Track AI-search affiliate performance as a chain, not a single number: Search Console shows Google Search exposure, GA4 shows identifiable arrivals and on-site affiliate-link clicks, and the affiliate network reports orders or commissions under its own attribution rules. These systems measure different stages, so an AI-referred session is useful evidence of a visit—not proof that AI search caused a later purchase.
What you can—and cannot—measure
Separate five stages in your reporting so each figure answers a clear question:
- Search visibility and clicks: Did your pages appear in Google Search, and how many clicks were recorded?
- Identified arrivals: Which visits reached your site with a recognizable source or campaign value?
- On-site engagement: What did those visitors do after arriving?
- Affiliate-link clicks: How often did visitors click your outbound merchant links?
- Affiliate outcomes: Did the network attribute orders or commissions to those clicks?
A referral or campaign value lets you count visits that Analytics can identify. It does not reveal every visit whose source information was lost, nor does it establish that AI search caused every subsequent click or purchase.

In Search Console’s Performance report, review impressions, clicks, queries, pages, and the Web search type to understand your Google Search baseline. Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode are included in overall Search Console search traffic under Web. That total is not an AI-feature-only click count, and the reviewed Google guidance does not establish a reliable way to separate an AI Overview or AI Mode click from a conventional Google result click in Analytics. Avoid labeling query-pattern estimates as observed AI-feature clicks. Google’s AI Features and Your Website guidance says sites in AI features are included in overall Search Console search traffic.

Identify incoming visits in GA4
Review acquisition and landing pages
Use GA4 Traffic acquisition and landing-page reporting to examine session source/medium, landing page, engagement, and key events. If a link or asset is under your control and may be shared or surfaced elsewhere, consistent campaign parameters can help identify resulting visits. For example, a publisher could use utm_source=perplexity&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=ai_research on a link it controls. This is a suggested naming convention, not a claim that an AI platform supplies or preserves those values. You cannot add UTM tags to links in third-party search results that you do not control. Google documents utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign, utm_term, and utm_content as manual traffic-source dimensions in its GA4 campaign-parameter documentation.
Keep session and event attribution distinct
Session-scoped acquisition dimensions describe the source associated with a session; event-scoped dimensions assign attribution credit to key events. Choose the scope that matches the question your report is intended to answer, and label it accordingly. A session source and an event-attribution result are not interchangeable. Measure outbound affiliate-link clicks
Record an event when a visitor clicks an affiliate link. Use a consistent event name and, where privacy requirements and platform policies allow, include useful context such as merchant, placement, article, and link identifier. This is an implementation choice rather than a universal schema prescribed by Google. GA4 can measure interactions and key events, but your team must decide which click details are useful. Google’s event documentation explains how events are used to measure interactions.
Then compare your site’s click events with the corresponding affiliate network’s outbound-click, order, and commission reports. Treat those as separate measurements: their totals can differ because of redirects, blocked scripts, duplicate clicks, consent choices, attribution windows, or the network’s own rules. Reporting fields and policies vary by network, so check the documentation for the specific program rather than assuming a standard.
Interpret missing or blended source data cautiously
GA4 can derive traffic-source information from campaign values or document-referrer information. Google describes direct traffic as sessions for which referral-source information is unavailable or configured to be ignored. Some AI-origin visits may therefore appear as direct or in another category rather than under an identifiable AI referrer. Report AI-identified sessions as a measured subset, not as a complete count of AI-influenced visits. See Google’s definition of direct traffic.
For Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Search Console provides the combined Web search reporting described above. The official sources cited here do not establish a reliable method for distinguishing those feature clicks from other Google Search clicks in Analytics. Do not infer an exact feature-specific total from queries or landing-page patterns.

Reconcile the systems before comparing results
Use Search Console as the source of truth for Google Search performance and Analytics as the source of truth for behavior on your site. Google warns that Search Console clicks and Analytics sessions are calculated differently: Search Console counts every Google Search click, while Analytics sessions follow their own rules. Exact totals are not expected to match; broad trends are more suitable for comparison. Google’s guide to using Search Console and Google Analytics data explains the distinction.

Check tag coverage, consent, attribution settings, canonical URLs, Search Console search type, and bot filtering before treating different totals as contradictory. Compare AI-identified visits with organic search or other referrals using the same landing-page cohort, period, device, and geography; assess volume, engagement, affiliate click rate, and network-reported value as separate measures.

Do not compare a Search Console click count directly with an affiliate-network order count as though they were the same funnel stage. Any visits or purchases influenced by an AI answer but lacking a captured source value belong in an “influence not directly observed” category, not in an observed AI-referral total.
