To make sure a sofa and chairs work in your living room, measure both the room and the exact area where each piece will sit, map their footprints on the floor, and check that people can move around the layout. Then measure the entire delivery route separately—from the entrance to the room—including doorways, halls, stairs, turns, and elevators. A furniture layout can fit the room and still fail to fit through the route.
1. Measure the room and the usable placement area
Use a metal tape measure to record the room’s length and width. Sketch a simple floor plan and note which measurements go with which walls. The full room dimensions are only a starting point: measure the specific wall or zone planned for the sofa and chairs, since openings and fixtures can make part of a wall unusable.
Mark the location and approximate dimensions of:
- Doors, including the direction and space taken up by each door swing
- Windows and the space needed to reach or open them
- Fireplaces, radiators, vents, outlets, and built-ins
- Existing furniture that will remain in the room
- The main route people use to enter and cross the room

For each sofa and chair you are considering, write down the product’s published overall width, depth, and height. Use the listed dimensions rather than estimating from a product photo or seat count. For a sectional, include the full projection of the chaise or return; those parts affect both the footprint and nearby walking space.

Keep comfort dimensions separate from placement dimensions. Seat depth and seat height can help you judge how the furniture may suit the people using it, but overall width and depth determine its footprint. Height may also matter near windows, shelves, and other features. Retailer measurement guides, including Costco’s sofa guide, distinguish these kinds of measurements.
3. Map the sofa and chairs on the floor
Use painter’s or masking tape to mark each item’s actual width and depth on the floor in its intended position. Make a rectangle for a standard sofa, and extend the outline to include a chaise or sectional return. Tape the chairs and any nearby pieces that affect the arrangement, such as a coffee table.

Walk around the outlines as you would in daily use. Check whether doors can open, the route through the room remains workable, windows stay accessible, and people can get to the chairs and tables. This is a practical test of the planned layout, not a test of whether the furniture will fit through the delivery route. Pottery Barn recommends floor marking as part of its measuring advice, and Costco’s guide also emphasizes checking scale and circulation.

Retailer guides publish suggested furniture proportions and spacing examples, but they are rules of thumb—not a universal minimum or a building standard. The right arrangement depends on the room, furniture shape, household, and how people need to move through the space. Treat a published number as a starting point, then test the taped layout against your actual doors, pathways, and everyday use. 5. Measure the whole delivery route separately
Start with the entrance the delivery team will use and follow the route all the way to the intended room. At each restriction, check the clear opening—not just the nominal door or hallway size. Measure doorways and narrow passages, and include stairways, stair landings, and elevator doors and interiors when they are part of the route.
Look for anything that reduces usable clearance or complicates a turn, including door frames, banisters, low ceilings, lights, and other projections. Pottery Barn’s measuring and delivery guide calls for checking passageways, while CB2’s delivery guidance also draws attention to route dimensions and obstacles.

6. Compare the furniture with the tightest access points
Follow the manufacturer’s fit instructions for the specific sofa or chair. Depending on the item and the route, a retailer may ask you to compare doorway width with the furniture’s diagonal depth or to use another specified measurement. CB2 describes a method in which the sofa’s diagonal depth must be less than the doorway width; Pottery Barn provides separate guidance involving sofa width and diagonal depth, including an instruction for armless items.
Do not treat one diagonal measurement as proof that a large piece can make every turn. Compare the product’s stated measurements with each constrained opening and maneuvering space along the route. If a turn, stair, or other restriction makes the fit unclear, ask the retailer or delivery service to confirm the required measurements before ordering.

Tools to have on hand
- Metal tape measure: for the room, furniture, openings, and delivery route. CB2 specifically recommends a metal tape measure in its delivery guidance.
- Painter’s or masking tape: for marking full-size furniture footprints on the floor, as advised by Pottery Barn and Costco.
- Paper or a simple floor-plan tool: to keep room measurements, obstacles, and proposed positions together.
Measurement checklist before ordering
- Room length and width, plus the dimensions of the intended sofa and chair zones
- Doors, door swings, windows, fixtures, and furniture that constrain placement
- Published overall width, depth, and height for each candidate piece
- Full chaise or sectional projections, if applicable
- Seat depth and height, if relevant to comfort
- A taped floor layout that you have walked around
- Clear dimensions and obstacles along the complete delivery route
- The manufacturer’s fit method, checked against the route’s narrowest openings and turns
