To move pictures to a microSD card on a compatible Samsung Galaxy phone or tablet, use My Files: select the photos in internal storage, choose Move or Copy, then set the SD card as the destination. Not every Galaxy model supports microSD, and the card appears in My Files only when it is inserted.
Before you start: check for microSD support
Samsung Galaxy models do not all have a microSD slot. Check support for your exact phone or tablet before buying a card or following these steps. Menu names and available options can also vary by model and software version. Samsung’s microSD guide explains compatibility and file transfers.
How to move existing camera pictures to an SD card
- Insert a compatible microSD card into your device.
- Open My Files.
- Tap Internal storage, then open DCIM and Camera. This is the camera-image folder path Samsung identifies in its My Files guide.
- Touch and hold a picture to select it. Select any additional pictures you want to transfer.
- Tap Move to relocate the selected files, or Copy to leave the originals in internal storage.
- Return to the My Files home screen and tap SD card.
- Open the destination folder, then tap Move here or Copy here.
You can also use the Images category in My Files to find pictures from more than one folder. Selection controls can vary by software version; the key is to choose the files in My Files and set the SD card as the destination.
Move or copy: which should you choose?
- Move relocates the selected files from internal storage to the card.
- Copy creates a second copy on the card and keeps the originals in internal storage.
If you want a second copy, choose Copy and check that the files open from the SD card before deleting anything from internal storage. A move relocates files; it is not, by itself, a backup.

Gallery albums and file transfers are different
To transfer picture files between internal storage and an SD card, Samsung US directs users to My Files rather than Gallery. Gallery can move or copy pictures between albums, which changes how they are organized in the app; that is different from choosing a storage destination. Samsung documents album actions in its Gallery guide. Samsung UK also describes creating an album on an SD card on compatible devices in its SD card guide.
Save new camera pictures to the SD card
On supported devices, the Camera app may offer an SD card as a storage location for new pictures. If your device supports microSD, open the Camera app’s settings and look for Storage location, then select SD card if that option is available. This setting is not universal; Samsung’s instructions for using an SD card document it for compatible phones.

If the SD card or pictures are missing
SD card does not appear in My Files
Check that the card is fully inserted and that your exact Galaxy model supports microSD. Samsung says the SD card destination appears in My Files when a card is inserted. If your device has no SD slot, this workflow cannot use an SD-card destination; Samsung describes external USB storage as a separate option on supported models in its file-management guide.
Camera pictures are not in the folder you expected
For camera photos, start at My Files > Internal storage > DCIM > Camera. Other pictures may be stored in different folders, so use the Images category in My Files if you do not find them there.
