You can move existing photos from a Samsung Galaxy phone or tablet to a microSD card only if that exact model has a card slot. Check that first. If it does, the most dependable method is My Files: select the photos, choose Move or Copy, and send them to a folder on the card. Samsung notes that menus and settings vary by model, software version, and carrier, so if your screen differs from the steps below, look for the same options under the same folders.

Step 1: Confirm your Galaxy model supports microSD

A memory card is useful only when the device has a slot for one, and Samsung does not give every Galaxy phone and tablet a microSD slot. Before you buy a card or follow any card-based steps:

  • Note the exact model name or model number of your device.
  • Check Samsung’s support specifications for that model and confirm it lists microSD support.
  • Confirm the card size and type you plan to buy is within the range that model accepts (see the card guide below).

If your model has no card slot, skip to the alternatives section at the end of this guide.

Move existing photos with My Files

My Files is the general file-management route Samsung documents for moving or copying files to a card. Choose between the two actions before you start:

Option What happens to the original photo Use it when
Move The file is removed from its original location and placed on the card. You want to free space in internal storage.
Copy The original stays in internal storage, and a second copy is placed on the card. You want a card copy while keeping the phone copy.

Steps in My Files

  1. Insert the microSD card. The SD card location appears in My Files only while a card is inserted.
  2. Open My Files, often found in the Samsung folder. Tap Images to see your photos, or browse to Internal storage > DCIM > Camera.
  3. Touch and hold a photo to select it, then tap other photos to add them to the selection.
  4. Choose Move to transfer the selected photos, or Copy to keep them in internal storage as well.
  5. Return to My Files Home and tap SD card. Open the destination folder, or create a new one, then tap Move here or Copy here.
  6. Open the destination folder on the card and confirm the photos open before you delete any other copies.

Gallery album route on some models

Samsung’s UK support page documents a different workflow that places photos into a Gallery album stored on the card. Samsung’s current US support page takes a narrower position: file moves and copies are done in My Files only, and you cannot move or copy files to other apps such as Gallery. Treat the Gallery steps as an option that appears on your screen, not as a universal method. If your version does not show these options, use My Files.

  1. Open Gallery and tap Albums.
  2. Tap Options, then tap Create album.
  3. Choose SD card as the location, and enter a name for the album.
  4. Open Pictures, select the photos you want, then tap More options > Move to album.

The selected photos move into the new album. Albums saved on the SD card display a small SD-card icon, which helps you tell them apart from internal albums.

Save new photos to the SD card automatically

On models and software builds that support it, Samsung UK lists a setting that makes the camera save new photos to the card: open Camera, tap Settings, then choose Storage location and select SD card. The setting is absent on models without a card slot and may be arranged differently on other software versions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This setting affects photos taken after you change it. Photos you already took stay where they are, so use the My Files steps above for those. The camera saves to a DCIM > Camera folder, which Samsung identifies as My Files > Internal storage or SD card > DCIM > Camera. Use that path to confirm where new photos are landing.

Choose a microSD card for your Galaxy

Pick a compatible microSD card for your Galaxy by checking both the device specification and the card’s capacity band. Samsung’s US support page describes three capacity groups:

Card type Capacity (Samsung US Support) Samsung’s suggested use
microSD Up to 2 GB Sufficient for less demanding still photography.
microSDHC Over 2 GB through 32 GB Sufficient for less demanding still photography.
microSDXC Over 32 GB through 2 TB Recommended for high-resolution video recording because of capacity and read/write speed.

These are capacity bands stated on Samsung’s US microSD support page, accessed in 2026. They describe card categories, not performance tests, and they do not mean every Galaxy model accepts every type or size. If you shoot high-resolution video, a microSDXC card is the category Samsung recommends.

If the SD card does not appear

Start with the model check in Step 1, then work through these checks in order:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Power down if your device allows it, remove the card, inspect it for dirt or damage, gently clean the contacts, and reinstall it.
  2. Test the same card in another mobile device. If the card works there, the problem is more likely the phone’s slot or software. If it fails there too, the card is the more likely cause.
  3. Consider formatting only as a last step. Formatting permanently erases the card’s data, so copy any photos you want to keep to another location first.

If the card still isn’t recognized after these checks, contact Samsung Support for your model.

When an SD card is the wrong tool

A card solves one problem: extra removable storage on a device that has a slot. Several other routes handle adjacent needs, and they do not all do the same thing. The alternatives Samsung describes include:

  • Computer over USB: connect the unlocked phone to a PC and select Transferring files/MTP to copy photos to the computer. This moves photos to a PC, not onto a card.
  • USB OTG flash drive: a USB OTG drive gives a model without a card slot an external storage option.
  • Cloud storage: uploads keep photos accessible across devices, but they are not stored on the phone or in a card slot.
  • Smart Switch: transfers content to another phone or tablet during a device change. It is a migration tool, not a way to add removable storage.

Two transfer limits apply in Samsung’s US guidance: media in Secure Folder cannot be moved this way, and encrypted music and other purchases have transfer restrictions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I move photos from the SD card back to the phone?

Yes. Use the same My Files steps in reverse: open My Files, go to SD card and then the folder holding the photos, select them, and choose Move or Copy. Then tap Internal storage as the destination and tap Move here or Copy here.
