To reason about a concurrent algorithm with TLA+, describe its relevant state and possible transitions, state the safety and progress properties it should satisfy, then check or prove those properties against the model. PlusCal can make the algorithm easier to write; TLC can explore a finite model and show counterexample traces; TLAPS can help prove properties. Each result applies to the specification and assumptions actually examined—not automatically to every implementation or deployment.

Why model a concurrent algorithm before implementing it?

Concurrent and distributed behavior depends on how events interleave. Two processes can take steps in different orders, messages can be delayed, and progress can depend on scheduling assumptions. A design that looks correct when read as a single sequence of instructions may fail under an allowed interleaving.

TLA+ gives you a way to describe that behavior mathematically. Leslie Lamport, creator of TLA+, describes it as “a language for modeling software above the code level and hardware above the circuit level.” In TLA+, a behavior is a sequence of states; an event is represented by a pair of consecutive states. A model deliberately captures the aspects of a system that matter for a particular question. It is not a complete physical description of the system.

Choose the right abstraction before writing the model

Start with the question you want to answer, not with a transcription of every line of code. A useful model leaves out details that cannot affect the property being checked and retains details that can. For example, if you are checking whether two processes can both enter a critical section, model their relevant control states and shared coordination variables. You may not need to model their unrelated logging or user interface.

Identify the system boundary and assumptions

  • Decide which components are in scope: processes, shared state, messages, or an external service.
  • Specify which events can change the state, including message sends, receives, retries, crashes, or recovery if they affect the question.
  • Make environmental assumptions explicit. Examples include whether messages may be delayed or lost and whether a process that is ready to run eventually gets a turn.
  • Choose finite sets and bounds when you plan to use TLC. A small model can expose a design flaw, but a bound is part of what was checked.

Represent state, initialization, and transitions

State variables describe the information needed to determine what the system can do next. The initial-state predicate, commonly named Init, defines allowed starting states. The next-state relation, commonly named Next, defines the allowed transitions. For a simple counter, the following schematic TLA+ specification allows it to start at zero and increase by one on each step:

VARIABLE x

Init == x = 0

Next == x' = x + 1

Spec == Init / [][Next]_x

Here, x' means the value of x in the next state. The bracketed action permits a step satisfying Next or a stuttering step in which the relevant state does not change. A concurrent model usually has several actions—for example, one for each process or message event—and Next combines the actions that may occur.

Write safety properties before progress properties

A property is useful only when it clearly states what the algorithm must guarantee. Separate safety from liveness because they ask different questions and rely on different assumptions.

Safety: can something bad happen?

A safety property says that every reachable state avoids an undesirable condition. For mutual exclusion, one possible invariant is that no more than one process is in the critical section. An invariant must hold initially and remain true after every allowed transition. In TLA+, it is commonly written as a state predicate and checked against the behavior specification.

Define the bad state precisely. “The algorithm is safe” is too broad to check; “at most one process has state critical” is a concrete claim if those states are part of the model. Then identify the variables and transitions on which the claim depends. A counterexample trace can show the exact sequence of choices that reaches a violating state.

Liveness: can something good eventually happen?

A liveness property describes progress, such as a request eventually being served. Unlike safety, progress may depend on fairness: an assumption about scheduling or whether an enabled action eventually occurs. Fairness is not an automatic feature of an algorithm. If the real environment does not provide the fairness condition in the model, the liveness conclusion may not apply.

State the progress goal and justify each fairness assumption in terms of the system being modeled. Lamport’s official PlusCal tutorial uses a message-passing example to show that liveness can require fairness—and that a seemingly reasonable fairness choice can still allow a counterexample. Treat a liveness failure as a prompt to examine both the algorithm and the assumptions, not simply to add stronger fairness until the checker passes.

Where PlusCal, TLA+, TLC, and TLAPS fit

These are complementary parts of a specification and verification workflow, not interchangeable tools. The official TLA+ tools documentation describes TLC as an explicit-state model checker for executable TLA+ specifications, able to check safety and liveness; it describes SANY as a parser and syntax checker.

Tool or notation Role Useful when
PlusCal An algorithm notation that translates into a TLA+ specification. You want to express concurrent or distributed steps in an algorithm-oriented form and inspect the translated model.
Direct TLA+ The underlying mathematical specification language for states, actions, and properties. You need more structure or want to express temporal properties beyond the algorithm notation.
TLC An explicit-state model checker that explores the states of an executable TLA+ specification. You want to check a finite model for safety or liveness violations and inspect a counterexample.
TLAPS A proof system for proving TLA+ theorems. You need a proof-based argument for a property rather than relying only on exploration of a finite state space.

The official PlusCal tutorial presents PlusCal as a language for writing and debugging algorithms, especially those implemented with multithreaded code. It translates into TLA+, which can be debugged mainly with TLC. The tutorial also notes that correctness can be proved with TLAPS, though doing so requires substantial effort and is seldom done. If you need finer control over the model or temporal properties not conveniently expressed in PlusCal, work directly in TLA+.

A practical model-checking workflow

  1. Write down the claim. State the safety invariant or liveness property in terms of the behavior that matters. Keep safety and progress claims separate.
  2. Define a small, explicit model. Declare the relevant variables, initial states, actions, and environmental assumptions. Use finite process sets or message domains when they are sufficient to expose the behavior under study.
  3. Choose PlusCal or direct TLA+. Use PlusCal if its algorithm notation suits the design; translate it to TLA+ and inspect what was generated. Write direct TLA+ when the model structure or temporal property calls for it.
  4. Check syntax, then run TLC. Use the current TLA+ tool documentation for installation and version-specific instructions. The official tools page notes that language and tool versions differ from those described in the older Specifying Systems book, so its historical instructions may not match a current distribution.
  5. Read the result as evidence about this model. If TLC reports a violation, inspect the counterexample trace: initial state, action sequence, and state where the property fails. Determine whether it reveals an algorithm defect, a missing case, an incorrect property, or an assumption that is too weak or misplaced.
  6. Revise and rerun. Change the algorithm model, property, or justified environment assumptions as appropriate, then repeat the check. Record the configuration and bounds so the scope of the result stays clear.
  7. Use proof techniques when exploration is not enough. For larger or more general arguments, establish how the detailed algorithm relates to a higher-level specification and prove the required obligations where feasible.

What a TLC result does—and does not—establish

TLC explores states of an executable specification under the configuration you give it. A successful run establishes that no checked violation was found in that model and configuration; it does not establish that every possible implementation, deployment, or unmodeled physical detail is correct. Finite bounds, omitted behavior, and environmental assumptions all shape what the checker can examine.

A proof result has its own scope. The official Byzantine Paxos example reports that TLC checked safety refinements and TLAPS checked safety proofs, while some liveness proof steps were not checked. That distinction is a useful standard for reading verification claims: ask which property was checked or proved, by which method, and which obligations remained outside that result.

Refinement and auxiliary variables for larger arguments

Refinement connects a more detailed algorithm description to a higher-level specification. It lets you reason about whether implementation-level steps preserve the behavior promised by the abstract design. The connection is not automatic: you must state the relationship and establish the relevant proof obligations.

Auxiliary variables can help make that relationship visible. The official TLA+ auxiliary-variable resource explains that they can be necessary to show that an algorithm description implements a higher-level specification, and provides examples with small TLC models. They support the reasoning; they do not substitute for defining what the implementation and specification are required to preserve.

How to judge whether your model is useful

  • The question is concrete: the property describes a behavior that matters to the design.
  • The state is purposeful: variables and transitions capture what can affect that property, while irrelevant implementation detail is left out.
  • Assumptions are visible: bounds, message behavior, failure behavior, and fairness conditions are stated rather than silently presumed.
  • Failures are actionable: a counterexample can be traced back to a scenario the design team can understand and address.
  • Claims match evidence: the report distinguishes what TLC explored, what a proof established, and what remains unmodeled or unproved.
