To find what is slowing a WordPress page, use the free Query Monitor plugin to inspect that page’s database queries, timeline, HTTP API calls, PHP notices, and scripts or styles. Start with the timeline, then check Queries → Queries by Component to see which plugin, theme, or core component is associated with the most query time. Query Monitor reports one request at a time; it does not provide historical performance data.
What Query Monitor can tell you
Query Monitor is a developer tools panel for WordPress and WooCommerce. It can show database queries—including slow, duplicate, or erroneous queries—and group or filter them by type, component, and calling function. That helps narrow down which code is involved, but an association with a plugin is a lead to investigate, not proof that the plugin alone caused a slow page.
Its toolbar summary includes page generation time, peak memory use, total SQL query time, and query count for the current page load. The figures are request-specific: as Query Monitor developer John Blackbourn puts it, “All of the information shown by Query Monitor is for the current page load.” Read the official usage guide.
Install Query Monitor and reproduce the slowdown
- Install and activate Query Monitor from the WordPress.org plugin directory. At the time of the directory listing dated 20 June 2026, version 4.0.7 listed WordPress 6.2 or later and PHP 7.4 or later as requirements, and confirmed WordPress 7.0 support. Compatibility changes, so check the live listing for the version and requirements that apply to your site.
- While logged in as an Administrator, open the page or repeat the action that feels slow. The usage guide says Query Monitor adds a menu to the admin toolbar. On multisite, the listing says diagnostic output is normally shown to Super Admins; on a single-site installation it is normally shown to Administrators. The listing also describes an authentication-cookie option for viewing output while logged out or as a non-Administrator.
- Open the Query Monitor toolbar menu and note the page generation time, peak memory, total SQL query time, and total query count. Record which page and action produced the figures so you can compare like with like after an adjustment.
Read the timeline, then identify query-heavy components
Start with the timeline
Open the timeline first. It provides a view of where time is spent during that individual page load, helping you decide whether database activity is a likely bottleneck or whether you should inspect other work performed during the request.
#1 Best Overall
Use Queries by Component
Go to Queries → Queries by Component. Query Monitor aggregates queries by plugin, theme, and other components, and sorts components by their total query time. Inspect the query details and calling code to understand what is happening before disabling, replacing, or editing a component.
Look at total time and the overall pattern, not just the slowest single statement. A query may be worth investigating because it is slow, repeated, or erroneous; the component’s aggregate time and the timeline provide context for how much it contributes to the page load.
Check bottlenecks beyond SQL
A page can feel slow even when its database queries are not the main issue. Query Monitor exposes other clues to investigate:
- HTTP API Calls: Check whether a plugin or theme makes server-side requests that add time independently of SQL.
- PHP errors and warnings: Review notices and warnings. The usage guide says warnings can indicate code is not operating as expected, and time spent logging them can add overhead.
- Scripts and styles: If server-side page generation looks acceptable but the visitor experience remains slow, inspect front-end scripts and styles. These can affect load experience separately from PHP and database work.
Verify a change with a repeatable comparison
- Make one targeted change based on the query details or other evidence. Avoid removing a plugin solely because it appears in the component list.
- Re-run the same page or action under comparable conditions while logged in, and review the same Query Monitor panels.
- Compare the request’s page generation time, memory, SQL time, query count, timeline, and relevant HTTP calls or warnings. Repeat if results vary; Query Monitor itself does not retain a history or generate a before-and-after report.
Understand Query Monitor’s limits and caching context
Query Monitor is a diagnostic view of the current request, not a historical monitoring service. A single request can help identify where to investigate, but it cannot establish how a page performs across visitors, traffic levels, or time.
Rank #3
The plugin collects diagnostic data during requests. A WordPress.org support report describes memory exhaustion on one site with many queries; that is an individual report, not evidence of a general rate or a claim that Query Monitor materially slows every site. On a constrained environment or unusually busy development request, keep an eye on memory use as you diagnose.
WordPress’s default object cache does not persist between page loads. A persistent object cache can retain cached results across loads; the official guide names Redis and Memcached as possible drivers and recommends asking your hosting provider about setup. Whether to use one depends on the site and hosting environment—it is not a requirement for every WordPress installation.
Rank #4
Current listing context
The WordPress.org listing recorded more than 200,000 active installations in 2026. That is a directory snapshot, not a performance measurement or endorsement. The listing’s changelog notes that version 4 introduced a timeline view and client-side Preact rendering, and that version 4.0.7 added database queries to the timeline even when db.php is not in place. These details describe the listed release; check the current listing for later changes.
