Yes. You can download your Google Docs files and use another editor, but leaving successfully means choosing a replacement, checking how your files behave there, and moving collaborators—not just pressing Export. Google supports downloading Docs, Sheets, and Slides for backup or transfer. Neither that nor the alternative services’ format support guarantees that every comment, suggestion, layout detail, or version history will transfer intact.

What “escaping Google Docs” actually involves

There are two separate decisions: getting copies of your documents out, and deciding where you will work and share them next. You can download individual files or use Google’s Download Your Data service to export Docs, Sheets, and Slides. That makes copying and backup possible; it does not establish a lossless migration of every feature or a complete transfer of your Google account.

Before choosing an editor, identify what your workflow depends on: simultaneous editing, comments and suggestions, DOCX compatibility, offline access, privacy, and files linked from Drive. A document that opens is not necessarily a document whose layout and review workflow survived unchanged.

Check what you want to change about Google Docs

Leaving may be the right choice for your workflow, but it is not the only way to address a concern about access or privacy. Google says new files are Restricted by default, so only the owner and people specifically invited can access them. The setting to inspect is General access: “Anyone with the link” allows people with the URL to access a file. Google says that setting does not automatically put a document in search results unless its link is posted on a public, crawlable site. See Google’s sharing and access documentation.

Google also says its Workspace service does not scan private Docs, Sheets, Slides, Vids, or Drive content to train its foundational AI models, and that user files are encrypted in transit and at rest. These are Google’s statements about its service, not end-to-end encryption: Google’s ordinary encryption model should not be confused with a design in which the provider cannot decrypt the files.

For eligible work or school accounts: client-side encryption

Some Workspace organizations can use client-side encryption, which an administrator must enable and which requires identity verification. Google says it cannot decrypt files protected this way. It is a specialized organizational setting, not a consumer switch, and the trade-offs are substantial: one editor at a time, different autosave behavior, and unavailable features including mobile editing, comments on Drive files, grammar check, voice typing, add-ons, and downloading Docs or Slides. Details are in Google’s client-side encryption documentation.

Choose a replacement by the work it needs to do

Option Documented strengths Important qualification
Proton Docs in Proton Drive Proton says Docs uses end-to-end encryption; supports simultaneous collaboration and DOCX upload and editing; and can download documents as DOCX, PDF, TXT, Markdown, or HTML. These are Proton’s product claims. The listed formats and features do not establish parity with Google Docs or guarantee that imported files retain all formatting and review features.
Microsoft Word Microsoft documents coauthoring for supported modern formats such as DOCX when files are in supported shared storage, such as OneDrive or SharePoint. Microsoft says it does not support coauthoring documents stored on Google Drive. Exact plan or license requirements for features are not established here.

Choose Proton Docs if end-to-end encryption is the priority

Proton describes Docs in Proton Drive as end-to-end encrypted, including document names, content, edits, comments, and suggestions. It says users can invite others to view or edit and that several collaborators can work at once. Proton also lists DOCX upload and editing, with downloads in DOCX, PDF, TXT, Markdown, and HTML. Those details make it a candidate if encryption and collaborative editing are central; they do not prove that every Google Docs feature or file will behave identically. See Proton’s Docs feature page.

Choose Word if your collaborators work in Office formats

Word coauthoring depends on more than the editor: Microsoft requires supported apps, edit permission, a supported shared storage location such as OneDrive or SharePoint, and a compatible modern format such as DOCX. Microsoft explicitly says it does not support coauthoring documents stored on Google Drive. An offline collaborator’s changes will not be visible to others until reconnection, and Microsoft describes conflict handling for that situation. See Microsoft’s Word coauthoring guidance.

Prepare Google Docs for offline work while you decide

You do not have to migrate just to work without a connection. Google’s documented offline setup requires three actions:

  1. Install the Google Docs Offline extension in Chrome.
  2. In Google Drive settings, turn on offline access.
  3. For each file you need, mark it Available offline.

Follow Google’s offline access instructions. Set this up before disconnecting; offline access is not automatic for every file.

Move a sample before moving everything

A staged migration helps uncover compatibility and access problems before your everyday workflow depends on the new service. Keep a separate backup of the exported files, and do not delete the originals until collaborators have confirmed they can use the replacement.

  1. Inventory the work. Identify high-value documents, Drive-linked files, collaborators, and dependencies such as simultaneous editing, comments, suggestions, or Office compatibility.
  2. Export a representative sample. Include documents with varied formatting and review needs, not just a simple text file. Google explains how to download your Google data.
  3. Open and inspect the sample in the intended editor. Check layout, formatting, comments, suggestions, and the editing workflow manually. The available documentation does not guarantee full export fidelity.
  4. Choose and configure the replacement. Match it to your priorities for privacy, collaboration, file compatibility, and offline work. Verify sharing settings and permissions before inviting others.
  5. Move in stages and retain a backup. A local copy, including one on an external drive, is an optional backup destination—not a requirement for leaving Google Docs.
  6. Confirm collaborator access before removing originals. Test that invited people can open and edit what they need in the new location.

Which path makes sense?

  • Concerned about accidental access? Review each file’s General access setting first; Restricted is Google’s default for new files.
  • Need provider-described end-to-end encryption and live collaboration? Evaluate Proton Docs, then verify your real files and sharing workflow with a sample.
  • Depend on Word and DOCX collaboration? Use Word with supported shared storage rather than expecting supported coauthoring on Google Drive.
  • Only need occasional offline access? Set up Google Docs Offline and mark the required files available before going offline.
  • Need every review detail or historical version preserved? Do not assume an export will preserve it. Test the features you rely on before committing to a move.
