To find out what failed in a homelab, monitor three things: whether users can reach each service, whether its host and containers are healthy, and whether alerts reach you when something changes. An uptime checker can show that a service stopped responding; metrics from Prometheus and dashboards in Grafana can add clues about host or container problems. Neither one automatically identifies every root cause.
Decide what “failed” means
A homelab service, its host, and its performance are separate things to monitor. A web app can be unreachable while its server still responds to network checks, and a server can remain online while the app is slow or returning errors.
- Service availability: Check the URL or endpoint a person would actually use. An HTTP check can reveal that the app’s page or API is not responding as expected.
- Host availability: A ping or TCP-port check can indicate whether a machine or a particular network service is reachable. It answers a narrower question than “is the app working?”
- Degradation: A service may respond while the host is running short on memory, disk space, or CPU capacity. Metrics can help expose that pressure.
A successful ping is not proof that an application is healthy. Choose checks that match the symptom you care about, and avoid treating one kind of check as a complete health assessment.

Use an uptime checker for a short list of services
A self-hosted uptime checker such as Uptime Kuma is a straightforward starting point for tracking whether selected services respond. Configure checks for the user-facing URLs or endpoints that matter to you. Consult the documentation for the release you install for current monitor types and notification integrations; those details can change.

Availability monitoring gives you a useful first signal: a check passed, failed, or stopped reporting. By itself, it generally does not explain whether a failure came from the application, a container, the host, the network, or another dependency.
Add metrics when you need diagnostic clues
If you run several machines or containers, or need to investigate recurring failures, add a metrics stack. Prometheus collects and queries time-series metrics; exporters expose measurements for it to collect. Grafana can display the resulting data in dashboards. The Prometheus overview describes its metrics model and query capabilities.
One homelab implementation uses Node Exporter for host metrics and cAdvisor for container metrics, with Prometheus collecting data and Grafana displaying it. Its README describes CPU, memory, disk, network, load, and uptime monitoring for that specific setup; those measurements are an example, not a guarantee that every stack provides them automatically.
Correlate the evidence instead of guessing at a cause
When a service check fails, look at related host and container metrics around the same time. A host that has stopped reporting, a container that has stopped, or sustained resource pressure may narrow the investigation. Check logs and recent changes as well: a metric or failed scrape is evidence, not a definitive diagnosis.
A Prometheus target marked down means Prometheus could not obtain metrics from that target. It does not, by itself, establish why. Compare it with the service check, host reachability, logs, and the timing of configuration or deployment changes.

Choose a setup that fits the question
| Need | Starting point | What it tells you | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Know whether a few services respond | A self-hosted uptime checker such as Uptime Kuma | Whether configured service checks pass or fail | Quick to understand, but availability checks alone provide limited context about host or container resource problems. |
| Investigate host or container problems across machines | Prometheus with appropriate exporters and Grafana; add Alertmanager for notification routing | Historical metrics and rule-based conditions that can help explain symptoms | Requires more configuration and ongoing maintenance. The example implementation demonstrates one combination. |
| Learn when the local monitoring system stops reporting | An independent external uptime or heartbeat check | Whether the inside monitor has gone silent from outside its local failure domain | Adds an outside dependency; the checker must not share the same host, network, or power failure that you want it to detect. |
A dedicated monitoring machine is optional. The cited implementation reports testing its Linux monitoring host on a Raspberry Pi 5, but that does not establish that a separate device is necessary or better than suitable hardware you already own.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Make alerts tell you what needs attention
A dashboard is useful when you look at it, but it does not ensure that you learn about a failure promptly. Configure a small set of alerts for conditions that merit action, then test that notifications arrive through a channel you actually check.
In the Prometheus alerting model, alert rules identify conditions and Alertmanager handles grouping, routing, silencing, and inhibition of notifications. Grafana Alerting documents its own alert rules, contact points, and notification policies. Choose the workflow that fits your stack; a dashboard alone is not an alert-delivery plan.
Begin with alerts that change what you do
- A critical user-facing endpoint is down.
- A host or important container is unavailable.
- Disk, memory, or CPU pressure has reached a level that needs action.
Tune thresholds, severity, repeat intervals, and routing for your own machines and workload. A threshold in someone else’s configuration is an example, not a universal safe limit. If every minor warning produces an urgent notification, important failures can become easier to miss.
For scale, one community-built configuration reports a 15-second scrape interval and 30-day retention, along with sample disk, memory, and CPU alert thresholds. These are that repository’s settings, not recommended defaults or population-wide standards. Its README also reports testing on Linux with a Raspberry Pi 5; it does not establish a general capacity guarantee for other hardware or deployments.

Monitor the monitor from outside its failure domain
If your only uptime checker runs on the same host, home network, or power supply as the services it watches, it may stop reporting at the same time they do. A separate external uptime or heartbeat check can tell you when the inside monitor has gone silent. A self-hosting community discussion illustrates this concern and the practice, but it is anecdotal rather than evidence of a measured failure rate.

Independence matters more than simply adding another process: a second monitor on the same host does little to reveal that host’s failure. Consider which outages you want to detect, then place the outside check beyond the relevant shared risks.
Account for the work of self-hosting
Self-hosted monitoring gives you local control, but you are responsible for keeping it usable and protected. The implementation README advises restricting access and keeping images updated. Plan for updates, storage, backups, access restrictions, and reliable notification delivery; monitoring data and dashboards are not useful if the system cannot be reached or its alerts cannot get through.
When a notification arrives, treat it as a starting point: establish whether the service, host, or monitoring target failed, then correlate the available metrics, logs, and recent changes. Monitoring can narrow the search; it cannot guarantee an automatic root-cause answer.
