Use each search platform’s own AI report, then track analytics separately: Google Search Console shows impressions for AI Overviews and AI Mode, while Bing Webmaster Tools reports citations across supported Microsoft AI experiences. Neither is a universal count of citations across all AI search engines. Keep impressions, citations, referral visits, and conversions as distinct measures.

What counts as an AI search citation?

A citation is a link to a website shown in an AI-generated answer. A platform may report when a page is cited, while another reports impressions—an exposure measure that is not necessarily a citation count. A person can see a citation without clicking it, so referral traffic cannot reveal every time a site was cited.

There is no single first-party report that measures citations across all AI search engines. The tools below cover different products and use different metrics.

Which reports can measure AI visibility?

Source What it reports Useful context Limit to keep in mind
Google Search Console Generative AI performance report Impressions from Google AI Overviews and AI Mode Page, country, date, device, and text or multimodal search type Impressions are not a cross-engine citation total. The report may not appear for sites without enough generative AI impressions, and standard Search Console limits apply.
Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance Citations displayed in AI-generated answers, average cited pages per day, page-level citation counts, trends, and sampled grounding queries Cited URLs and query phrases; a newer preview may include intent, topic, Citation Share, and period comparison Coverage is Microsoft Copilot, AI-generated Bing summaries, and select partner integrations—not the whole AI-search ecosystem. Grounding queries are samples.
Microsoft Clarity Citation dashboard Citation activity, cited pages, topics, queries, share-of-authority view, and AI-driven traffic, according to Microsoft documentation Domain-level dashboard; verification can use Clarity tracking code or a connection to Search Console or Bing Webmaster Tools Microsoft says it does not measure traditional rankings, impressions, or click-through rate. Confirm current availability and coverage in the account.
Site analytics Observed referral sessions, time on site, and configured conversions Landing pages and business events configured by the site owner Measures visits and outcomes, not every citation or impression.

How to check Google AI impressions

  1. Open your verified property in Google Search Console and look for the Generative AI performance report.

  2. Review impressions by page and date. Use country and device dimensions to identify where visibility differs; the report can also distinguish text and multimodal search.

  3. Record the date range and selected dimensions with any export. Google says the report rollout reached websites worldwide on August 31, 2026, but a property may not show it if it has not received enough generative AI impressions.

  4. Interpret totals in light of the selected view: chart totals are aggregated by property, while table totals depend on the selected dimension. Search Console performance tables have a 1,000-row limit, so an export may not contain every row.

Google describes this as an impressions report for AI Overviews and AI Mode, not a count of citations across search engines. For Google’s guidance on how AI features relate to site eligibility, see AI features and your website.

How to check citations in Bing Webmaster Tools

  1. Verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools, then open the AI Performance report. Microsoft introduced the report in public preview in February 2026; availability and features can change.

  2. Record total citations, average cited pages per day, page-level counts, and trends for a fixed date window. Save the platform and date range alongside the results.

  3. Use the page list to see which URLs were cited. Treat grounding-query phrases as a sample of activity, not a complete query log.

  4. If the newer preview controls are available, inspect intent and topic groupings and compare equivalent periods. Microsoft describes these classifications as evolving; labels may be broad, especially for niche sites.

The supported coverage Microsoft states includes Copilot, AI-generated summaries in Bing, and select partner integrations. Details are in the Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance documentation and Microsoft’s February 10, 2026 public preview announcement.

How to interpret Citation Share and Clarity data

Microsoft’s June 2026 Bing Webmaster Tools preview adds Citation Share, defined as the percentage of citations attributed to a site out of all citations shown across sites for the same grounding query. Microsoft calls it observational—not traffic share, a quality score, a ranking system, or a competitive scoreboard. It is rolling out globally in preview, so confirm that it is available in your account. See Microsoft’s June 16, 2026 update.

Clarity’s Citation dashboard is another Microsoft reporting option. Its dashboard documentation describes citation and AI-driven-traffic views, and domain verification via its tracking code or a connection to Search Console or Bing Webmaster Tools. Its metrics should not be treated as traditional search rankings, impressions, or CTR.

Build a repeatable measurement routine

  1. Verify the site in Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools, then confirm which AI-specific reports are available. If using Clarity, check its documented verification options.

  2. Choose a fixed reporting window and keep platform, dates, country, device, and page scope with every export.

  3. Track Google impressions separately from Microsoft citation counts. Do not add them together or relabel one as the other.

  4. Keep page-level and time-series records so you can see which URLs changed and whether a shift persisted across comparable windows.

  5. Pair visibility data with analytics for referral sessions, time on site, and conversions. Treat those as downstream outcomes, not a full citation census.

  6. When a metric changes, note possible explanations—such as content edits, recrawling, model changes, freshness, partner coverage, or changing user demand—without claiming that one edit caused the result.
