You can import WindTerm host configurations directly into VsTerm using File → Import from Others → WindTerm. Select a WindTerm .wind file or its profiles/ folder. Hosts and groups are imported, but encrypted passwords are not; plan to enter those again. VsTerm says private-key file paths are retained for public-key authentication, so verify that each referenced key is still accessible.

What transfers from WindTerm to VsTerm

VsTerm documents importing WindTerm data in either .wind format or from a profiles/ folder. Its README says host entries and groups are brought across, with groups handled to two folder levels. This is a host-configuration import, not a promise that every WindTerm preference, secret, tab layout, key-store entry, or saved workflow will be recreated.

  • Hosts and groups: documented as imported; group nesting is covered for two folder levels.
  • Encrypted passwords: not copied. Expect to enter passwords again when connecting.
  • Public-key authentication: the private-key file path is retained according to VsTerm documentation. The file itself must remain available at that path.

These behaviors are described in VsTerm’s project README. The documentation does not establish that the importer validates key-file permissions or transfers all other application settings.

Import your WindTerm sessions

  1. Open VsTerm and choose File → Import from Others → WindTerm.
  2. Select the WindTerm .wind data or the applicable profiles/ folder.
  3. When the import completes, inspect the host tree and groups. Check important hosts individually, especially entries nested beyond the documented two folder levels.
  4. Connect to a low-risk host first. Enter its password if prompted; encrypted WindTerm passwords are not imported.
  5. For a host using a key, confirm the retained path points to a key file available on the computer running VsTerm. Check that the file permissions and any passphrase setup work in that environment.

The permissions and connection checks are practical safeguards; they are not claims that VsTerm tests the key or validates a connection during import.

Check whether VsTerm fits your SSH workflow

Migration is only useful if the work you do after connecting still fits. The projects describe overlapping SSH and file-transfer capabilities, plus some workflow differences. These are vendor-documented features, not results of an independent head-to-head test.

SSH connections and session management

WindTerm’s project documentation lists SSH agent use, multiple authentication modes, proxy and jump support, port forwarding, and session features. If you rely on a particular authentication method, jump-host chain, forwarding rule, or session behavior, verify it against the current VsTerm build before moving your routine work. The feature list is in the WindTerm repository.

Shell and file transfers

WindTerm describes integrated SFTP/SCP file actions. VsTerm describes an SFTP pane within its SSH workflow, visible transfer progress, and ZMODEM support. If you routinely move files alongside shell work, confirm that the pane and transfer behavior cover your needs; the documentation does not establish that every WindTerm file-transfer action has a one-to-one equivalent. VsTerm’s documented workflow is in its project README.

Routine operations checks

VsTerm also describes operations panels for items such as routes, connection information, path tracing, system information, and host metrics. Treat these as documented interface features rather than independently validated monitoring results. Decide whether they are useful for your day-to-day checks, and verify the specific panels you depend on in the build you intend to use.

Review platform, licensing, and data considerations

Installation on your operating system

Check the current VsTerm build and installation instructions for your operating system. VsTerm’s README says its packages are not Microsoft- or Apple-notarized, so an operating-system security warning may appear during installation. Follow the project’s current guidance and your organization’s software policy rather than bypassing a warning without understanding it.

Commercial use and cloud sync

VsTerm documents Standard and Pro differences, optional cloud sync, and client-side encryption claims. It also says commercial or production use requires a commercial license. Review the current VsTerm terms and its security implementation before storing sensitive credentials or work data in the application. The existence of an encryption claim is not, by itself, an independent security assessment.

What to verify before retiring WindTerm

  • Every important host and group appears in VsTerm, including the group nesting you rely on.
  • Password-based hosts connect after you enter their credentials again.
  • Key-based hosts can read the referenced key files and complete any required passphrase flow.
  • Your required proxy, jump-host, authentication, and port-forwarding setups work in the target VsTerm build.
  • Your file-transfer tasks and routine operations checks work in the VsTerm workflow.
  • Any preferences, layouts, or saved workflows beyond imported hosts and groups have been recreated or are no longer needed.

The available project documentation describes the import route and feature sets, but it does not establish an independent migration success rate or current performance comparison.
