Move your contacts and photos as two separate jobs: export contacts from every place they’re stored, download or export cloud-only photos, then transfer and verify both on the exact minimalist phone you plan to use. Keep the old phone and a separate backup until you’ve checked the results. Import steps vary by model, so there is no reliable one-tap method that works for every minimalist phone.
1. Find where your contacts are stored
Before changing accounts or resetting your smartphone, check its Contacts settings and identify every account and storage location in use. Contacts may be saved to Google or another email account, iCloud, the SIM card, or only the device. A contact visible in the app is not necessarily synced to your cloud account: Google notes that some device and SIM contacts may not sync across signed-in devices.
- Look for contacts associated with each account shown in your phone’s Contacts settings.
- Check whether the phone has SIM or device-only contacts.
- If you use a work or school directory, note that some directory contacts may not be available for export.
2. Export a separate contacts backup
Save an export somewhere other than the old phone before you try importing anything. A vCard file, usually with a .vcf extension, is a common portable format, but the destination phone must still support importing it.

On Android
- Open Contacts.
- Tap Menu, then Settings.
- Choose Export, select the account or accounts to export, and save the resulting
.VCFfile. Google documents this workflow in its Android Contacts export instructions.
Contacts saved to a Google Account can appear on another phone after you sign in to that account. That does not cover contacts stored only on the device or SIM, so include those in your backup plan. Google says the option to sync device and SIM contacts to a Google Account depends on the phone’s make and model.

From iCloud
On a computer or tablet, sign in to iCloud.com Contacts, select one or more contacts, and export them as a vCard. A multi-contact export can be a single file. Apple notes that iCloud.com Contacts requires a computer or tablet.
From Google Contacts on a computer
Google Contacts can export selected contacts as a Google CSV file. Its export help cautions that work or school users may not be able to select every contact in the Directory. Google also documents importing vCard files through its contact import instructions.

Keep the exported file in a separate safe location. If your minimalist phone cannot import a vCard directly, a computer or contacts service may be able to convert or re-export it—but check the phone’s manual first, and do not assume a conversion will preserve every detail.

3. Check which photos are actually backed up
Review both the old phone’s local gallery and each cloud photo account you use. A thumbnail in a photo app does not prove that the full-resolution file is stored on the phone. Identify anything that exists only in the cloud before you switch devices or lose access to the old phone.

4. Download or export the photo library
Download individual items
On a computer, open Google Photos and download the items you need. Google’s instruction is: “To create a local copy on your computer, download your photo or video.” The operating system may assign a new timestamp to a downloaded file, while photo and video metadata remains available in file details. Check dates and order after downloading.
Export a larger library
For a large Google Photos library, use the Google Takeout Photos transfer flow to copy photos and videos to local storage. A computer with enough free space can hold the archive; an external drive is optional if you already have suitable storage. Google’s guidance is to choose a safe device with sufficient free space.

Do not remove the original cloud library while you are still checking the export. Google lists exclusions and limitations that can matter: unsupported formats, Locked Folder items, unsaved creations, trash content, manually edited metadata, and the video portion of some Motion or Live Photos may not transfer. If the motion/video portion matters, Google describes saving Motion and Live Photos as videos before transfer. Review the supported file types and transfer limitations and open the archive to check for missing items.
5. Check the minimalist phone before transferring
Find the exact model’s current manual or manufacturer support page. Confirm the details that determine whether your backups can be used:

- Whether it imports contacts, and which formats it accepts, such as VCF/vCard.
- Whether photos and videos can be copied to it, and which file formats it displays or plays.
- Its available storage and any supported transfer method or port.
Model compatibility determines the next step. The available Apple manual-transfer guidance, for example, is specifically about moving Android content to iPhone; it does not establish how a minimalist phone imports contacts or photos. Do not assume a cable, adapter, microSD card, or USB drive will work unless the selected model’s instructions confirm it.

6. Transfer, verify, and only then erase the old phone
- Use a transfer method the destination model explicitly supports. Import the contact export and copy photo files only after confirming compatible formats and storage.
- On the minimalist phone, open a sample of contacts and check names and phone numbers.
- Open a sample of photos and videos. Check that images display, dates and order are sensible, and videos play.
- Compare the destination with your separate exports and cloud library for anything important that is missing.
- Keep the old phone and backup files until you have verified the migration. Consider erasing the old phone only after those checks are complete.
