For self-hosted Atlassian Data Center, monitor suspicious file access by collecting both HTTP access logs and application audit logs from every cluster node, forwarding them to a central logging platform, and correlating unusual requests with the account, source IP, response, permissions, and surrounding activity. A request pattern is a lead to investigate—not proof that a file was stolen.
Which Atlassian logs show who accessed a file?
HTTP access logs and application audit logs answer different questions. Access logs record web and API requests; audit logs record product events such as administrative, permission, and user actions. Use both when investigating an incident: one can show a request, while the other may supply context about changes or actions around it.
For Jira, Tomcat access logs can include the source IP, authenticated user when available, HTTP method, endpoint, and response code. Atlassian says its access logs register information about HTTP requests, including their origin IP, user if not anonymous, method, endpoint, and response code. Atlassian’s Jira access-log guide gives examples of parsing requests such as browsing, searching, editing, and attachment access.

Missing audit events may mean relevant coverage was disabled or changed; a quiet audit stream does not establish that no activity occurred. Review audit settings for the administrative, permission, and user actions important to your environment. Atlassian’s Data Center security checklist recommends using access logs to identify unusual activity.

How do I monitor Jira attachment downloads?
Atlassian documents a Jira attachment request pattern for an issue-view request: a GET to secure/attachment/<numeric-id>. The KB example includes an authenticated username, timestamp, endpoint, response code, and other request metadata. Its regular-expression example is:
GET .*secure/attachment/d+
Treat a match as an attachment request to review, not as proof of exfiltration. The same endpoint family can represent a download or preview, and a log line alone does not show intent, whether access was authorized, or what happened to the file after the response. Check the identity and permissions, source network, adjacent requests, response status, and relevant audit and proxy records.
Uploads are a different behavior. Atlassian’s Jira examples also include a POST pattern for AttachTemporaryFile. Separate upload and download/preview detections so alerts reflect the activity you are trying to investigate. See the Jira access-log examples for the documented patterns.

How can I detect suspicious attachment access?
Build detections around deviations from expected use rather than treating one endpoint or one response as a verdict. For Jira, useful review candidates include:
- Unusual bursts or timing of attachment requests, especially when inconsistent with the account’s normal work.
- Requests from unexpected source IPs or networks, or activity by accounts that do not normally access the relevant work.
- Repeated denied requests, or an unusual mix or volume of response statuses.
- Access patterns inconsistent with a user’s role, combined with relevant permission or configuration changes in audit events.
These are practical detection ideas based on the request fields available in access logs and Atlassian’s guidance to look for unusual activity; they are not a claim that Atlassian ships built-in detections for each pattern. Tune thresholds to your own users, integrations, and expected traffic to avoid confusing routine automation or legitimate work with suspicious behavior.
Do not apply Jira’s secure/attachment/<id> pattern to Confluence or Bitbucket. Equivalent current attachment-download routes are not established here. For those products, start with their access logs, identify product-specific request routes for the installed version, and validate any proposed pattern with an authorized test request.

How do I monitor Jira and Confluence Data Center logs in a SIEM?
- Inventory the deployment. Record each product and version, every cluster node, each local home path, the proxy or load-balancer path, and current audit coverage. Check version requirements before relying on built-in security alerts.
- Enable relevant audit coverage. Review which administrative, permission, and user actions are recorded. Account for coverage changes when interpreting gaps.
- Collect request logs. For Jira, collect Tomcat access logs from each node. Confirm the format includes the fields your detections need, such as time, source IP, user where available, method, endpoint, and response code.
- Collect audit files from every node. Jira and Confluence Data Center write audit files under the local home directory’s
log/auditdirectory; each cluster node has its own file. Bitbucket documentation likewise describes per-node audit files. A collector pointed at only one node leaves gaps. - Forward and preserve centrally. Atlassian product documentation names ELK, Splunk, Sumo Logic, and Amazon CloudWatch as integration examples. Configure collection on every node, retain node identity and timestamps, and preserve copies outside local rotation so investigations are not limited to the files still present on the application hosts.
- Create and tune detections. Start with the Jira request patterns and behavior indicators above, then add context from audit and network records. Document what each alert means and what evidence an investigator should check before drawing a conclusion.
- Validate the pipeline safely. With a controlled account, make an authorized request for a known attachment. Confirm the expected node logs it, the collector forwards it, and a central search returns the event. This checks the end-to-end path without relying on assumptions about configuration.
Atlassian’s Data Center security checklist recommends access-log use and longer-term preservation for investigations. Product guides explain integrations and local log behavior for Jira, Confluence, and Bitbucket Data Center.

Audit logs can help explain changes to configuration, permissions, or accounts that surround a suspicious request. Keep in mind that local files rotate: Jira audit files have configured count and size limits, and Atlassian says older files may be removed when limits are reached. Confluence audit files are JSON, stored per node, and rotate by time or size with configurable retention. Check your actual settings rather than assuming a documented default applies to your installation.
Atlassian’s built-in Security monitoring and alerts are documented for Jira 10.0 and later, Confluence 9.1 and later, and Bitbucket 9.1 and later. The feature processes audit-log events and can report potentially suspicious activity, including critical configuration changes and grants of system administrator access. Email notifications require a valid SMTP server; access to the tracking hub and notifications is permission-controlled. Atlassian also documents limitations, including a short refresh delay for certain administrator permission changes. Because the feature depends on audit events, use it as additional context, not as a complete file-access monitoring system. See Atlassian’s Security monitoring and alerts documentation for supported versions and behavior.

- Runs UniFi Network for full-stack network management
- Manages 30+ UniFi Network devices and 300+ clients
- 1 Gbps routing with IDS/IPS
- Multi-WAN load balancing
- 0.96" LCM status display
Atlassian’s Jira and Confluence integration documentation describes a 100 MB audit-file rotation threshold and a default limit of 100 files. These are documented configuration and retention details, not security guarantees; verify the current configuration before relying on either value. Central forwarding helps preserve records beyond the application node’s local rotation window.
What a log entry can—and cannot—establish
An access-log entry establishes that the application recorded a request with particular metadata. It does not by itself establish the requester’s intent, prove that access was unauthorized, or show what happened to the file after the response. To assess an event, correlate it with the account’s role and permissions, source network, neighboring requests, response status, audit events, and proxy or application records. Atlassian’s Bitbucket audit documentation describes audit logs as a way to identify authorized and unauthorized changes or suspicious activity over time, which is a useful reason to preserve context rather than judge an isolated line.
