Monitor an endpoint from outside your infrastructure, check for the response your site is supposed to return, and alert only after failures meet a defined threshold. When an alert fires, compare results from multiple locations and use the error type to investigate DNS, connectivity, TLS, HTTP behavior, and the application itself. For critical tasks such as login or checkout, add a scripted test: a basic uptime check can succeed even when the user journey is broken.
What website availability should your monitor measure?
Choose a check that represents the outcome you care about. A public landing page may need a simple HTTP or HTTPS check. A protected area or transaction requires a test that exercises the relevant application behavior. Google Cloud Monitoring supports public HTTP, HTTPS, and TCP uptime checks, as well as scripted synthetic monitoring; Pingdom describes transaction tests for actions such as registration, login, search, and checkout.
It is useful to separate three kinds of evidence:
- Uptime checks periodically request a URL or service endpoint and report whether it responds according to configured criteria.
- Synthetic tests run a scripted journey under controlled conditions, such as signing in or submitting a checkout form.
- Real-user monitoring records aspects of actual visitor experience. It can reveal problems that a repeatable probe may not reproduce.
These approaches answer different questions; a green result from one does not prove the others are healthy. Google Cloud’s basic uptime checks do not load page assets or execute JavaScript, so they cannot establish that a browser can render the full page or complete an interactive workflow. See Google Cloud’s public uptime-check documentation and its synthetic monitoring overview.
Set up a useful availability check
1. Pick a representative endpoint
Use a stable URL or service target that exercises the part of the site you intend to monitor. A lightweight health endpoint can be appropriate for basic service availability, while a public page may better reflect what an unauthenticated visitor can reach. For a critical workflow, configure a separate synthetic test rather than assuming that a successful homepage request covers it.

2. Define what counts as success
Set an expected HTTP status and, when the response contains a stable marker, consider checking for that content too. Google Cloud documents 2xx responses as the default accepted status for its HTTP checks; the expected status can be configured, redirects are followed, and the final response is evaluated. Avoid a test that accepts a generic error page as success or depends on content that frequently changes during normal deployments.
For HTTPS checks, account for certificate validation and expiry. Google Cloud documents certificate validation behavior and an expiry metric that can be used for alerting. The precise options and failure conditions depend on the service and its configuration.

3. Use more than one monitoring location
Choose probe locations that reflect important visitor regions. If a site fails from several locations, that is stronger evidence of a broad reachability problem than a failure reported by one checker alone. A single location can encounter temporary network congestion or a regional path problem. Google Cloud notes that its default alert configuration does not notify on a failure from only one checker; Pingdom describes checks from multiple worldwide locations and configurable alert timing.

4. Make the alert actionable
Send alerts to a channel that someone responsible for the site actually monitors. Include the target, timestamp, probe location, protocol, error or status, and any recent deployment or configuration change that may help an responder narrow the cause. Configure confirmation checks, delays, or thresholds to balance prompt detection with the risk of paging on an isolated transient failure. There is no universally correct threshold: it depends on the service’s impact and response expectations, and available controls vary by provider and plan.

5. Test the user journeys that matter
Run scripted synthetic tests separately for workflows such as sign-in, search, or checkout. Keep test accounts and test data safe, and ensure the test itself does not create real orders, send unwanted messages, or alter customer records. Use real-user monitoring, if available, to understand what visitors actually experienced alongside the controlled synthetic results.
Diagnose an outage from the observed failure
Start with the exact result, compare locations, and investigate the relevant layer before changing configuration. An error is a clue, not proof of a root cause. Google Cloud’s uptime-check troubleshooting guide lists common failure messages and possible causes.
Rank #4
| What the monitor reports | What to check first | What the result does—and does not—show |
|---|---|---|
| Connection refused | Confirm that the web service is running and listening on the expected host and port. Check firewalls and network policies that might block the probe. | A missing or nonresponsive server and firewall configuration are possible causes; verify against the host and network configuration. |
| Hostname or service not found | Check the hostname spelling, DNS records, resolver behavior, and whether the monitor targets the intended host. | An incorrect hostname is one possible cause; the message alone does not identify which DNS or configuration component is responsible. |
| HTTP 403 | Review access controls, allowlists, authentication, and virtual-host configuration. Confirm that the monitor is permitted to reach the endpoint. | A server’s default configuration may return 403 to a check. Do not treat this automatically as a general outage if the endpoint is intentionally restricted. |
| HTTP 404 | Confirm the path configured in the monitor and check routing, redirects, and recent deployment changes. | An incorrect path is a possible cause; verify the route rather than changing it based on the status alone. |
| Timeout or no response | Check service health, port, accessibility, firewall rules, the monitor’s timeout setting, and network congestion. Compare other probe locations. | Several causes can produce a timeout. A failure from one checker may be a transient or regional network issue rather than a site-wide outage. |
| TLS or certificate failure | Check expiry, trust, hostname matching, and the monitor’s TLS-validation settings. | Certificate conditions and validation behavior vary by monitor; inspect its specific error details and configuration. |
| HTTP check passes, but the page or workflow is broken | Inspect browser-loaded assets, client-side errors, backend dependencies, and the steps in a scripted transaction. | A basic uptime check does not load assets or execute JavaScript, so a passing response does not prove that the page renders or an application action succeeds. |
Use network signals as supporting evidence
If the monitoring system supports ICMP ping, the result can add evidence about network reachability. Google Cloud allows up to three pings on a public uptime check and describes their use in distinguishing connectivity problems from application timeouts. A successful ping does not establish that the web application works, and a failed ping alone does not prove the application is unavailable.

Check hosting, DNS, CDN, and other dependencies
Compare your independent checks with the status information for relevant providers, including hosting, DNS, CDN, and monitoring services. A provider incident can help explain a failure, but a status page is only one input: compare it with your endpoint results and application evidence.

Cloudflare provides a status page and a machine-readable API. For automated status checks, its documentation advises polling the API rather than scraping status-page HTML, and recommends an identifiable User-Agent. Choose a monitoring service by capability
Google Cloud Monitoring, Pingdom, and Cloudflare Health Checks are examples documented by their providers, not a ranked recommendation or a claim of hands-on testing. Compare the capabilities relevant to your site:
- Check type: HTTP, HTTPS, or TCP availability versus scripted tests for login, form submission, search, or checkout.
- Locations: available probe regions and whether they reflect where your important visitors are located.
- Validation: configurable status codes, response-content matching, redirect handling, TLS validation, and certificate-expiry visibility.
- Alert control: notification channels, rechecks, delays, thresholds, and integrations.
- Diagnosis evidence: error categories, response details, latency history, network signals, and access to relevant logs.
- Visitor coverage: whether real-user monitoring is available in addition to synthetic probes.
Capabilities, plan limits, and pricing can change. Confirm current availability and entitlements with the provider before choosing a service.
