Fiber-optic sensors monitor bridge health by measuring strain, temperature, or vibration-related response at selected locations or along a length of fiber. The right approach depends on what engineers need to observe: fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors measure at chosen points, distributed fiber-optic sensing (DFOS) maps changes along an installed sensing fiber, and distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) can detect dynamic response along suitable existing telecommunications fiber. Their readings support engineering assessment; they do not, by themselves, determine whether a bridge is safe or should close.

What fiber-optic bridge monitoring measures

A monitoring system turns changes in light traveling through optical fiber into measurements associated with the structure. Depending on the sensor and setup, those measurements can show strain at particular points, changes along a sensing route, or vibration-related behavior. Engineers use the data to track responses to traffic and other loads, compare readings over time, and investigate areas of concern.

Fiber is only one part of the system. A useful installation also needs suitable attachment or cable routing, an optical interrogator to read the signal, a data-collection and analysis plan, and a way to interpret results in the context of the bridge. Fiber-optic sensors are relatively immune to electromagnetic interference, as FHWA notes, but installation quality and measurement interpretation still matter.

How the three main approaches differ

Approach Where measurements come from Best suited to Key considerations
FBG sensors Selected sensing points or arrays of points on or in the bridge Strain monitoring at critical locations Requires sensors to be installed where they can capture relevant structural behavior; attachment and temperature interpretation matter.
Distributed fiber-optic sensing (DFOS) Measurements along an installed sensing fiber Dense spatial coverage, including monitoring for changes such as crack development or strain along a structural element Installation route, spatial pitch, acquisition rate, data volume, and processing needs must be considered together.
Distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) Dynamic measurements along suitable fiber, potentially existing telecommunications fiber Vibration-based analysis, including identifying bridge modal behavior Existing fiber must be accessible and suitable, and signals can have more noise and uncertainty than those from well-calibrated dedicated sensors.

FBG: measure at chosen structural locations

A fiber Bragg grating is a feature in optical fiber whose optical response changes with strain and temperature. An optical interrogator reads the response, and the sensor can be installed at a selected point or used in an array. FHWA’s 2014 discussion describes a bridge example with FBG strain sensors at 40 locations. The sensors detected vehicle-induced strain and the response to a person running and jumping on the bridge.

In the Hercílio Luz Bridge rehabilitation case, HBK reports a hybrid monitoring system with 284 optical sensors read by three FiberSensing interrogators. Optical sensors monitored strain at critical points, alongside electrical sensors for inclination, temperature, wind, and sea current. The project used spot-welded sensors on permanent steel members and bonded sensors on eye-bars scheduled for replacement. Strain and temperature measurements were combined to compensate for temperature effects. These details describe that project, not a universal FBG installation specification.

DFOS: measure along an installed sensing fiber

Distributed fiber-optic sensing uses changes in light scattered along the fiber to measure conditions across a continuous route rather than only at separately selected sensor points. A 2025 paper on German bridge deployments describes Rayleigh-backscatter measurements of distributed strain and temperature using a LUNA ODiSI 6000 series interrogator.

For those projects, the team installed monolithic sensors 3 mm in diameter in approximately 5 × 5 mm milled grooves and bonded them with quick-setting injection mortar. The reported gauge pitch was 2.6 mm, with quasi-static acquisition from 1 to 5 Hz depending on sensor length. These are configurations used for the paper’s measurements, not general specifications for DFOS equipment. A finer pitch can capture more spatial detail, but it also increases data and processing demands and can limit the maximum sensor length.

The paper describes three deployments:

  • Approximately 1,740 m of sensor on 14 pier heads of the Itztal railway bridge for near-surface crack monitoring.
  • 270 m along three superstructures of a Dresden road-and-tram bridge for assessment of prestressing-tendon stress-corrosion cracking.
  • 21 m on the B192 road bridge in Waren for structural safety assessment and calibration-vehicle runs.

The authors report resolving cracks as small as 0.02 mm in their study and describe monitoring areas inaccessible to visual inspection. That reported crack width is specific to the study and setup; it is not a guaranteed detection limit for every DFOS system or bridge.

DAS: use fiber to observe dynamic response

Distributed acoustic sensing sends laser pulses through fiber and analyzes returning Rayleigh backscatter. Changes in optical phase can be related to strain or strain rate along the cable, yielding a dense set of virtual dynamic sensing locations. Unlike FBG and many DFOS deployments, a DAS installation may be able to use existing dark telecommunications fiber, avoiding the installation and maintenance of a separate sensor at every measurement point.

A 2023 field study used an existing telecommunications cable in conduit beneath the three-span Coyote Creek bridge in San Jose, California. The researchers estimated the bridge’s first three natural frequencies and reconstructed strain and displacement mode shapes at meter-scale resolution. They also identify noise and uncertainty as limitations compared with well-calibrated dedicated sensors. The paper discusses interrogator capabilities of up to 100 km of cable, 250 Hz, and 1 m channel spacing; these are capabilities cited in its discussion, not guaranteed outcomes for every system or deployment.

Choose the method around the monitoring question

Begin with the behavior engineers need to observe, then select sensing coverage, installation, and acquisition to match. Local strain at a known critical member may call for FBG sensors. A need to follow changes across a longer route, such as near-surface cracking, may favor DFOS. A vibration or modal-analysis question may suit DAS, particularly where accessible, suitable dark fiber already exists.

  • Local strain: Identify the members or locations that matter and consider point sensors such as FBGs.
  • Crack or strain changes along a route: Consider DFOS, accounting for the installation path, desired spatial detail, and analysis workload.
  • Vibration and modal behavior: Consider dynamic sensing such as DAS, and verify fiber access, interrogator compatibility, signal quality, and acquisition requirements.
  • Multiple behaviors: A hybrid arrangement may be appropriate. The Hercílio Luz project, for example, combined optical and electrical sensors for different measurements.

Quasi-static tracking of long-term strain or crack changes and dynamic measurement of traffic or vibration are not interchangeable tasks. Acquisition rate should match the behavior being captured: FHWA cautions that slow, threshold-only collection is unsuitable for highly irregular dynamic bridge loading. Sensor configuration, interrogator, and analysis should therefore be planned as a single system rather than selected independently.

Plan installation, temperature compensation, and data interpretation

Place and attach sensors for structural relevance

Sensor placement should follow a structural assessment of load paths and suspected problem areas, not just convenient access. Documented examples include girders, decks, pier heads, and critical steel members. Installation methods vary: sensors may be embedded, bonded to a surface, spot-welded, or installed in milled grooves. Whichever method is chosen, it must protect the fiber and transfer structural strain reliably to the sensor.

Account for temperature before interpreting strain

Temperature changes affect fiber-optic sensor response and can complicate interpretation of strain. Use temperature sensors or a documented compensation method appropriate to the installation. The German DFOS study compensated thermal effects when comparing baseline and follow-up readings; the Hercílio Luz project paired strain and temperature sensing. A strain trend should not be treated as mechanical change until relevant thermal effects have been considered.

Build the data and analysis path

Specify how readings will be acquired, stored, checked, and analyzed, as well as how results will reach the people responsible for the bridge. The FHWA report emphasizes collecting and storing data at a rate sufficient for an owner or engineer to understand structural behavior during service. Depending on the monitoring task, the complete arrangement may include an interrogator, acquisition hardware, monitoring software, analysis, and alert generation or remote support.

Use alerts as decision support

Before monitoring begins, establish baseline behavior and a process for identifying meaningful change. Interpretation should account for environmental effects, sensor condition, measurement uncertainty, and the bridge’s engineering context. The cited sources do not establish a universal fiber-sensor alarm threshold for bridge safety or closure. Significant findings need review by qualified bridge personnel; sensor readings do not replace required inspections or engineering judgment.
