Measure both the space where the furniture will sit and the entire route it must travel to get there. Compare those measurements with the item’s listed width, depth, and height, then mark its footprint on the floor before you order. A piece can fit the room but still fail at a doorway, stair, or tight turn.
What to measure before choosing a piece
Start with the exact furniture item you are considering: use its current product listing for width, depth, and height. Measure the intended placement area, including the usable wall and floor space, rather than relying on the dimensions of a similar model. Check the surrounding layout as well as the empty footprint. Account for existing furniture and whether the proposed position would obstruct outlets, vents, switches, or thermostats. A product photo can help you picture the style, but it cannot establish how much room the piece will occupy in your home.

Use a tape measure to locate the planned position, then outline the full footprint on the floor with painter’s or masking tape. This makes the piece’s scale easier to assess against nearby furniture and walking space. For pieces with meaningful height, check the height against the room and nearby features, not just the floor area. Think about whether the furniture will sit comfortably in the space and leave access to the room’s fixtures.
Measure the whole delivery route
Walk the route from the building entrance to the intended room and measure every narrow point. The delivery path may include exterior or apartment doors, hallways, interior doorways, stairs, landings, turns, and an elevator. - Measure the usable opening at each doorway and elevator entrance, not only the nominal door size.
- Check hallway and stair width, landing space, ceiling height, and overhangs along the route.
- Note fixed obstacles that reduce clearance, such as door handles, handrails, lights, and radiators.
- Include elevator interior dimensions when applicable; an elevator entrance may be wide enough while the interior is not.
Check turns and delivery orientation
A doorway’s width alone does not prove that a large item can pass through it. The piece may need to be angled or turned in a hallway, on a stair, or at a landing. Compare the listed product dimensions with the actual openings and turning space along the route, considering how the furniture could be oriented at each bottleneck.

Do not assume a piece can be dismantled or that removable parts will solve a tight fit. If the route involves an uncertain turn or clearance, send the retailer your route measurements and the item’s product details and ask for guidance before ordering. Retailer advice may depend on the specific construction and delivery method.

A practical measuring sequence
- Choose the location. Measure the available floor and wall space, then note nearby furniture and fixtures.
- Record the item’s dimensions. Get the exact listing’s width, depth, and height as relevant to the piece.
- Mark the footprint. Outline the proposed placement with painter’s or masking tape, or map it on a floor plan.
- Walk and measure the route. Record each doorway, narrow hallway, stair, landing, turn, and elevator, including obstacles and overhead clearance.
- Compare and resolve uncertainties. Check both placement and delivery orientation against your measurements. Ask the retailer about a questionable bottleneck before buying.
- Check access after placement. Make sure the furniture will not block outlets, vents, switches, or thermostats.
What to do when measurements are close
Recheck the opening and product dimensions, making sure you are comparing usable clearance rather than an assumed opening. Look for obstacles or turning points that could make passage harder than the straight measurement suggests. If the fit still is not clear, provide the retailer with the product dimensions and measurements of the specific doorway, turn, stair, or elevator in question. There is no universal clearance number that guarantees every item will fit every route.
