To measure offline campaign ROI, define the business result and full campaign cost before launch, build a way to connect responses to sales or other outcomes, and report attributed results separately from outcomes proven to be incremental. A QR scan, phone call, or coupon redemption shows a response; it does not by itself show that the campaign caused a sale.

Start with the result the campaign is meant to produce

Choose one primary outcome before creating or distributing campaign material. It might be revenue, qualified opportunities, registrations, store visits, donations, or another result that matters to the business. Define precisely what counts—for example, a qualified opportunity rather than any inquiry—and decide what business decision the measurement will inform. Delivery figures such as mail pieces sent, radio spots aired, or impressions can help diagnose execution, but they are not substitutes for the chosen business outcome. The American Advertising and Marketing Association’s measurement framework emphasizes deciding what to measure and what decision the result should change.

Choose the right calculation

Marketing ROI = (Marketing Return − Marketing Investment) ÷ Marketing Investment × 100

#1 Best Overall
Egoldto Height Measurement for Wall, Children Adult Height Measure Rod, 3D Removable Growth Chart Stick, Wall Mounted Splicing Ruler for Kids Baby Nursery 79 inch (Blue)
  • Very accurate -There are inches and centimetres measurement. It's very precise. The scale is very clear to read.
  • Innovative design -The height ruler is a 3D sliding design that allows you to measure yourself with one hand just by standing up straight, with almost no data error.
  • Save space -Demountable design, easy to take, 79inches, 7 section ruler can be joined. When you stick them on the wall, it never affect your wall design decoration.
  • Safe material -Premium ABS materials, water proof, stain proof and scratch proof, durable and colorfast. Suitable for children, nursery, adults, etc
  • Idea Choice for Birthday, Christmas and Thanksgiving Day. All of them are well tested before shipped to ensure qualified standard.

Specify what counts as marketing return and what belongs in the campaign investment. Depending on the decision, investment may include more than media placement: account for relevant creative, production, printing, postage, event, staffing, and measurement costs consistently. Use the same cost boundary when comparing campaigns.

Keep return-on-ad-spend (ROAS) distinct from ROI:

ROAS = Attributed Advertising Revenue ÷ Advertising Cost

ROAS is a revenue-to-ad-cost ratio; it does not subtract costs or prove that advertising caused the revenue. Label revenue credited by an attribution method as attributed revenue, not causal return. For a causal estimate, compare outcomes with a credible estimate of what would have happened without the campaign.

Build response tracking before the campaign goes out

Choose a response path that fits the channel and audience, and assign campaign identifiers while the creative and systems can still be changed. A code on a mailer is useful only if staff or systems capture it; a QR code is useful only if its destination and downstream events are measured.

Method What it can capture What it can miss or require
Campaign URL or landing page Visits that use the printed address and, with appropriate analytics, actions on the page. Some people may type the main website address instead of the campaign URL.
QR code Scans and resulting website sessions or actions, if the destination and analytics are configured. A scan is an interaction, not automatically a conversion. Define and track the downstream event.
Tracked phone number Calls originating through the campaign number. Staff need a consistent way to handle and log calls and their outcomes.
Offer or source code Responses or purchases where the code is entered or redeemed. Missed code entry leads to undercounting.
Reply device Completed physical replies, such as a returned card. It may miss people who respond by phone, online, or through another route.
Customer matchback Transactions that can be matched to campaign recipients using approved identifiers. Results depend on data quality, coverage, timing, and permitted use. Shared households or organizations can complicate matches.

For each response method, record the campaign ID, source, and destination or offer in a consistent format. A campaign-specific QR code or printed QR label can make a physical mail piece, sign, or event handout easier to connect to its landing page. It is an implementation aid, not an ROI measurement system on its own.

Connect responses to outcomes and set the observation window

Map where each measure comes from: response platform, website analytics, call system, CRM, point-of-sale system, customer database, or finance system. Preserve the campaign identifier as a record moves from first response through qualification, sale, and revenue. Document who owns each data source, how often it refreshes, how records are matched, and where campaign IDs may be missing. Systems can disagree, and identifiers can be lost as information passes between them.

Define the primary conversion separately from supporting interactions. A scan, call, form submission, appointment, redemption, and purchase are different events; decide which one is the campaign’s main outcome and which are diagnostic steps along the way. Set a fixed observation window before launch and use it for comparisons. Direct-mail responses may arrive days or weeks after delivery, while seasonal or renewal campaigns can take longer. Do not extend the window only after seeing results.

Separate attributed results from incremental impact

Attribution assigns credit to observed touchpoints according to a model and its time windows. It can help describe how tracked responses and purchases connect, but it cannot establish that a campaign caused a conversion: a customer might have bought anyway, and several channels may have influenced the purchase.

Incrementality asks how many outcomes happened because of the campaign that would not otherwise have happened. Google Ads Help defines incremental conversions as treatment conversions minus control conversions, and incremental ROAS as incremental conversion value divided by total ad spend. Those are definitions for lift measurement, not a generic benchmark for offline campaigns.

The W3C technical report states: “To better measure the causal effect of advertising, the use of (randomized) control trials—or, in industry terms, incrementality—is necessary.” The practical implication is to use a credible counterfactual when the budget decision and available volume justify it.

Approach How it helps Key consideration
Randomized holdout Compares outcomes for randomly selected campaign-exposed and holdout groups. Requires a feasible way to withhold exposure and enough volume to distinguish lift from noise.
Geographic experiment or matched markets Compares areas receiving different campaign treatment, or a treated area with a comparable market. Markets need to be sufficiently comparable; differences in local conditions can bias results.
Platform lift study Uses a platform’s study design to estimate lift in outcomes it can observe. Check which outcomes and exposure paths the study captures; platform results may not cover every offline or delayed sale.
Model-based or econometric estimate Uses modeled counterfactuals, econometric methods, or hybrid proxies when direct randomization is impractical. These are modeled estimates, not randomized experimental results. Examine assumptions, bias controls, and how signal is separated from noise.

Choose a method based on the credibility of its counterfactual, whether people or geographies can be randomized or matched, sample size and noise, cost and operational disruption, ability to capture delayed outcomes and channel overlap, and whether the result informs one campaign or longer-term budget allocation. IAB guidance describes experiments, model-based counterfactuals, econometric models, and hybrid proxies; the method and its limitations should be named in the report.

Report results with scope and uncertainty

A useful campaign report distinguishes execution, optimization, business outcomes, and causal evidence rather than treating all metrics as equally mature. A broken response path may need prompt correction; revenue quality, retention, and incrementality take longer to assess.

  • Delivery checks: Confirm that materials or placements ran as intended and that URLs, codes, numbers, and forms work.
  • Optimization review: Review response and intermediate conversion signals while the campaign is active, without mistaking them for final business impact.
  • Outcome review: Measure the preselected conversion within the agreed observation window and connect it to revenue or another defined value where possible.
  • Post-campaign analysis: Report the attribution method, source of truth, window, exclusions, match rate, and any experimental design. Identify missing data, overlapping channels, delayed outcomes, and cross-device paths that may be missed or modeled.

No defensible typical offline ROI, response-rate, or channel-lift benchmark is established by the cited material. Prefer a comparable prior campaign measured with the same audience rules, cost boundary, and observation window. Present tracking as evidence with a defined scope, not perfect person-level truth.
