Use two monitoring layers: a Proxmox-aware exporter for host, cluster, VM, container, and storage metrics, and a separate uptime checker for the services people need to reach. Prometheus can collect metrics from both. A local LLM can be added as a custom way to summarize selected telemetry, but the documented tools do not provide a verified, turnkey Proxmox-to-local-LLM integration.
What each monitoring layer tells you
Proxmox API metrics and service uptime checks answer different questions. The Prometheus PVE Exporter gathers information Proxmox exposes about managed infrastructure; an uptime checker tests whether chosen endpoints respond. Neither replaces the other.
| Layer | What it observes | Useful for |
|---|---|---|
| Prometheus PVE Exporter | Proxmox-reported node, guest, storage, cluster, and related status and metrics | Infrastructure dashboards and alerts about resources Proxmox manages |
| Uptime Kuma | Reachability and response behavior for configured endpoints and services | Checking a web app, DNS resolver, reverse proxy, or other service from a monitoring location |
| Optional local LLM | Only the monitoring data you deliberately provide through a custom integration | Potentially summarizing or explaining selected events; not a substitute for alerting or verified diagnosis |
The PVE Exporter project documents collectors and metrics for Proxmox resources, while Uptime Kuma documents HTTP(S), TCP, ping, DNS, and other monitor types. Their capabilities are described in the PVE Exporter README and Uptime Kuma README.
Collect Proxmox metrics with Prometheus
Deploy the PVE Exporter
Run the community Prometheus PVE Exporter on a Proxmox VE node or another system that can reach the Proxmox API. The project documents installation with pip or Docker and a Prometheus scrape configuration that requests the exporter’s /pve path with module and cluster or node parameters. Consult the project’s current README for the configuration format matching the version you deploy: prometheus-pve-exporter.

Exporter output can include node, guest, storage, cluster, and other collector data. The available metrics can support views of resource status, storage size, guest details, backup coverage, subscription state, and other Proxmox information. Select collectors for the questions you need to answer rather than assuming every collector is required.
Use a dedicated read-only identity
Create a dedicated Proxmox account or API token for metric collection and grant it the read-only PVEAuditor role. The exporter documentation says to grant the user access at / for its required read scope. Avoid using an administrator identity or credentials with write authority for monitoring.
Preserve TLS certificate verification where possible by trusting the appropriate Proxmox certificate. The exporter offers an option to disable verification for self-signed certificate setups, but doing so removes the certificate check; treat it as a security trade-off rather than the preferred fix.

Plan collection for cluster size
Collection choices affect API request volume and coverage. The exporter README warns that its config collector makes one API call per VM or container and recommends disabling that collector on large deployments; it does not define a numeric threshold for “large.” Cluster metrics can be collected from one node, but obtaining a complete set of node metrics requires scraping each node with the documented parameters.
Review scrape targets and collector choices as your deployment changes. A single-node scrape may be sufficient for cluster-level metrics but should not be mistaken for complete node-specific coverage across a cluster.
Check whether important services are actually reachable
Configure endpoint monitors
Install Uptime Kuma as a separate uptime-checking layer and add monitors for the endpoints whose availability matters to users. Its README lists HTTP(S), TCP, keyword and JSON checks, WebSocket, ping, DNS, push, Docker, and other monitor types, along with notifications and status pages. The README describes 20-second intervals as a feature; this is a project-documented capability, not a guarantee that every monitor or configuration runs at that interval. See the Uptime Kuma project documentation.

Choose the check type to match what you need to know. A successful ping does not establish that an application is serving correct content; an HTTP or keyword check can test a higher-level response. Likewise, a service monitor tests the endpoint from the monitor’s network position, not every client’s path to it.

Bring uptime metrics into Prometheus
Uptime Kuma documents a Prometheus integration at /metrics, including monitor status and response-time metrics, with labels such as monitor name and type and URL or host and port. Prometheus can scrape this endpoint so service availability appears alongside Proxmox metrics. Configure authentication and network access for the metrics endpoint according to the deployed Kuma settings; do not expose it indiscriminately. Integration details are documented at Uptime Kuma’s Prometheus integration guide.
Choose where telemetry is stored
A local Prometheus and Uptime Kuma deployment can keep monitoring data within systems you operate. Another option is OneUptime’s documented Proxmox agent: it uses a preconfigured OpenTelemetry Collector to scrape prometheus-pve-exporter, or can run the exporter in a bundled profile, then forwards telemetry to a OneUptime instance. Its guide allows ONEUPTIME_URL to point to a self-hosted destination, and requires an ingestion token. Review the guide and verify the agent’s current behavior and data flow before choosing it: OneUptime Proxmox agent documentation.

The OneUptime guide lists Docker Engine 20.10 or newer with the Compose v2 plugin, Proxmox API access on port 8006, a read-only PVEAuditor API token, and a telemetry ingestion token as setup requirements. Whether this fits an all-local design depends on the destination you configure and the trust boundary you want telemetry to remain within.
Add a local LLM only as a custom, bounded layer
The documented exporter, uptime checker, and OneUptime agent materials do not establish a supported local LLM runtime or an official connector that lets a local model query Proxmox or consume these metrics. Treat an LLM integration as a separate design and implementation project, not a built-in monitoring feature.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteA cautious architecture would make selected monitoring data available to a locally hosted model for summaries, while leaving detection, alert delivery, and operational actions to deterministic monitoring and automation systems. Limit the model’s context to what it needs and do not give it broad Proxmox credentials. Any connector, prompt, model behavior, and safeguards need independent validation; the documented sources do not establish reliable autonomous diagnosis or safe remediation.
A practical deployment sequence
- Set the scope: List the Proxmox nodes and resources you want to observe, plus the user-facing endpoints that need uptime checks.
- Create monitoring credentials: Set up a dedicated read-only Proxmox account or token with the documented
PVEAuditorrole and required access at/. - Deploy the exporter: Install the PVE Exporter where it can reach the Proxmox API, configure its module and target parameters, and retain certificate verification where possible.
- Configure Prometheus: Scrape the exporter’s
/pveendpoint using the exporter’s documented parameters. In a cluster, plan separately for one-node cluster metrics and per-node scrapes needed for full node coverage. - Add uptime monitors: Set up Uptime Kuma checks for important services, select checks that test the relevant behavior, and configure notifications and any status page you need.
- Scrape Kuma metrics: Enable or configure its Prometheus integration, protect access to
/metrics, and add it as a Prometheus target. - Review load and data flow: Decide whether to disable the config collector on a large deployment, and check that telemetry remains within your intended storage and trust boundary.
- Consider an LLM last: If you build a local summarization integration, provide limited monitoring context and test it without granting the model operational authority.
How to interpret monitoring gaps
- Proxmox metrics are present but an application is down: The exporter measures Proxmox-managed state, not whether every service inside a guest is serving users. Add a service-level check for the endpoint.
- Cluster metrics appear but some nodes are missing: Confirm that node-specific metrics are scraped from each node as required for complete node coverage.
- Scrapes become costly as guests grow: Review collector selection, especially the config collector’s documented per-VM/container API call behavior.
- Metrics are reachable from an unintended network: Restrict network exposure and configure authentication for the relevant endpoints, including Kuma’s Prometheus metrics endpoint.
These tools’ documentation describes capabilities and configuration, not comparative performance or a guarantee of availability. Validate version compatibility and current setup details against the projects’ documentation before relying on a particular metric or integration.
