There are two different ways to “migrate” a Wix site: transfer its ownership to another Wix account, or rebuild it on a different platform and move its content and data. Wix supports the first. The second is not a direct export: Wix sites depend on Wix infrastructure, so moving to another platform means recreating the site and migrating content that the destination can accept.

Choose the right migration method

Start by deciding whether you want the site to remain on Wix. If only the owner or account is changing, use Wix’s site-transfer process. If you are leaving Wix, plan a rebuild on the destination platform rather than a simple download and upload.

Question Transfer to another Wix account Move to another platform
Where will the site run? On Wix, under a new account owner. On the destination platform after you recreate the site.
What happens to the design and functions? The site is transferred; review which subscriptions and associated services are eligible. Recreate the design and functionality on the new platform.
What happens to content and business data? Some site data transfers, but exceptions apply; a duplicate may omit business data and app settings. Move or re-enter content and records using the destination’s available tools.
How much rebuilding is needed? Usually less than a platform exit, though transfer eligibility and account-specific settings need attention. More: rebuild the site, migrate data, test it, and map changed URLs.

These routes solve different problems. For a move to another Wix owner, see Wix’s site-transfer instructions. For a platform exit, treat the work as a site rebuild and content migration.

How to transfer a Wix site to another account

Wix allows an owner to transfer a free or premium site to another Wix account. The available choices depend on the site and subscriptions attached to it; some premium subscriptions are not transferable. Review the choices in the transfer flow before confirming. Wix explains the process and its limitations in its transfer guidance.

  1. Inventory the site first. List its pages, media, contacts, store information, connected apps, and any other business data you rely on. A duplicate is not necessarily a complete backup: Wix warns that copies may omit contacts, orders, invoices, third-party app settings, and other business-related data.
  2. Start the ownership transfer from the site’s Wix account. Review whether the flow offers the site plan, domain, associated business email, or eligible premium apps. Do not assume every subscription can move.
  3. Choose what happens to your access. Depending on the transfer flow and site type, you may be able to retain a collaborator role or keep a copy. These options are distinct from transferring ownership.
  4. Confirm who will manage payments. Payment details do not transfer. The recipient is responsible for future payments on subscriptions that transfer.
  5. Have the recipient accept the invitation. Wix says transfer invitations expire after three days. Confirm acceptance and check the recipient account’s access and subscription details.

What transfers—and what needs a separate check

Wix’s transfer guidance says that site media stays associated with the site and contacts transfer to the new account. In a whole-site transfer, Wix Stores products, collections, and settings transfer as well. However, digital product display transfers without the digital files; Velo elements transfer except for Secrets Manager secrets; and email campaign statistics do not transfer with campaigns. Audit the items that matter to your business rather than assuming “everything” moves.

Free-site addresses can change

For a free site, the URL prefix is tied to the account. Transferring ownership can therefore change the site address even though the site itself moves. Wix says the recipient can change the prefix and site address in account settings, subject to availability. Check links that use the old address and update them where necessary; see Wix’s guidance on changing a free Wix URL.

How to move a Wix site to another platform

Wix says existing Wix sites cannot be hosted by another provider because they rely on Wix technology and services. The site itself is not an exportable package you can upload to a different host. Your content belongs to you, but a move to another platform requires rebuilding the site there and migrating or re-entering content and data through the routes available for each content type. See Wix’s explanation of site hosting and migration.

  1. Inventory content and functionality. Record the pages, blog posts, products, orders, customer data, bookings, members, forms, media, integrations, and Velo features the site uses. Note which information must be retained and how it is stored.
  2. Plan the rebuild on the destination platform. Recreate the design and the functions your visitors need. Work out how each content type will move: an import tool may exist for some records, while others may need manual re-entry or a separate export/import process.
  3. Move and verify data. Check that important records and media have arrived correctly. Test user journeys such as submitting a form, signing in, booking, or completing a purchase, as applicable.
  4. Prepare the domain and URLs. Keep the same domain where feasible, map each old URL to its destination, and decide which page paths can remain unchanged. A domain move alone does not move the Wix site to another platform.
  5. Launch only after testing the destination. Confirm the site, integrations, redirects, and key user flows before changing where the domain points. After launch, check for broken links and indexing problems.

Store-specific limits

Wix says a store cannot currently be transferred by itself from one Wix site to another. Its documented alternatives are exporting and importing the product list, duplicating a site, or transferring the entire site and store to another Wix account. A duplicate carries products and categories but not payment methods, shipping rules, or tax settings. Check Wix’s store-transfer feature-request page for current status, since this capability may change.

For a platform exit, store products are only one part of the migration. Plan separately for orders, customer records, payment configuration, shipping and tax rules, and any other store functions the destination must support. Do not assume that importing a product list recreates the operating store.

Protect URLs and search visibility

A rebuild can change page paths as well as the platform. Make a list of the current URLs and pair each with the closest relevant destination page. Preserve the old path where it still fits; where it changes, create a relevant 301 redirect from the old URL to the new one. Wix describes redirects as a way to send visitors from old links to new pages and help maintain search-ranking data, but they do not guarantee rankings will remain unchanged.

Wix’s documented redirect workflow requires an upgraded Wix site and a connected domain, and Wix says free Wix URLs cannot be redirected to a premium site. Those requirements apply to that Wix workflow, not necessarily to redirect tools on another platform. Consult Wix’s 301 redirect instructions if you need to configure redirects in Wix.

Redirects are only one part of SEO migration. Review page content, titles and other metadata, internal links, canonical settings, and technical behavior on the destination. After switching the domain, check that old URLs reach the intended pages and monitor the new site for broken links and indexing issues.

Should you transfer ownership or rebuild elsewhere?

Choose a Wix account transfer when the goal is to change who controls the site while keeping it on Wix. Choose a platform rebuild when the goal is to leave Wix and you are prepared to recreate the site and move its content and data. Before either route, make a site inventory and confirm what must be retained; for an external move, include URL mapping and redirect planning before launch.
