GPU monitoring software can show how much power a supported graphics card draws as a whole, but that number does not reveal how power is divided among its connectors or contacts. To check your setup, identify the exact GPU, PSU, and cable arrangement; log board-power readings during a representative workload; and inspect the connections only after shutting the system down. Treat signs of a damaged or overheating connector as a reason to stop using the system—not as an invitation to run another stress test.
What “GPU power draw” can—and cannot—tell you
“Imbalance” can mean unequal load across multiple GPU power connectors, a poor contact within one plug, or simply higher-than-expected total GPU wattage. These are different problems. NVIDIA’s nvidia-smi documentation describes supported power readings as measurements for the entire board, not independent readings for each connector.
That makes board-power telemetry useful for tracking the card’s overall demand, but not for proving that one connector is safe. A normal-looking total, a reading near the card’s rated power, or a single voltage value cannot establish how current is shared between the slot, auxiliary connectors, cable branches, or individual contacts. The cited documentation does not establish a universal software warning threshold for connector imbalance or a general consumer procedure for measuring current at each contact.

Identify the exact GPU and power path
Before interpreting readings or changing cables, record the full graphics-card model and board-partner variant, PSU model, cable type, and whether the connection is a native PSU cable or an adapter. Then check the card maker’s specifications and instructions for that exact model. NVIDIA’s GeForce comparison illustrates that total graphics power and connector requirements vary by model; its listed values are not interchangeable recommendations for other cards.

- Match the GPU’s required connector type and arrangement to its own documentation.
- Use only cables approved for the exact PSU. A modular cable that physically fits is not necessarily wired compatibly.
- Do not substitute a CPU/EPS cable for a PCIe GPU cable based on plug shape. NVIDIA’s workstation connector guide shows different pin assignments for CPU 8-pin, PCIe 8-pin, and PCIe 6-pin connectors.
- If using an adapter or a newer high-power connector, follow the graphics-card and PSU makers’ specific instructions; do not assume cables with similar names are interchangeable.
NVIDIA’s RTX 40 Series support page lists compatible cable options for particular configurations. It is a compatibility reference, not a method for measuring or diagnosing connector imbalance.
Monitor supported board-power readings
Use nvidia-smi on supported NVIDIA GPUs
For a quick inspection, run nvidia-smi -q -d POWER in a terminal. Available fields depend on the GPU and driver. NVIDIA documents instantaneous board power and, on supported products, average board power. The documented average is measured over the previous second; it is a time window, not a guarantee about accuracy or connector-level response.

Do not confuse the card’s current power limit with its measured draw. A power limit is a ceiling or configured constraint; the power-draw field reports a measurement. The interface also supports querying GPU fields for logging, but supported field names vary. Check the live nvidia-smi documentation for the fields available on your installation rather than assuming one query works on every GPU.
Capture a workload with FrameView
NVIDIA’s FrameView user guide describes capturing performance and power data during a run, which can help compare GPU demand with performance. The guide notes a measurement caveat for power used by devices connected to the GPU’s USB-C port. A captured GPU power value remains a board-level figure; it is not automatically a reading for each power connector.

Compare readings under representative conditions
- Record a baseline. Note the idle reading, GPU temperature, utilization, and power limit if available.
- Run a representative workload. Choose the game, application, or compute task that reflects your normal use, and record the workload and duration alongside the readings.
- Compare like with like. Check the results against the exact GPU model’s published specifications and configured power limit, not a different card’s rating or a generic figure.
- Look at trends. Consider whether draw rises with workload and whether the card approaches its configured or specified envelope. A reading that differs from a nominal specification can have several explanations, including workload, boost behavior, power-limit settings, and sensor or product support differences.
NVIDIA’s GeForce comparison page lists example Total Graphics Power figures from 130 W to 575 W across different products, as accessed in 2026. Those model-specific values are not a universal GPU range, a prediction for your card, or an imbalance threshold.
Inspect a suspected connector problem safely
If you suspect a loose, damaged, or overheating connection, do not keep running stress tests to investigate it. Shut down the computer and remove mains power according to the system and PSU makers’ instructions before touching or reseating any GPU power connector. Look for incomplete seating, housing damage, discoloration, softened or deformed plastic, or a cable placed under mechanical strain.

- The LCD power tester is a powerful power test device. This power tester only needs to be connected to the ATX connector of the power supply to easily and intuitively know whether the output of each power supply is normal. It can detect ATX, BTX, ITX, TFX computer power supply, and can display various voltage and PG values in liquid crystal to quickly detect the performance of computer power supply.
- The LCD displays various parameters such as output voltage and PG. When each parameter exceeds the normal value, the buzzer will sound a warning and the corresponding value will flash.
- It can measure the voltage of each group of power supply 3.3V/+5V/+12V/-12V/SB+5V/PG, and also measure the output wire P4/P6/P8/SATA/IDE, external DIE/SATA/P6/P8 is the light Displayed, there is no LCD voltage. Only the 24pin or 20pin will have the LCD voltage.
- It has LCD intuitive and accurate display voltage (+/-0.01V), automatic fault alarm, complete test interface, small and beautiful appearance, and many test functions. It is the best choice for quickly detecting PC power.
- Support 20Pin, 24Pin ATX interface / SATA interface / 4Pin, 8Pin interface / PCI-E graphics card 6Pin interface / floppy drive interface / ATE hard disk interface.
Stop using the system and contact the graphics-card or PSU maker, or a qualified technician, if you see signs of overheating, notice an unusual odor, or experience recurring shutdowns. These symptoms warrant inspection; they do not, by themselves, identify which connector or contact is at fault. The NVIDIA materials cited here do not specify a universal visual inspection threshold that proves a connection safe.
How to interpret connector sense signals
Some products use sense signals to identify available power, but that is not the same as software reporting current through every pin. NVIDIA’s H100 NVL product guide says that this datacenter accelerator reads Sense0 and Sense1 to identify available power from its 16-pin connector, and specifies up to 400 W from that auxiliary connector. Those statements apply to the H100 NVL; they do not establish per-pin current monitoring on consumer GeForce cards or a consumer safety limit.

When an external meter is not a shortcut
An inline device or external instrumentation might measure electrical behavior in some setups, but the cited sources do not establish a general consumer device, safe universal measurement method, or applicable imbalance threshold. Do not insert an unverified adapter into a high-current GPU power path as a diagnostic shortcut. If connector-level electrical measurements are necessary, seek advice from the GPU or PSU maker or a qualified technician.
