The right place to verify actual spend depends on how Claude Code is billed: API users should check Claude Console, Pro and Max subscribers should read their plan-usage indicators, and cloud-provider users should check their provider’s billing console.
Check token use for the current Claude Code session
- Open Claude Code in the session you want to measure.
- Enter
/usage. The Session block shows token counts by model, including input, output, cache-read, and cache-write tokens, plus session duration and an estimated cost. See Anthropic’s Claude Code cost guide for the current command details. - Read the figures in the context of your billing route. The token counts describe session activity; the dollar amount is not necessarily what you will be charged.
To check context use while diagnosing a large or growing session, Claude Code also documents the /context command in its CLI reference. Anthropic recommends managing context proactively and clearing between unrelated tasks when appropriate.
Where to verify cost depends on how you pay

Anthropic’s cost guide also describes organization-level reporting options, including OpenTelemetry export, Enterprise Analytics API reports, and Teams spend-report CSVs. Access depends on plan and deployment; check the current guide before relying on a particular reporting route.
Why the session cost is only an estimate
By default, Claude Code calculates the displayed cost locally from token counts using list prices. The figure can differ from a final charge because the applicable rates depend on the model, token category, account pricing, and deployment route. Anthropic states: “The figure is an estimate, so for authoritative billing see the Usage page in the Claude Console.” See the cost guide.

Input, output, cache-read, and cache-write tokens may be priced differently. For a current calculation, use Anthropic’s pricing page; check the applicable model and rate categories rather than relying on a static price list. Rates and model availability can change.
Organizations with negotiated rates can configure a managed modelPricing table so the CLI’s displayed estimate uses those rates. This changes the local reporting calculation, not the invoice itself; the setting needs updating if contract rates change.

Track usage over time without mixing sessions
/usage reports the active session. Running /clear starts a new session and resets its displayed totals, so successive session figures are not a continuous lifetime or billing-period total. If you are comparing tasks or compiling a period total, record where each session ends and the next begins.
A status line can display usage continuously, according to Anthropic’s cost guide. For organization-wide monitoring, the guide also describes near-real-time per-user token and cost metrics through OpenTelemetry, subject to plan and deployment availability.

What can change the token mix
- Context size and reuse: long or reused context can affect the number and categories of tokens reported.
- Tool activity: work involving tools can change session token volume.
- Prompt caching: cached reads and writes are reported separately and can have different prices from other token categories.
For more precise cost tracking, compare sessions with similar tasks and context, note any resets, and use the billing surface for your account type.
