To estimate your bra size at home, measure your underbust and the fullest part of your bust with a soft, flexible measuring tape, then use the size chart for the brand and sizing system you plan to buy. Treat the result as a starting point: the bra’s band, cups, straps and wires still need to feel right on your body.
What you need before measuring
- A soft, flexible measuring tape.
- A non-padded bra, following Wacoal America’s method, so padding does not affect the bust measurement.
- A mirror to check that the tape stays level around your body.
How to measure your bra size at home

Measure your underbust
Stand naturally and wrap the tape around your ribcage where the bra band sits. Keep it level all the way around and snug enough to stay in place, but do not pull it tight. Breathe normally, as Wacoal’s at-home calculator instructions advise. Record the measurement as it is rather than rounding it down.

Measure the fullest part of your bust
Place the tape around the fullest part of your bust. Keep it level and secure without compressing or flattening breast tissue. Wacoal’s calculator uses this overbust measurement together with the underbust measurement.

Use the right brand chart
Enter both measurements in the calculator or chart for the brand you are considering, and check which country’s sizing system it uses. The available US and UK guidance does not establish a universal conversion formula, so do not assume that a size label translates identically between systems, brands or styles. Breast Cancer Now explains that sizes can vary with brand, style and measuring approach in its guide to finding the right size.

If your overbust measurement is not greater than your underbust measurement, Wacoal America advises checking the measurements again. Treat that as a data-entry check for its calculator, not as a universal rule for resolving every measuring difficulty.
Check whether the bra fits comfortably
Try the bra on and assess how it feels while you move. Wacoal UK’s bra-fitting guide offers these practical fit clues:

- Band: It should sit horizontally across your back and feel firm but comfortable. If it rides up, try a smaller back size; if it feels painfully tight, try a larger one.
- Cups: They should enclose breast tissue without spill or discomfort. Spill can be a clue to try a larger cup; wrinkles or gaping can be a clue to try a smaller one. These signs do not prove that cup size alone is the cause.
- Straps: They should feel secure without digging in or slipping.
- Underwires: On a wired bra, they should sit against the ribcage below the breast tissue, with the centre lying flat against the breastbone. They should not dig in or sit away from the chest. If wires are uncomfortable, a non-wired style may be worth trying.
When two sizes or styles seem possible
Try each option and compare the parts that affect comfort and stability, not just the label. Check whether the band stays level, whether the cups contain tissue without spill or gaping, whether the straps stay comfortable, and—if the bra is wired—whether the wires sit correctly. Move around in each bra before deciding. A different style or brand may fit differently, and no single fitting formula or style works for everyone.

Repeat the measurements carefully and verify that you used the intended brand’s chart and sizing system. If the available sizes or styles still do not feel comfortable, a professional fitting service may help you explore other options. Measuring can help estimate a garment size, but it does not identify the cause of persistent breast pain.
