Use a validated automatic upper-arm monitor with a cuff that fits, take two readings one minute apart under consistent conditions, and record both. Follow your clinician’s advice on how often to measure; if a reading is above 180/120 mm Hg, repeat it after at least one minute and act on the result as described below.
Choose a monitor that fits and is validated
The American Heart Association recommends an automatic cuff-style monitor for the upper arm. Wrist and finger devices are less reliable for routine home monitoring. Choose a model whose cuff range includes your measured upper-arm circumference, and check that the device has been validated. If the monitor will be used during pregnancy or for a child, confirm that validation applies to that population. See the AHA’s home monitoring guidance for device-selection advice.
- Fit: Measure your upper arm and compare it with the cuff’s stated size range; a cuff that is too small or too large can undermine the usefulness of a reading.
- Validation: Confirm that the specific model is validated, not merely that it is an upper-arm monitor.
- Usability: Check that the display is easy to read and the controls are manageable. Memory or sharing features can make it easier to review results with a health professional.
There is no need to choose a particular brand based on a general accuracy claim. Focus on validation, cuff fit, and whether you can use the device consistently.
Prepare for each measurement
Conditions immediately before a reading can affect the result. For at least 30 minutes beforehand, avoid smoking, caffeine, exercise, and alcohol. Empty your bladder, then sit quietly for at least five minutes. During the measurement, do not talk or use your phone. The CDC’s measurement instructions also describe the importance of a supported, steady position.

Take two readings with the same posture
- Sit with your back supported and both feet flat on the floor. Keep your legs uncrossed.
- Place the cuff on bare skin, following the monitor’s instructions for positioning it.
- Rest your arm on a flat surface so the cuff is at heart level.
- Start the monitor and remain still and quiet while it measures.
- Wait one minute, take a second reading, and write down both results.
Measure at a consistent time when possible, and use the frequency recommended by your health professional. The AHA puts it plainly: “One blood pressure measurement is like a snapshot.” A pair of readings and a record over time can give your clinician more context than a single result.
Keep a log that is easy to review
Record the date, time, systolic pressure (the top number), diastolic pressure (the bottom number), and any pulse shown by the monitor. Keep both readings in each pair; do not record only the lower or more reassuring one. Add symptoms or unusual circumstances when your clinician asks you to. The AHA provides a printable blood pressure log that also has space for a blood-pressure goal.

Choose a record-keeping method you will use
- Paper log: Write down each pair as soon as you take it. This works without a device connection, but you need to bring the record to appointments.
- AHA printable log: Use the free form if you want a ready-made place for readings and your clinician-set goal.
- Monitor memory: Stored readings can be reviewed with a health professional. Check how your device displays or shares them, and bring the monitor if that is easiest.
In an AHA News article published May 22, 2020, Paul Muntner, professor of epidemiology and associate dean for research at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, said: “When blood pressure monitors cannot transmit readings to a patient’s doctor, the next best thing is to have a device that stores the blood pressure readings.” The full report is available from AHA News.
How often should you measure?
Ask your health professional how often to monitor; the right schedule depends on your care plan. For its pre-appointment tracker, the AHA suggests taking two readings in the morning and two at bedtime each day for a minimum of three days, and preferably seven days. That is a short-term schedule for preparing a log before an appointment, not a universal long-term routine. Follow the instructions your clinician gives you.

What to do if a reading is above 180/120 mm Hg
If a reading is suddenly above 180/120 mm Hg, wait at least one minute and take another reading.
- If the repeat reading remains above 180/120 mm Hg: Contact a health professional immediately.
- If a reading above that threshold occurs with chest pain, shortness of breath, back pain, numbness, weakness, vision change, or difficulty speaking: Call 911.

Bring your readings to your appointment
Bring your log or monitor to appointments so a health professional can review the results and, if useful, how your device works. Home monitoring supports care; it does not replace medical visits or establish a diagnosis by itself. Do not stop or change prescribed medication based only on home readings without consulting your health professional. The American Medical Association’s guidance on home BP measurement also discusses reviewing home measurements with clinicians.
