To monitor keyword visibility reliably, define the query, target URL, country, language, device, search engine and reporting period first. Use Google Search Console for your site’s actual impressions, clicks and average position; automate its Search Analytics API for repeatable reporting, and add Bing Webmaster Tools if Bing matters. Use localized rank checks when you need a snapshot of what appears in a particular search context, competitor comparisons or alerts. These methods measure different things: an average position in your site’s observed search data is not a universal, live rank.

Decide what “rank” you need to monitor

Before collecting data, decide what question the monitoring is meant to answer. “Where does my site rank?” can mean whether your pages appeared in real searches, how often they earned clicks, or which result appeared for a carefully specified search at a particular place and time. Those are related, but not interchangeable, measurements.

  • Visibility and performance: clicks, impressions, click-through rate (CTR) and average position for your site. Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools provide first-party performance data.
  • A localized SERP snapshot: an observed results page for a specific query and search context, useful for a targeted spot check or competitor comparison. It is a point-in-time observation, not a substitute for performance trends.
  • Automated monitoring: a recurring dataset or alert process. This can use first-party APIs for your site’s performance data or a rank-tracking service for scheduled localized checks.

For each keyword, record the intended target page, engine, country or location, language, device and collection time. Keep these conditions consistent when comparing observations. A change in location, device or time can change the results being compared.

Use Google Search Console for Google performance

Google’s Performance report shows clicks, impressions, CTR and average position for your site in Google Search results. You can group and filter data by queries, pages, countries, devices, search appearance and dates. This makes it a good starting point for finding which queries produce visibility and whether that visibility is changing.

Open Search Console, choose the property for your site, then open Performance and select Search results. Choose a date range, enable the metrics you want to inspect, and use the table tabs and filters to examine queries, pages, countries or devices. To follow a specific keyword, filter the query dimension and, when relevant, pair it with a page filter so you can distinguish the intended landing page from another page on your site.

What average position does—and does not—tell you

Average position summarizes the position of your site’s top result in the impressions represented by the report. It is aggregated across the selected data; it does not promise that every person searching the phrase will see your site at that numbered position. The result type and search context matter, and the average can move when the mix of impressions changes. Google recommends monitoring changes in position over time, including sudden changes, rather than treating one absolute position as the whole story.

Search Console answers a first-party question: how your property performed when it appeared in Google Search. It is not a universal live rank tracker and does not show a guaranteed current result for every keyword, location and user. Google’s Performance report documentation explains the report and its dimensions; its position help page describes how position is measured.

Automate Google monitoring with the Search Analytics API

For recurring reports, use the Search Console Search Analytics API rather than manually copying report tables. Google documents it as a programmatic way to retrieve the same Search Analytics data. Request dimensions such as date, query, page, country and device, and retain the returned clicks, impressions, CTR and position values alongside the dimensions. That gives you a consistent dataset to compare periods or feed into a dashboard.

  1. Prepare access. Verify the site as a Search Console property and configure API access for the account or service that will collect its data.
  2. Set the scope. Choose the property, date range, search type and filters. Specify the dimensions required for the questions you plan to answer; combining many dimensions creates more granular rows.
  3. Schedule extraction. Run the request on a regular cadence that fits your reporting needs, and save the request scope and collection date with the response.
  4. Compare like with like. Compare equivalent dates, dimensions and filters. Review trends in impressions, clicks and average position together rather than interpreting position in isolation.

The API returns Search Analytics data, not a guaranteed live result page or a universal rank for every query. Consult Google’s Search Analytics API reference for request parameters, dimensions and response details. The exact dimensions available in a report depend on the API and request; do not assume that an API export is a complete record of every search.

Add Bing when it matters to your audience

If Bing contributes meaningful traffic or you need to monitor it alongside Google, use Bing Webmaster Tools for Bing-specific performance and diagnostics. Microsoft documents performance reporting, keyword research, Site Scan and API access in its Webmaster API documentation and Webmaster guidance.

For a programmatic workflow, use Microsoft’s current REST APIs. Microsoft states that its legacy SOAP and POX APIs will be retired on August 31, 2026, and advises users to migrate to REST APIs to avoid service disruption. Check the current API documentation before building or updating an integration.

Bing’s URL Inspection tool can help investigate index, SEO and markup details for a submitted URL. Use it when a performance drop might have an indexing or page-diagnostic cause; it complements performance monitoring rather than replacing it.

When to use a localized rank check

Use a manual or commercial rank check when you need a specific SERP observation, competitor comparison, scheduled localized checks or alerting that first-party performance reports do not provide. Treat each observation as context-dependent. Record the keyword, target country or location, language, device, search engine and timestamp, and keep them fixed for comparisons.

Choose a method based on the output you actually need:

Need Best-fit method What it measures
Your site’s Google search performance Search Console report or Search Analytics API Clicks, impressions, CTR and aggregated average position for your property
Your site’s Bing performance and diagnostics Bing Webmaster Tools and its APIs Bing performance data plus tools such as keyword research, Site Scan and URL Inspection
A result-page observation for a defined context Manual or commercial localized rank check A SERP snapshot under the tool’s specified location, device and other settings
Scheduled checks, competitor tracking or alerts Rank-tracking service, after checking its coverage and data practices Recurring observations and workflow features offered by that service

Before adopting a commercial service, verify which engines, locations, devices and languages it supports, how often it checks, how it handles competitors and alerts, what the plan costs, and how it retains your data. No single accuracy or market-wide benchmark is established by the cited first-party documentation, so avoid treating a vendor’s number as directly comparable to Search Console’s average position.

Investigate a sudden drop before changing the page

A decline in a report or rank check is a signal to diagnose, not proof that a page has been penalized or that its content needs rewriting. First confirm that the comparison uses the same dates, filters, query, page, engine, location and device. Then look at impressions, clicks and CTR alongside position: fewer impressions and fewer clicks can tell a different story from stable impressions with a lower CTR.

  1. Check the affected query and page. In Search Console, compare the query and page dimensions to see whether visibility moved to a different page or declined across the site.
  2. Compare countries and devices. Use the report dimensions to see whether the change is limited to a segment rather than site-wide.
  3. Review the time window. Compare equivalent periods and look for a sustained trend instead of overreacting to one observation.
  4. Inspect indexing when appropriate. Use URL Inspection and relevant index diagnostics to check whether crawling or indexing could explain the change. For Bing, the URL Inspection tool reports index, SEO and markup information for a submitted URL.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server from Yorker Media. It can capture a SERP page for visual review, but a screenshot is not rank-tracking analytics: it does not replace Search Console or a rank service’s recurring keyword dataset. One GET request returns an image or PDF; see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for available options.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://www.google.com/search?q=example+keyword -o shot.webp

For this capture, replace example+keyword with an encoded search phrase. A screenshot shows the returned page in the capture context; it does not establish a location-specific rank unless that context is configured and controlled. ScreenshotNeo’s 63 options include device and viewport settings, custom headers and cookies, waits, full-page capture and PDF output. It accepts consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf for AI agents. One thousand screenshots per month are free with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Common monitoring problems and fixes

  • A query has no Search Console row: the report covers queries that generated visibility for the property, not every phrase you might test. Confirm the property and date range, then use a controlled SERP check if you need to observe a particular search.
  • Position differs from a manual search: Search Console reports an aggregate; a manual or tool-based check is a contextual snapshot. Align query, engine, location, language, device and time, then compare the appropriate kind of measurement.
  • A trend looks inconsistent: check that the date ranges and report filters match and inspect query, page, country and device separately. A changed mix of impressions can shift an average.
  • API output is too broad or hard to compare: define the date range, filters and dimensions deliberately, store those settings with each extraction and compare equivalent slices.
  • A page suddenly loses visibility: validate the measurement conditions, then investigate the affected page with the relevant engine’s index and URL diagnostics before assuming a ranking cause.
  • A Bing integration may stop working: if it uses Microsoft’s legacy SOAP or POX APIs, plan migration to REST APIs before the announced August 31, 2026 retirement date.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I monitor a keyword even if my site has never appeared for it?

A rank check can observe a specified SERP even when your site has no recorded visibility; Search Console only reports query data when your property generated visibility.

Should I use one tool for both Google and Bing?

Use each engine’s own webmaster data for its performance. A separate rank-tracking service may cover multiple engines, but verify its engine and location coverage before relying on it.
