A Node.js /health route can tell a platform whether a service instance is responsive or ready to receive traffic. It cannot prove that a nightly report, backup, import, or other scheduled task finished. Monitor those jobs separately with an external heartbeat that receives a success signal only after the work completes.
What does a health endpoint tell you?
A health endpoint is an HTTP route that a deployment platform or other probe can call to assess a running service. Its meaning depends on what the platform does with the response. In Kubernetes, three probe types have distinct roles:
- Liveness: indicates whether a container should continue running. A failed liveness probe can lead Kubernetes to restart it.
- Readiness: indicates whether an instance should receive traffic. It can fail when the service cannot currently handle requests, even if its process is still running.
- Startup: gives a slow-starting application time to initialize before liveness and readiness checks begin.
These semantics are Kubernetes-specific; other platforms may use different names or behavior. See the Kubernetes documentation on liveness, readiness, and startup probes.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Make a probe response small and bounded, and decide whether it represents liveness, readiness, or both according to how your platform uses it. Avoid making a liveness check fail merely because a downstream dependency is temporarily unavailable if the Node.js process itself can continue. Readiness is often the more suitable signal when an instance should stop receiving traffic because it cannot serve requests.

A health route is not a process supervisor. Node.js v26.10.0 documentation says, “It is not safe to resume normal operation after ‘uncaughtException’.” It also recommends using an external monitor in a separate process to detect application failures and recover or restart as needed. See the Node.js process documentation.
How do I know if my health check endpoint is working?
Check both the HTTP result and what your deployment platform does with it. A successful response shows that the route answered; it does not establish that every dependency or scheduled task is healthy. Confirm that the route is configured as the intended probe type and that the platform’s observed status changes as expected when the relevant condition changes.

- For liveness, verify that the probe represents whether the process should keep running, rather than general dependency availability.
- For readiness, verify that an unavailable instance is removed from traffic when it cannot serve requests.
- For slow initialization, use a startup probe where the platform supports it, so ordinary checks do not act too early.
Probe behavior and recovery actions are deployment-specific. The Kubernetes probe documentation explains its own semantics; do not assume another platform behaves identically.

How do I monitor my cron jobs?
Give each independently important task its own external heartbeat check, with a descriptive name and an expected schedule. The monitor expects a request on that schedule; if it does not arrive by the deadline plus configured grace period, it can alert that the job is late or down. Send the success request only after the task’s meaningful work has completed.

A service health route and a job heartbeat answer different questions: the route probes a running service, while the heartbeat reports that a particular scheduled task reached its success point. A service can answer health requests while its backup or data import has failed to run.
Match the schedule to how the task runs
- For a regular interval, configure the expected period and a realistic grace period.
- For a task tied to a wall-clock schedule, use a cron or calendar schedule when the monitor supports it. Set the timezone used by the scheduler; a schedule without the intended timezone can be evaluated at the wrong local time.
- For jobs with variable runtime, use start and success signals if the monitor supports them. The monitor can then allow time for completion after the start signal, subject to its configured grace behavior.
Healthchecks.io documents simple intervals, cron, and systemd OnCalendar schedules; its cron checks require a timezone. See its check configuration documentation.

Send success and failure at the right points
- Start the task and record its start time.
- If supported and useful, send the monitor’s start signal.
- Run the actual work, preserving its exit status and useful diagnostic output.
- Send success only after the work completes successfully.
- On failure, send an explicit failure signal with safe diagnostic context, then return a failing exit code to the scheduler.
Do not send success from a finally block: it runs after failures as well as successes. Healthchecks.io supports optional start and failure signals. Better Stack documents a /fail path and reporting job output and exit-code information. See the Healthchecks.io documentation and Better Stack heartbeat monitoring documentation.

|---|---|---|
| Missed-run detection | Unique ping URL, expected timing, grace period, and alerts when a check is late or down. | Expected heartbeat frequency and grace period; a missed heartbeat triggers an incident. |
| Calendar schedules | Simple, cron, and systemd OnCalendar schedules; timezone required for cron checks. |
The cited documentation describes a periodic cron-style example; exact schedule options for a specific use case are not established there. |
| Failure reporting | Optional start and failure signals; check configuration supports cron schedules. | A /fail path and documented exit-code and output reporting. |
| Other selection factors | Schedule model, timezone, grace period, allowed HTTP method, and integrations. | Frequency, grace period, escalation settings, and failure-payload needs. |
Check each service’s current documentation for the schedule, timezone, alert routing, and failure-reporting behavior you need. The cited pages do not establish a like-for-like price or independent reliability comparison.
