You can often keep framing and operating a camera with its rear screen unavailable by using a manufacturer phone app, computer tethering, or an external monitor—but the right option depends on the exact camera model. Check two things separately: whether the setup displays a live image and whether it also lets you change settings or trigger capture.
Choose the setup for the job
First decide what you need to do: compose a shot, monitor the image, release the shutter, change settings, or control video recording. A connection that displays video does not necessarily provide camera control.
| Option | What it can provide | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Manufacturer phone or tablet app | Depending on the camera, live view, remote capture, and some settings. | Exact model support, required app and phone OS, Wi-Fi connection, and which controls are available. Fujifilm notes that some models do not support remote live view and that camera controls other than power may be disabled while connected wirelessly. FUJIFILM Camera Remote: Live View Shooting. |
| Computer tethering | Remote camera operation and, on supported setups, live view. | Camera compatibility, software version, computer requirements, and wired or wireless connection limits. Fujifilm documents tethered photography for the X-M5; Nikon’s NX Tether 2.5 supports compatible cameras, with some models receiving limited functions. FUJIFILM Tether App; Nikon NX Tether Version 2.5. |
| HDMI monitor | External live image; control depends on the camera and the workflow. | Camera HDMI output, matching cable connectors, compatible receiving device, and whether a separate control link is required. In Sony’s documented Monitor & Control setup, HDMI monitoring can be paired with remote control over Wi-Fi or USB. |
| UVC monitor | Live image from a camera that supports USB streaming. | Camera and control-device support, USB Type-C connection, and the required camera USB Streaming setting. In Sony’s documented workflow, UVC provides monitoring but not remote control. |
Start with the exact camera model
Look up the model in its official manual or support page rather than relying on a brand-wide assumption. Confirm support for the specific feature you need—remote live view, tethering, HDMI output, or UVC/USB streaming—and check any firmware, app, operating-system, or receiving-device requirements listed there.

For a phone-based option, FUJIFILM says its Camera Remote app can “Take pictures remotely from a smartphone or tablet,” but live-view availability and controls vary by camera. The documented workflow requires Wi-Fi, and some camera models are excluded. See FUJIFILM’s live-view instructions for the model-specific details.

Use a phone or tablet for a simple remote setup
If your camera’s app supports live view and the controls you need, it may be the simplest way to frame and trigger shots without the rear display. Before relying on it, check whether you can do more than see the image: app support for shutter release or settings adjustments is not the same across models. Also account for the wireless connection; Fujifilm warns that controls on the camera other than its power button may be disabled while wirelessly connected.
Connect a larger display over HDMI or UVC
An external display is useful when you need a larger view, but the signal path and control path may be different. Sony’s Monitor & Control HDMI/UVC guide illustrates the distinction:

- HDMI: Use an HDMI cable that fits the camera’s output and the receiving device’s input. Sony’s documented workflow supports remote control over Wi-Fi or USB alongside HDMI monitoring.
- UVC: Use a USB Type-C cable and enable the camera’s USB Streaming setting, as required by Sony’s instructions. Sony states, “For UVC output, remote control is not supported.”
That Sony workflow does not support a USB Type-C-to-HDMI adapter cable. This is a workflow-specific warning, not a universal rule for every camera and monitor. Sony also says its displayed live-view image is HD (1080p), even when the camera output is 4K (2160p).

Nikon NX Tether 2.5
Nikon’s NX Tether Version 2.5 page describes remote live view and control for compatible cameras. Tethered connectivity uses USB; wireless tethering is available with specified compatible cameras or transmitters, and functionality may be limited. Nikon also identifies models with limited tethering functions separately, so check its current model list and system requirements before choosing a workflow.
Follow this compatibility check before connecting
- Identify the camera model. Find its official manual or support page and confirm the feature you want: live view, remote capture, tethering, HDMI, or USB streaming.
- Separate viewing from control. Write down whether you need framing only, image monitoring, shutter release, settings changes, or video controls. Verify each capability for the proposed setup.
- Choose a connection the camera supports. Use an app over Wi-Fi, the maker’s tethering software over its specified connection, or a documented HDMI/UVC route.
- Check the receiving device and software. Confirm that the phone, computer, monitor, or control device is supported, along with any app version, operating-system, or firmware requirements.
- Match ports and cables. Check the camera-side connector, receiving-device input, cable direction, and required camera output mode. Do not assume a cable works simply because its plugs appear to fit.
- Test the complete operation. Confirm the image appears and separately test every control you need before using the setup for a shoot or recording.
Account for connection limits
Wireless connections can be convenient, but they may limit camera controls or behave inconsistently. Sony notes that unstable Wi-Fi can cause focus and framing overlays on screen to appear offset from the live image. For a cable-based workflow, a long or mismatched cable can make placement difficult, and the camera must support the selected output mode. Choose based on the full setup—camera, connection, software, and display—not just the screen you want to use.
