In a Minecraft Java Edition world using the 1.18 ore distribution, ordinary gold generates below Y=32 and is most strongly biased toward Y=-16. That is the best depth to start searching. It is a generation tendency, not a guarantee for every cave, chunk, or tunnel, so you still need to explore. Bedrock Edition and older or custom worlds may not follow these numbers, so check your setup before applying them.

Gold depth bands in 1.18 worlds

Mojang’s Java Edition 1.18 release notes, part of the Caves & Cliffs Part II update, describe three gold bands. Each one is a tendency rather than a fixed count.

Main band: below Y=32, strongest around Y=-16

Ordinary gold generates below height 32. Its strongest concentration is near Y=-16, so this is where most players should begin. Gold here is spread through stone rather than clustered in one place, which is why you usually have to search a wide area.

Deep gold: extra gold below Y=-48

The same release notes say extra gold generates below Y=-48. If you are already deep for other ores such as diamonds, this is a second chance to find gold without climbing back up.

Badlands: extra gold above Y=32

Badlands biomes get extra gold above Y=32. This is the one common exception to the main band, and it means a Badlands world can reward searching higher up than you would expect.

Why one depth is not enough

The 1.18 release notes state the principle directly: “There is no longer a single height level that is best for all ores – you need to make tradeoffs!” The line comes from the Java Edition 1.18 release notes, which do not name an individual speaker.

The same update reworked world height, cave generation, and ore distribution. Mojang’s overview says it can produce occasional large ore veins and new cave forms. Those caves can expose ore, but they can also contain flooded areas and aquifers. The overview does not establish that branch mining is always better or worse than exploring caves for gold, so the choice depends on your terrain and your tolerance for water and lava.

Choosing a search route

The routes below differ in what you can inspect, how much digging you must do, and how they handle caves, water, and lava. The official material does not rank them for gold efficiency, so treat this table as a decision aid rather than a verdict.

Step-by-step: finding gold in a 1.18+ Java world

  1. Confirm you are playing Java Edition 1.18 or later in a world that uses the 1.18 ore distribution. If the world was created earlier or uses custom generation, expect different results.
  2. Turn on the F3 debug screen to read your exact Y coordinate, which is shown in the coordinates line.
  3. Dig or descend to around Y=-16 for the main band. Move into Badlands above Y=32 if that biome is nearby. Go below Y=-48 if you are already deep.
  4. Choose a route from the table above. Tunnel only into known areas, and check walls before breaking into open space.
  5. Bring ordinary cave supplies: light sources, food, spare blocks for sealing, and a way to get out of water.

What gold ore drops

In the 1.17-era changes, gold ore stopped dropping its own block and now drops raw gold. You smelt raw gold in a furnace to get a gold ingot. This comes from the Java Edition 21w14a snapshot notes and the Bedrock Edition 1.17.0 release notes. Silk Touch still lets you collect gold ore blocks, and those blocks can still be smelted, according to the same snapshot and Bedrock notes.

This guide does not cover pickaxe requirements or Fortune yields. Check your edition’s current official help pages for those details.

Checks before you apply these numbers

  • Edition: The Y-level guidance here comes from Java Edition 1.18 release notes. Bedrock Edition’s ore layout for 1.18 and later is not covered by these sources.
  • Version: Newer Java releases may change ore generation again. Confirm against the notes for your version.
  • World type: Custom datapacks, world presets, or older worlds may not match the 1.18 baseline.
  • Coordinates: Read Y with the F3 debug screen before you dig, not by estimate.
