platform requires it
Scheduled starter Time schedule, calendar event, sunrise or sunset trigger Check time zone, daylight-saving behavior and repeat days
Presence or geofence Home/away state, phone presence, location event Confirm permissions and the accounts allowed to change presence
Sensor starter Motion, contact, temperature, humidity or occupancy event Check supported event types, cooldowns and sensor battery state
Condition Conditional block, guard, expression or separate automation Verify whether multiple conditions are treated as all-required or any-required
Device action Native command for the destination device entity Confirm the same mode, level, color, lock state or thermostat setting exists
Custom Assistant command Native action, script, webhook, or a routine left in Google Home Do not assume an Assistant-only phrase has a destination equivalent
Media and notification action Destination media player, announcement or notification service Test target selection, volume, delay and whether the service requires internet access

Replace custom commands where possible

Custom Google Assistant commands often depend on Google-only parsing or a particular integration. Replace them with native actions on the new hub when an equivalent exists. If there is no equivalent, keep that portion in Google Home during the transition or split the routine into a destination automation plus a Google voice routine.

Preserve logic, not just the visible steps

Recreate delays, order of operations and conditions exactly. For example, a motion starter that turns on a light, waits two minutes, checks occupancy and then turns the light off is not equivalent to two independent automations. Write down the intended result in plain language, then implement and test each branch on the destination hub.

Use a staged, cross-platform migration when possible

Matter’s multi-admin design allows compatible devices to be controlled from multiple certified apps. When both platforms support the same device type and features, leave the device available in Google Home while commissioning or sharing it with the new Matter platform. This lets you migrate room by room and test new automations before retiring the old binding.

Do not assume every Matter device feature is available in both apps. Device-type support changes over time, and a platform may expose basic on/off control while omitting advanced settings. Test locks, cameras, thermostats, media controls, sensors and notifications individually.

Keep Google voice control with Home Assistant

Home Assistant can serve as the automation layer while selected entities remain visible in Google Home. Expose only the entities you want Google Home to control, then use Home Assistant’s Request sync action when entity names or capabilities change. Home Assistant Cloud can synchronize changes automatically. This arrangement preserves Google voice control for chosen devices while new automations run in Home Assistant, but every integration still needs its own setup and feature verification.

Test before deleting the old setup

Testing must include both a manual run and the real event that starts the routine. Keep the old setup available until each replacement has completed at least one normal trigger cycle.

  • Run the automation from its app control and confirm every action occurs in the intended order.
  • Trigger it through its real schedule, voice phrase, sensor event, geofence or presence change.
  • Check lights, locks, thermostats, media playback, notifications and delays separately.
  • Test conditions that should prevent the routine from running, not only the successful path.
  • Disconnect internet access briefly if the destination claims local operation, then verify which actions still work and which correctly fail.
  • Review the destination platform’s activity or event log for delayed, rejected or duplicated actions.
  • Check that a routine cannot operate the wrong device because two rooms or names are similar.

Keep a rollback path

Do not factory-reset every device at once. Migrate a small group, verify it, and then continue. If a routine fails, restore the old binding or leave the old routine intact while you correct the destination automation. A staged rollback is much easier than reconstructing an entire home from memory.

Common failure modes and fixes

The Matter device is not discovered

  • Confirm the destination has a Matter-enabled hub and, for Thread devices, a Thread border router.
  • Enable IPv6 and ensure the phone and hub are on the same usable network.
  • Move the device closer to the hub, wake a battery device, and retry commissioning.
  • Use the saved QR code or setup key. If the device was not fully removed from the old home, follow the manufacturer’s reset procedure before trying again.

The device appears but lacks controls

The destination may support the Matter device type but not the specific feature, or the manufacturer integration may expose fewer capabilities. Check the platform’s current support and rebuild the routine around controls that are actually available. Do not substitute a generic on/off action for a lock, thermostat or safety-critical command without testing the result.

A routine trigger is missing

Google excludes devices that do not support routines from the available starter and action lists, and routine options vary by region and language. The destination may impose a different limitation. Replace the trigger with a supported sensor, schedule or native event, or retain that routine in Google Home.

Cloud devices stop responding

Reauthorize the manufacturer account, check whether the destination integration is online, and verify that the device was not left attached only to the old bridge. If the service requires a subscription or a particular account owner, confirm those requirements before unlinking Google Home.

Automations run twice

During a staged migration, the old Google routine and the new automation may both remain active. Disable one trigger at a time after the replacement has passed testing, then inspect the activity logs for duplicate starters.

How to compare destination platforms

If you have not selected a hub, compare the capabilities that determine migration effort rather than choosing solely by device count.

Decision area Questions to answer
Protocol coverage Does it support Matter over Wi-Fi and Thread plus the Zigbee, Z-Wave and vendor-cloud devices already installed?
Automation portability Is there a documented hub-replacement or routine-transfer feature, or will every automation be rebuilt manually?
Local operation Which important routines continue when the internet is unavailable, and which depend on a cloud service?
Voice continuity Can Google Home or Google Assistant continue controlling selected devices during and after migration?
Feature depth Are locks, cameras, thermostats, media, presence, notifications and advanced sensor events supported?
Recovery and backup Can the hub be replaced, configured from a backup, or restored after a failure?

When to remove the old Google Home bindings

Retire old bindings only after the destination has the final room names, all required devices, tested routines and a known rollback plan. Remove devices individually or by a clearly documented group. For Matter devices, remember that removing them from the original Google Home can reset settings and delete attached routines; save any final configuration details first.

After cleanup, review voice commands, room assignments, shared household access and notifications. Remove obsolete routines so they cannot trigger a device that has moved, and check the activity log for failed references to deleted entities.

Bottom line

Plan this as a controlled rebuild, not a single export. Inventory first, choose a hub with the necessary radios and IPv6-ready network, add devices through the correct Matter or manufacturer flow, recreate routines with explicit trigger and action mapping, use Matter sharing or Home Assistant synchronization for a gradual transition, and keep the old setup until real triggers succeed. The result is reliable because every device capability and automation branch has been verified rather than assumed to have transferred.
