To monitor and audit an enterprise AI agent, make each run traceable from its initiating user or service through the agent’s identity, permissions, retrieved information, tool calls, policy decisions, and final outcome. Link those records across systems, monitor both operational health and agent behavior, and assign people to review alerts and investigate incidents. Logs alone are not governance: the organization also needs ownership, access controls, data-handling rules, and a defined response process.

What should an agent audit be able to show?

An investigation should be able to answer who or what initiated a run, which agent and version acted, what authority it had, which systems or tools it used, what controls applied, and what happened as a result. It should also show whether a person reviewed, approved, or escalated the action when required.

Traditional logs, metrics, and traces are a starting point, but agent activity needs additional context: run identity, retrieval provenance, tool names and arguments, effective permissions, policy outcomes, and evaluation results. Microsoft Learn’s guidance on observability for generative and agentic AI describes this as evolving traditional observability to include AI-native signals, evaluation, and governance.

A trace and an audit record serve related but different purposes. A trace links the ordered steps of a run so teams can troubleshoot behavior across services. A durable audit record preserves the identity, authority, and policy-relevant actions needed to review what happened later. A dashboard may reveal a spike in tool calls; the linked events help explain which run caused it and what the agent did.

Build an inventory before collecting agent events

Start with a record for each production agent, and update it when its model, configuration, permissions, purpose, or integrations change. This creates the context needed to interpret telemetry and identify who is accountable.

  • Ownership and purpose: accountable owner, business purpose, operating environment, and escalation contact.
  • Identity and scope: agent identity, connected systems and tools, accessible data classes, and permissions.
  • Deployment details: software and configuration version, deployment environment, and risk tier.
  • Lifecycle status: onboarding, material changes, reviews, and retirement or decommissioning.

Microsoft’s agent governance guidance emphasizes designated ownership and controlled onboarding, while its maturity guidance calls for organization-wide standards and lifecycle ownership. These are governance principles, not a requirement to adopt Microsoft products.

Define an event contract for every run

Agree on a minimum event model before connecting dashboards or alert rules. The fields below are a practical synthesis of Microsoft’s recommendations; they are not a claim that any one product emits every field by default.

Event group Useful fields What it helps establish
Identity and context Agent identifier; initiating user or service context; timestamp; conversation, run, and trace identifiers; environment; software or configuration version. Which agent acted, for whom, and in which deployment.
Execution and provenance Request and response references; retrieval-source provenance; tool name; arguments or a protected representation; effective permissions; invocation result; parent and child step links. What information and capabilities the agent used, and how a chain of delegated actions unfolded.
Governance decisions Policy or control applied; allow, deny, or intervention decision; required approval and approver, if applicable; escalation outcome. Whether the action followed the organization’s rules and what happened when a control intervened.
Operations and evaluation Latency; error status; request and tool-call counts; token or service consumption where relevant; quality and safety evaluation results; baseline-deviation signals. Whether the service is healthy and whether behavior or results have changed meaningfully.

Decide field by field whether to retain raw content, redact it, store a protected representation, or keep only a reference. For example, a tool argument may contain sensitive information; an investigation may need to establish which argument was used without making its full value broadly accessible. Choose the representation that meets the audit need while limiting unnecessary exposure.

Link the run across tools and enterprise systems

Carry a stable run or trace identifier through the agent, orchestration layer, and connected tools wherever the architecture permits. Record parent-child relationships for delegated or chained work, and preserve event order with timestamps. Correlate these events with identity, security, and compliance records when supported, so an investigator can move from an agent action to the relevant system activity without relying on isolated log fragments.

Microsoft describes a platform-specific example in its Windows 365 for Agents documentation: prompts, tool usage, and outcomes can be captured and correlated across Entra, Defender, and Purview. That example illustrates the value of cross-service correlation; it does not establish that third-party agents produce the same fields or integrations by default.

Monitor health, quality, safety, and unusual behavior

Use operational metrics to spot service degradation and behavior signals to detect quality or safety problems. Establish a baseline for each agent and use case: a support agent that reads a knowledge base and a finance agent that can initiate transactions do not have the same expected behavior.

  • Service health: latency, errors, request volume, tool-call volume, and token or service consumption where relevant.
  • Quality and safety: evaluation results, policy decisions, interventions, and failures against defined expectations.
  • Behavior changes: meaningful deviations from the agent’s use-case baseline, such as an unexpected change in tool activity or access patterns.

Define an alert threshold and route before enabling an alert. For each alert, specify who reviews it, what trace or supporting evidence they inspect, when they should constrain or disable the agent, and how they record the investigation. Alerts without an owner or response procedure can identify a problem without producing a reliable intervention.

Protect telemetry as sensitive enterprise data

Agent traces may contain user prompts, responses, retrieved material, tool arguments, and confidential business context. Treat telemetry collection and retention as data-governance decisions, not merely logging settings.

Ubiquiti Cloud Gateway Ultra (UCG-Ultra)
  • Runs UniFi Network for full-stack network management
  • Manages 30+ UniFi Network devices and 300+ clients
  • 1 Gbps routing with IDS/IPS
  • Multi-WAN load balancing
  • 0.96" LCM status display
  • Set collection and retention rules that reflect privacy, data residency, minimization, and regulatory obligations.
  • Restrict access to people and systems with a defined operational or audit need.
  • Apply appropriate encryption and protect exports and downstream copies of records.
  • Review whether raw content is necessary, or whether redaction, a protected representation, or a reference will support the investigation.

Microsoft’s guidance recommends balancing forensic needs with privacy, residency, minimization, retention, access controls, and encryption. It does not prescribe a universal retention period or settle jurisdiction-specific legal requirements; organizations need to set those rules for their own circumstances.

Choose monitoring tools by coverage, not by dashboard count

Evaluate whether a monitoring approach supports the end-to-end record and response process, rather than comparing products on a single feature or assuming one vendor’s stack is required.

Evaluation area Question to ask
Coverage Can it represent agent identity, runs, tools, permissions, policy outcomes, and connected systems?
Trace correlation Can an investigator follow one action chain across the agent, tools, and services it touched?
Security operations Can relevant events reach identity, SIEM, threat-detection, and investigation workflows used by the organization?
Governance Does the approach support inventory, ownership, approvals, least privilege, review, and lifecycle controls?
Data handling Can the organization enforce access controls, encryption, residency, redaction, retention, and export requirements?
Evaluation and response Can teams evaluate quality and safety, establish behavioral baselines, route alerts, and reconstruct incidents?

Microsoft identifies Azure Monitor and Application Insights as observability components in its AI monitoring guidance. Their suitability depends on the organization’s architecture and tool ecosystem. Microsoft Agent 365 is described by Microsoft as a control plane for agent observation, governance, and security; specific capabilities and availability can change, so check current vendor documentation before making a deployment decision.

Use standards guidance as framing, not as a substitute for design

NIST’s March 9, 2026 announcement for Challenges to the Monitoring of Deployed AI Systems describes monitoring through questions of who, what, when, why, and how, and surfaces barriers, gaps, and open questions. The report draws on three practitioner workshops held in 2025 and a literature review. It is useful framing for a monitoring program, not a universal implementation recipe or evidence that a particular product meets an organization’s needs.
