You can monitor a web app for free by combining an external HTTP check with keyword validation, API checks, and targeted browser-flow tests. Start with the public URL, then add monitors for the paths that matter—especially login, checkout, webhooks, and certificate expiry. For many small sites, UptimeRobot’s documented free plan provides 50 monitors checked every five minutes and one status page; a self-hosted option such as Uptime Kuma avoids license fees but requires you to run and maintain a server.

What a free monitoring setup should prove

A single green homepage is not evidence that the whole application works. Monitoring should answer four separate questions:

  • Can an independent system reach the app? An HTTP or HTTPS check detects DNS, TLS, routing, connection, and basic availability failures.
  • Did the response contain the right application? A keyword check can catch an error page or empty shell returned with a successful HTTP status.
  • Are important services responding? Separate API, webhook, and dependency endpoints can fail while the homepage remains available.
  • Can a user complete a critical journey? A browser transaction check can open a page, submit a form, and verify the result.

Place at least one monitor outside the infrastructure that hosts your app. If the app and monitor share a network, region, or server, the same outage can disable both and hide the failure.

Build the monitor in layers

1. External HTTP or HTTPS check

Monitor the public URL with a GET request. Expect a successful status code, normally in the 2xx range, and set a timeout appropriate for your app. This is the cheapest and broadest first signal: it catches expired DNS records, certificate errors, load-balancer failures, refused connections, and complete outages.

  • UNIVERSAL CONNECTIVITY – USB-C power port (more durable and universal than previous micro USB), Gigabit Ethernet port, and USB 2.0 port for future expansion. Premium casing designed for rack mounting or standalone deployment in professional environments.

Do not treat the interval as the exact outage duration. With a five-minute schedule, a failure can be noticed on one check and recovery is reported on the next scheduled check. The detection and recovery timestamps therefore have a scheduling delay.

2. Keyword check

Add a phrase that should appear only when the page is usable—for example, a stable heading or a signed-in navigation label. This catches cases where a reverse proxy returns a friendly error document with status 200, or where the app serves an empty JavaScript shell.

Choose text that changes rarely. Avoid timestamps, rotating promotions, user names, and localized copy. If the page is rendered entirely by JavaScript, monitor a server-rendered marker or use a browser check instead.

3. API and dependency checks

Monitor important APIs separately from the homepage. Check the exact method, authentication requirement, expected status code, and a safe response field. Useful targets include health endpoints, search, payments, webhook receivers, and the API used by the first screen after login.

A health endpoint that only says the web process is alive may miss a database or queue failure. Where possible, make the check exercise the dependency without changing production data.

4. Browser transaction checks

Use a browser workflow when several actions must succeed together: open the login page, enter credentials, submit, and verify the account page; or add a harmless item to a test cart and verify the checkout step. Store credentials in the monitor’s secret or environment-variable facility, not in the script or URL.

5. SSL and domain-expiration checks

Enable certificate-expiry and domain-expiration monitoring when the provider supports it. These checks prevent a technically healthy app from becoming unreachable because a certificate or registration was allowed to lapse.

UptimeRobot: the simplest hosted starting point

UptimeRobot is a practical no-server choice for a small app or side project. Its 2026 free-plan documentation says the plan is available for commercial use, requires no credit card, includes 50 monitors, checks every five minutes, and includes one status page. The documented free monitor types are HTTP/website, keyword, ping, port, and heartbeat/cron.

Capability Documented free-plan detail What it is useful for
Monitor count 50 Separate checks for sites, APIs, jobs, and infrastructure
Interval Five minutes Basic availability; not one-minute detection
Status page One Incident visibility for users or clients
Monitor types HTTP/website, keyword, ping, port, heartbeat/cron Websites, content, hosts, services, and scheduled jobs
Credit card Not required Start monitoring without a paid subscription

Limits, alert integrations, and quotas can change, so confirm the current provider documentation before relying on a specific channel or commercial-use condition. Configure an alert to a channel someone watches, then deliberately stop a test endpoint or use a temporary failing monitor to verify that the notification arrives and recovery is recorded.

Better Stack for scripted browser journeys

Better Stack’s monitor API documents status, expected-status-code, keyword, ping, TCP, UDP, SMTP, POP, IMAP, DNS, and Playwright monitor types. Playwright scenarios can perform a browser workflow such as opening a login page, submitting credentials held in environment variables, and checking the resulting page.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This is the relevant distinction when a request check cannot prove that a real user journey works. Verify the provider’s current pricing page for the free allowance of each monitor type before treating a Playwright scenario as a permanently zero-cost option.

Uptime Kuma: self-hosted and license-free

Uptime Kuma is open-source, self-hosted monitoring software with Docker deployment instructions in its repository. It can suit a developer who already operates an always-on server and wants to avoid hosted-service quotas.

“Free” here means no software license fee, not no operating cost. You must maintain the host, apply updates, protect the monitoring dashboard, configure notifications, back up its data, and keep network access working. Do not place it only on the same server or network as the app: a shared infrastructure failure can take out both the service and its observer. An external hosted check can complement a local Uptime Kuma instance.

Choosing between the common options

Question Hosted monitor Self-hosted Uptime Kuma
Who runs the monitoring server? The provider You
Fastest setup Yes; create monitors in a web UI No; deploy and secure a host first
License fee Depends on plan; UptimeRobot documents a free plan No software license fee
Maintenance Provider operates the service Updates, backups, access, and alerts are your responsibility
Browser workflows Better Stack documents Playwright monitor types Availability depends on your deployment and tooling
Failure independence Usually external to your app; check provider geography Must be designed explicitly; same-host placement is risky

Compare services on hosting model, check interval, HTTP/keyword/API coverage, browser support, alert channels, status pages, history retention, and whether the monitor is independent of your app’s hosting environment. There is no established industry-wide uptime percentage or universal “best tool” statistic that can settle the choice for every app.

Exact setup checklist

  1. List public entry points. Record the homepage, login, API base, webhook receiver, status page, and any worker heartbeat endpoint.
  2. Create the external HTTP monitor. Use HTTPS, set the expected status, choose a timeout, and select a check location or provider outside your hosting environment.
  3. Add content validation. Require a stable keyword or response field that proves the expected page or API result was returned.
  4. Separate critical paths. Add individual monitors for login, checkout, and other revenue or support-critical journeys. Use a browser transaction check when multiple actions must succeed together.
  5. Cover scheduled work. Send a heartbeat from cron or a worker after each successful run, then alert when the heartbeat is late.
  6. Enable certificate and domain checks. Set warning lead times that leave enough time for renewal and DNS propagation.
  7. Configure notifications. Send alerts to a watched email, chat, or incident channel. Define who acknowledges, investigates, and closes an incident.
  8. Test failure and recovery. Use a disposable endpoint or maintenance window. Confirm the alert, escalation, status page update, and recovery notification.

Alert design that avoids noise

  • Require more than one failed check before paging for transient network errors, unless the endpoint is safety- or revenue-critical.
  • Use a longer timeout only when the endpoint’s normal response time justifies it; an excessive timeout delays detection.
  • Give each monitor a clear name containing the service, environment, and purpose.
  • Keep alert messages actionable: include the URL, failure type, first-seen time, and a link to logs or the runbook.
  • Route warning events, such as certificate expiry, differently from an active outage.
  • Review false positives and missed failures monthly; tune keywords and browser selectors when the application changes.

Common failures and fixes

The monitor reports a timeout

Check whether the endpoint is slow only from the monitor’s region, whether a firewall or allowlist blocks the provider, and whether DNS resolves consistently. Test a lightweight health URL and inspect server and load-balancer logs.

HTTP is green but users see an error

Add a keyword or structured-response assertion. A proxy, application shell, or custom error page may be returning status 200. For client-rendered pages, use a browser check that waits for a meaningful element.

Login checks fail intermittently

Use a dedicated account, stable selectors, and explicit waits for navigation or a post-login element. Check session expiry, MFA requirements, bot protection, rate limits, and whether the test account is locked.

Alerts never arrive

Inspect notification settings, spam or suppression rules, integration tokens, and escalation schedules. Trigger a controlled failure and record the delivered event before trusting the setup.

Uptime Kuma stops reporting

Check the host, container logs, disk space, restart policy, outbound network access, and notification credentials. Move the instance or add an external monitor if the host is also where the app runs.

Certificate warnings are wrong

Verify that the monitor resolves the same hostname users use, including redirects and the correct certificate chain. Test every hostname served by the application, not just the canonical domain.

If you need a rendered screenshot or visual evidence during an incident, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. It accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Only clean shots are billed: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP tools—take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf—work with Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

One GET request is enough:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for options such as full-page capture, CSS-selector elements, device presets, custom CSS and JavaScript, waits, request blocking, headers, cookies, geolocation, PDFs, caching, signed links, asynchronous webhooks, bulk capture, and the usage API. The same service supports PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF output.

For Python:

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

For Node.js:

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

ScreenshotNeo includes 1,000 screenshots per month free with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.

Cost, performance, and reliability notes

Free monitoring is constrained primarily by interval, monitor count, browser execution time, retention, and notification quotas. A five-minute check is suitable for basic availability but cannot provide one-minute detection. Browser checks consume more runtime and can fail because of UI changes, third-party scripts, or anti-bot controls, so reserve them for journeys that HTTP checks cannot validate.

Keep the monitored endpoints lightweight and deterministic. Return a clear status code, avoid mutating data in health checks, and expose enough logging to correlate a monitor alert with server events. For public incident communication, use the included status-page capability where available, but do not place private credentials or sensitive response data in a public page.

FAQ

Can I monitor a private web app for free?

Only if the monitoring system can reach it securely. Use an authenticated check with protected secrets, a private network integration, or a deliberately exposed health endpoint with strict controls; never publish credentials in a URL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How many checks should a small app have?

Start with the public URL, one meaningful content assertion, the most important API, one critical user journey, and certificate or domain checks. Add monitors when a distinct failure could affect users without changing the signal of an existing monitor.

Is a status page the same as monitoring?

No. Monitoring detects and alerts on failures; a status page communicates selected incident information to users or clients. You can operate one without the other, but they serve different audiences.

Should I monitor from more than one region?

Use multiple locations when geography, CDN routing, or regional availability matters. A single location can mistake a local network problem for a global outage.

The Bottom Line

A dependable free setup is layered: external HTTP first, keyword and API checks next, and browser transactions only for critical multi-step flows. Hosted monitoring is easiest; Uptime Kuma trades license fees for server operations. Keep at least one observer outside your app’s infrastructure, test alerts deliberately, and treat the documented five-minute free interval as a detection limit rather than continuous proof of uptime.
