To catch a cron job that fails, never runs, or hangs, give it an external monitor that knows when the next run is due. Have the job send a success signal only after its work finishes; if the signal is missing past a deliberate grace period, the monitor can notify the person or team responsible. For hung-job detection, add a start signal and a completion deadline or duration check.
Choose what the monitor needs to detect
A basic heartbeat answers one question: did this job report success on time? It can reveal a missed run or a job that did not reach its success step, but it may not explain what happened. For more useful diagnosis, report distinct lifecycle events: job started, job completed successfully, or job failed, with an exit status or error context when the monitoring method supports it.
- Missed run: no expected success signal arrived.
- Unsuccessful run: the job reported a failure, ideally with a useful status or context.
- Hung or overlong run: a start signal arrived but completion did not arrive within the allowed window, or the measured runtime exceeded a threshold.
Send success only after the useful work is complete. A ping at the beginning of a script proves that it started, not that it finished.

Create a separate check for each important scheduled job rather than combining unrelated jobs into one heartbeat. Separate checks make it clearer which task missed its expected run and let you set an appropriate schedule, grace period, and alert owner for each.

- Create the monitor check. For example, Healthchecks.io’s documented workflow is to create a check with a unique ping URL, add an HTTP request to the job, and alert if the expected ping does not arrive. See its documentation.
- Set the expected schedule and timezone. Configure the actual cron expression and the timezone used by the server’s cron daemon. Cron commonly follows local system time; a timezone mismatch can make a healthy run appear late or make a missed run go unnoticed. Healthchecks.io explains schedule and grace configuration in its check configuration guide.
- Choose a grace period. Grace is the amount of lateness the monitor allows before alerting. Make it long enough for ordinary scheduling and runtime variation, but short enough to surface a consequential delay. There is no universal value: base it on the job’s cadence and the impact of lateness.
- Add the success signal at the end of the job. Use the monitor’s documented ping method only after the work has succeeded. For richer diagnosis, add start and failure signals as well, if supported.
- Set an alert destination and owner. Route the notification to a monitored team email, chat, incident-management system, SMS, or webhook, and make clear who is expected to respond.
Catch jobs that start but never finish
A success-only heartbeat will eventually identify a missing completion signal, but start and completion events make a stuck run easier to distinguish from a job that never started. A monitor can use the start event to begin a completion window and alert if success does not arrive within that window.
Healthchecks.io documents start and success signals for setting a maximum completion window. Its systemd example sends a start event before the command and reports the resulting exit status afterward; this gives the check a completion result rather than just a generic ping. See the systemd integration guide.

Cronitor documents duration assertions that can flag runs that take longer than expected. A minimum-duration assertion can also flag a job that exits suspiciously quickly, which may indicate that it skipped useful work. Set thresholds from the job’s normal operating pattern and consequences; example values in vendor documentation should not be copied blindly. Cronitor describes its schedule and duration controls in its cron job monitoring documentation.

Reduce false alarms without hiding real problems
Schedules, grace periods, and failure tolerance are trade-offs. A very tight grace period can alert on ordinary delays; a very generous one can postpone detection until the missed run matters. Set tolerance according to the actual scheduler, job cadence, and operational impact.

Cronitor documents cron expressions, intervals, time-of-day schedules, schedule tolerance, failure tolerance, grace periods, and duration assertions. Those controls can help distinguish expected lateness or transient failures from conditions that need attention. Its monitor configuration documentation describes these options.
Check that the monitor’s schedule matches the job’s real schedule, including timezone and daylight-saving behavior where relevant. If the job’s schedule changes, update the monitor too; otherwise, alerts can be misleading even when the script itself is healthy.

Test the full alert path
Before depending on a check, exercise it safely: use a test check or a non-critical job, deliberately withhold its expected success signal or send a failure signal, and confirm that the intended person receives the alert. Then restore the successful path and verify that the check returns to a healthy state.
A correctly configured check is not enough if its notification cannot reach anyone. Consider the failure modes of the monitoring endpoint, outbound network access, and alert destination: if a job cannot contact the monitor, or the monitor cannot deliver the notification, the alert may not arrive. Vendor documentation describes available integrations, but only a test of your own route confirms that it works for your setup.

Choose a monitoring approach
The right choice depends on how much detail and control operators need, not on a universal product ranking. Healthchecks.io’s comparison is vendor-authored; use it as a description of the products, not as an independent evaluation. See Healthchecks.io’s comparison page.
| Need | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Simple missed-run alerts | A unique HTTP ping for each job, an expected schedule, grace configuration, and a notification route. Healthchecks.io documents this basic heartbeat workflow in its documentation. |
| More detail about individual runs | Support for start, success, and failure signals, including exit status or context where available. Healthchecks.io documents lifecycle signals and a systemd example in its systemd guide; Cronitor describes its monitoring features in its cron job monitoring documentation. |
| Runtime and tolerance controls | Completion windows, duration assertions, schedule tolerance, or failure tolerance matched to the job. Cronitor documents these controls in its monitor configuration documentation. |
| Existing team alerting workflow | Confirm that the service supports your actual destination and account. Cronitor lists email, Slack, Microsoft Teams, SMS, PagerDuty, and webhooks in its notification documentation. Healthchecks.io documents notification integrations in its documentation. Availability and plan restrictions can change, so verify current support before rollout. |
A lightweight heartbeat is a reasonable fit for simple scheduled commands. A lifecycle-oriented monitor is a better fit when operators need per-run duration, explicit failure events, platform integrations, or richer diagnostic history. Feature availability and deployment options vary by service; compare the current documentation against your requirements.
