To monitor competitors’ prices, stock status, and product changes on Shopify, you use a third-party ecommerce price-monitoring service or a Shopify App Store app that watches the competing product pages on a schedule and alerts you when something moves. Shopify’s own low-stock tools do not do this job. They track your inventory, not other stores.

This guide explains what these tools can and cannot show, how to set one up without drowning in alerts, and what to check before you act on a change. Plan names, prices, and limits quoted here come from listings retrieved on October 7, 2026, and they will change.

What Shopify provides and what it does not

Shopify’s own inventory features are built for the merchant’s catalog. Shopify’s Help Center describes Stocky as a way to monitor inventory across your store and identify low-stock products. For reactive notifications to several staff members, the same guidance points to third-party inventory alert apps or Shopify Flow. None of that covers a competitor’s listings.

Competitor monitoring is therefore a separate category. Shopify’s January 25, 2024 guide, “Ecommerce Price Monitoring Tools: 10 Top Options,” states: “You can find price monitoring in the Shopify App Store.” The Shopify App Store has a competitor-tracking category that lists apps such as PriceSentry and ShopiSync. That category is a discovery page, not a ranking, so it tells you what exists rather than which tool is best for your store.

What “competitor stock” can and cannot mean

Monitoring tools can report whether a competitor’s product page shows as available, unavailable, or changed. Some describe tracking “stock movements” or competitor stock availability. Treat that as an observed storefront status. None of the sources reviewed for this guide show that a tool can read a competitor’s exact warehouse count, so do not build a plan on that assumption.

In practice, a stock alert tells you that a competing listing went out of stock or came back. It does not tell you how many units remain or how long the shortage will last.

Setting up competitor monitoring step by step

  1. Pick a short list of genuinely comparable competitors. Start with five to ten products that customers actually cross-shop. Monitoring every product on a rival store creates noise and uses up plan limits.
  2. Collect the exact competitor product URLs. Tools that work from URLs need the specific product page. Note the variant, pack size, and currency for each item before you paste it in.
  3. Install the app or sign up for the service. Shopify App Store apps are installed from their listing. Standalone services are set up through their own dashboard. Confirm that the plan covers the number of URLs you need before you add them.
  4. Map each competitor product to your own product and variant. This is the step that determines whether a comparison is valid. Check that the match uses the same size, quantity, and variant, not just a similar title.
  5. Check the sale-price and currency settings. Make sure the tool records the price a customer actually pays, not a struck-through “compare at” price, and that the currency matches your store’s currency.
  6. Set the scan frequency to match how fast your category moves. Commodity items may justify daily checks. Slow-moving catalogs often do not.
  7. Configure alerts for changes that would make you act. Start with price changes beyond a threshold you choose and stock changes on your best sellers. Avoid switching on every notification at once.
  8. Verify the first few alerts by hand. Open the competitor page and confirm the price, variant, and stock status the tool reported before you change anything of your own.

Automatic repricing needs guardrails

Repricing is a separate decision from tracking. Some tools, including PriceSpidey, can adjust your prices automatically based on competitor data. Automatic price changes can erode margin quickly if the rules are wrong, so do not enable them until you have set:

Common failure modes and how to handle them

  • Wrong variant matched. A 500 ml item may be compared with a 1 litre item. Check the variant on every new match, and recheck after the competitor changes its product page.
  • Stale data. A weekly scan may show a price that changed days ago. Match the cadence to the speed of your category, and do not treat an alert as a live quote.
  • Sale prices mistaken for regular prices. A temporary discount can trigger a price-matching reaction that lasts longer than the promotion. Confirm whether the change is temporary before you respond.
  • Alert fatigue. Too many notifications train you to ignore them. Narrow alerts to your highest-volume products.
  • Currency or tax mismatch. A price in another currency, or one shown before tax, can look cheaper than it is. Confirm the currency and tax display on the competitor’s page.

Before you buy: a short checklist

  • Confirm the tool’s current Shopify App Store status or its integration with your store.
  • Check the URL or product allowance on the plan you need, and the check frequency on that plan.
  • Ask whether the tool records price history and what the activity log retains.
  • Find out whether repricing is optional, and whether you can set cost, margin, and floor and ceiling rules.
  • Read the billing currency, trial terms, and cancellation terms on the vendor page.
