For an Indian citizen planning to live in Switzerland for more than 90 days, the route is not simply to book a flight and register after arrival. You generally need a national visa and cantonal authorization for the intended stay; for employment, the employer usually starts the work-permit application. After arriving, register with your local commune within 14 days—and do so before starting work.

How can I move to Switzerland from India?

Start by identifying why you are moving and how long you intend to stay. Switzerland treats short visits differently from stays longer than 90 days, and work, study, family reunification and other residence purposes have different requirements. The competent canton handles or coordinates important parts of an individual case, so there is no single permit checklist for every Indian applicant.

  1. Choose the route that matches your purpose. The Embassy of Switzerland in India distinguishes short stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period from national-visa applications for stays exceeding 90 days. Long-term study, family reunification and marriage in Switzerland are examples of long-stay purposes.
  2. Contact the authority responsible for your intended canton. A long-stay application is subject to authorization by the cantonal migration authority. Employment applications also go through the relevant cantonal authority. Confirm the required evidence and current process for your route.
  3. Use the correct Embassy checklist. The Embassy provides separate national-visa checklists for students, family reunification and applicants who already have authorization to enter Switzerland. Use the checklist matching your case and check whether the canton requires additional documents.
  4. Wait for the required approvals and visa before travelling. Entry permission and local registration are separate stages; registering after arrival does not replace the authorizations needed to enter.
  5. Arrange an address and plan your arrival registration. Ask the destination commune how appointments work and what evidence it requires for your particular status.
  6. Complete the settlement tasks on arrival. Register with the commune within 14 days, and arrange compulsory health insurance within the applicable deadline.

The Embassy of Switzerland in India gives an approximate processing time of 8–12 weeks for national-visa applications in its 2026 guidance. It cautions that the time can vary considerably by canton and case, so treat the estimate as a planning guide, not a guaranteed decision date.

Do Indian citizens need a visa to live in Switzerland?

Generally, yes: an Indian citizen planning a stay exceeding 90 days follows the national-visa and residence-authorization route. The Embassy of Switzerland in India says a national visa for a stay longer than 90 days is subject to authorization from the migration authority responsible for the intended Swiss residence. The correct process depends on the purpose of the stay; the 90-day short-stay framework is not a residence permit.

For employment, the permit decision and entry visa are related but distinct steps. The State Secretariat for Migration (SEM) describes a process in which the canton first examines the work-permit application; approved applications go to SEM for federal review, and the visa-authorization process follows the necessary approval. Follow the instructions attached to your own case rather than assuming that a job offer or visa checklist alone grants permission to work or reside.

How do I get a Swiss work permit from India?

Indian nationals are subject to Switzerland’s third-country employment rules. A prospective Swiss employer normally applies to the cantonal employment or immigration authority on the candidate’s behalf. A job offer does not itself authorize employment.

What the employer generally has to establish

The employer generally must show that it could not find a suitable candidate in Switzerland or an EU/EFTA state. SEM says admission for third-country workers is limited and generally aimed at highly qualified candidates. Its general description emphasizes university graduates or other highly qualified specialists with professional experience. The canton assesses the case, so eligibility depends on the job, qualifications and applicable requirements.

What happens after the application

  1. The employer submits the application to the competent cantonal authority.
  2. The canton examines it; an approved application is sent to SEM for federal review.
  3. After the required approvals, follow the instructions for visa authorization and entry.
  4. Once in Switzerland, register with the commune where you live within 14 days. You must register before taking up work.

Use written updates from the employer and authorities to plan resignation and travel. Do not treat an offer, an application in progress or an expected decision as work authorization.

Which Swiss residence permit applies to me?

Foreign nationals staying in Switzerland for more than three months need a permit, but the category is determined by circumstances such as nationality, purpose and length of stay. Applications are handled by cantonal migration or employment authorities, usually in coordination with the commune.

Reason for the move What the guidance establishes Where to confirm the route
Employment The employer generally applies to the canton; third-country admission is limited and aimed at highly qualified candidates. The employer and the competent cantonal employment or migration authority.
Long-term study A stay exceeding 90 days follows the national-visa route; the Embassy provides a student checklist. The intended canton and the Embassy of Switzerland in India checklist for students.
Family reunification A qualifying third-country resident may seek reunification for a spouse or registered partner and unmarried children under 18, subject to the applicable conditions. The competent canton and the Embassy checklist for family reunification.
Other or non-working residence The applicable category and evidence depend on individual circumstances; a universal route is not established by the general guidance. The migration authority for the intended canton.

Swiss public guidance lists categories for third-country nationals including L, B, C, Ci, G, F and N. These are not interchangeable options from which every newcomer can choose. Ask the canton which category and evidence apply to your intended purpose and status.

When do I have to register after arriving in Switzerland?

Register with the communal authority in the place where you live within 14 days of arrival. If you are moving for a job, complete registration before you start work. Both the Swiss Confederation’s work guidance and SEM state these requirements.

The federal guidance does not establish one document checklist or appointment process for every commune and permit type. Contact your commune or canton before arrival for its current appointment instructions and evidence list. Registration is a local arrival step, not a substitute for obtaining the entry visa or prior authorization required for your route.

How do I find housing before registering?

You will need to plan for accommodation in the place where you intend to live and ask the commune what it accepts as evidence for registration in your situation. The official guidance covered here does not establish a universal rental-document list, deposit amount, rent level or city-by-city availability. Check current listings and lease conditions for the specific canton or city rather than relying on a national estimate.

If you are applying for family reunification, housing is also part of the immigration assessment: Swiss guidance requires accommodation adequate for the family under Swiss standards. It does not define that condition here by a fixed apartment size. Confirm how the canton assesses accommodation for your household before committing to a lease.

Can I bring my spouse and children?

Swiss guidance for third-country residents says a resident may apply for family reunification for a spouse or registered partner and unmarried children under 18, subject to permit status and the applicable conditions. Switzerland must recognize the marriage or registered partnership.

  • The family must have accommodation considered large enough under Swiss standards.
  • The sponsor must not rely on social assistance.
  • A self-employed or unemployed sponsor must show sufficient financial resources.
  • In the specified situation where a spouse cannot communicate in the local national language, the guidance lists at least oral A1 ability or enrolment in a language course.

The canton decides the individual case. Check its current evidence requirements and the Embassy’s family-reunification checklist; do not assume that satisfying one condition guarantees approval.

When should I arrange Swiss health insurance?

Swiss health insurance is compulsory. The Swiss Confederation’s ch.ch work guidance says to insure yourself and your family no later than three months after arrival or beginning work. Confirm the applicable start date and coverage details for your own status with an insurer or official guidance. The family-reunification guidance also tells sponsors to arrange coverage for each family member.
