You can monitor known public YouTube channels without repeatedly calling the YouTube Data API: use the channel’s Atom feed, or subscribe to YouTube’s push-notification service to receive upload and metadata-change events at your own callback endpoint. For personal viewing, YouTube’s Subscriptions feed and notification bell are simpler. The right option depends on whether you need an automated integration, a personal alert, or richer API data.
Choose the right way to monitor a channel
| Option | Best for | Setup and delivery | Coverage and limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| YouTube Subscriptions feed and bell | Following channels as a viewer | Subscribe in YouTube; choose a notification setting or check the Subscriptions feed. | Low setup effort, but notification delivery varies by device and not every upload triggers a notification, according to YouTube Help. |
| Channel feed with push notifications | Automated monitoring of known channels | Subscribe to the feed through a hub and operate an internet-accessible callback endpoint. | Events cover uploads and video title or description updates. Google documents the integration, but does not specify a delivery SLA or missed-event recovery guarantee: YouTube push notifications guide. |
| YouTube Data API | Searching or querying video and channel resources | Make API requests using a Google Cloud project and plan around quota. | Offers broader queryable data and search, but uses quota. It is not necessary just to receive upload events for known channels. See the YouTube Data API overview. |
| Analytics or Reporting API | Performance reports for channels or content owners you are authorized to access | Analytics reports require OAuth authorization; the Reporting API is designed for scheduled bulk reports. | These APIs are for authorized reporting, not anonymous monitoring of arbitrary public channels. See the Analytics API reference and Reporting API introduction. |
Get an upload feed for a YouTube channel
YouTube documents an Atom feed URL that uses a channel ID:
https://www.youtube.com/feeds/videos.xml?channel_id=CHANNEL_ID
Recommended Free Tools
Replace CHANNEL_ID with the channel’s actual ID. This is a feed URL, not a Data API request. The feed is a practical starting point for monitoring uploads from channels you already know. YouTube’s push-notification documentation describes using this feed as the topic for upload and video title or description update events.

Set up automatic notifications with a webhook
For unattended monitoring, YouTube documents a push flow built around a hub subscription and a callback server. Unlike periodically polling an API, this lets the service send notifications to your endpoint when relevant feed events occur. Google describes push as “much more efficient than polling-based solutions.”
- Run a callback endpoint. Make an internet-accessible server endpoint that can receive and process Atom notifications. This requires hosting and integration work; it is not a switch in YouTube’s viewer settings.
- Use the channel feed as the topic. Set the topic to
https://www.youtube.com/feeds/videos.xml?channel_id=CHANNEL_ID, replacing the channel ID with the one you want to monitor. - Send a hub subscription request. Follow YouTube’s documented flow and send the request in
subscribemode to the Google hub, with the feed URL as the topic and your callback endpoint configured to receive the notifications. Use the exact request parameters and verification procedure in the official guide. - Process each event. Extract the video and channel identifiers from the notification and pass them to the next step in your workflow, such as storing an upload record or notifying a team.
- Monitor the integration. Track whether your endpoint is reachable and whether events are being processed. The documentation does not promise a delivery SLA or explain guaranteed recovery after a callback failure, so avoid treating a webhook as a guaranteed, complete event history.
The documented events include uploads and changes to video titles or descriptions. This is an upload-monitoring route, not a replacement for every Data API feature: it does not turn the feed into a general search interface or provide the API’s broader queryable resources.

Use YouTube itself for personal upload alerts
If you only want to know when creators you follow post, subscribing to their channels and using YouTube’s Subscriptions feed is simpler than running a server. You can set a channel’s bell to “All notifications” if you want more alerts, while checking the Subscriptions feed gives you a place to look for recent uploads.
Do not treat the bell as a complete upload log. YouTube Help states that “not every new upload will result in a notification,” and notification settings can vary by device. For a personal viewer, this is usually a convenience feature rather than a dependable monitoring integration.

What the YouTube Data API quota means
Google’s current YouTube Data API overview documents a default allocation of 10,000 quota units per day combined for most endpoints. It also lists separate default daily allocations of 100 calls for search.list and 100 calls for videos.insert. These are current documentation values checked on October 7, 2026; Google says defaults can change, so check your project’s live Quotas page before designing around them.
- Each request, including an invalid request, incurs at least one quota point.
- Read operations commonly cost one unit; write operations commonly cost 50, with method-specific exceptions.
- Additional quota can be requested, but a feed-based upload workflow can avoid repeated Data API polling for known channels.
Quota is not a reason to avoid every Data API call. Use the API when you need its capabilities, such as search or resource data, and use a feed or push flow when the requirement is simply to monitor known channels for uploads. The API overview is the source for the documented defaults and cost model.
When the Analytics and Reporting APIs fit
The YouTube Analytics API retrieves reports for a channel or content owner and requires OAuth authorization. The Reporting API is built around scheduled bulk reports. They serve creators and content owners who are authorized to access performance data; they do not provide a general way to watch arbitrary public channels for new uploads. Consult the Analytics API reference and Reporting API introduction for their respective scopes.
