Measure a Super Bowl campaign’s financial ROI by estimating the incremental contribution profit it caused, subtracting the campaign’s full cost, and dividing by that cost. Compare results with a credible estimate of what would have happened without the campaign. Report brand lift and attention measures separately: recall, views, search activity, and attributed conversions can help explain performance, but they are not profit.
What does Super Bowl ad ROI mean?
For a financial assessment, use this accounting framework:
Financial ROI = (incremental contribution profit attributable to the campaign − total campaign investment) ÷ total campaign investment

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Contribution profit is the incremental sales value after the variable costs and margin assumptions your business chooses to include. Use actual company economics, not gross revenue as a stand-in for profit. This formula is a practical framework, not a universal formula prescribed by a measurement provider; document the margin basis and cost boundary you use.
#1 Best Overall
Keep these measures distinct:
- Financial ROI is the net return relative to campaign investment, using incremental contribution profit.
- Incremental revenue per dollar is incremental revenue divided by campaign spend. If you report it, label it as a revenue measure, not profit ROI.
- Attributed conversions or sales are outcomes credited to the campaign by an attribution method. Attribution can describe conversion paths, but credit assigned by a model does not, by itself, show that the campaign caused those outcomes.
For example, if an advertiser estimates $1.5 million in incremental contribution profit and counts $1 million in total campaign investment, the framework gives a 50% ROI: ($1.5 million − $1 million) ÷ $1 million. This is illustrative arithmetic, not a Super Bowl benchmark or a prediction.
How to measure it, step by step
- Define the outcome and scope before the ad airs. Specify the business result you are measuring, the target audience and geography, the baseline period, and the post-campaign measurement window. Decide whether the subject is the broadcast spot alone or the wider campaign that supports it.
- Choose a counterfactual. Estimate what would likely have happened without the campaign. A randomized holdout can be useful when feasible; otherwise, choose a credible comparison design and state its assumptions. Google’s 2020 guidance distinguishes routine attribution from randomized experiments used to estimate lift. Work by Fan, Hesterberg, Liu, and Zhang on online-ad brand-lift measurement discusses complications including survey-response bias and treatment/control design.
- Measure incremental purchases and sales. Where possible, connect exposure to online and offline purchase data, then estimate sales above the counterfactual. Nielsen describes sales-lift measurement that links media exposure with purchase data. The estimate should reflect the design and data actually available, not merely conversions that an attribution system assigns to the ad.
- Convert incremental sales into contribution profit. Apply the advertiser’s stated margin and variable-cost assumptions to incremental sales. Keep the calculation consistent with the costs included in the campaign investment.
- Count the full investment you intend to evaluate. Set a clear boundary covering the relevant media, production, distribution, and follow-up activity. If you report a spot-only calculation as well as a campaign-wide one, identify them as separate scopes rather than mixing one scope’s sales with another scope’s costs.
- Measure brand outcomes separately. Track outcomes such as awareness, recall, consideration, favorability, or purchase intent using an exposed-versus-control survey design where possible. Google Display & Video 360’s Brand Lift guidance describes comparing positive survey responses among exposed and withheld groups and notes that smaller lifts generally require more responses to detect. Report the sample and response sufficiency alongside the result.
- Include activity before and after the game. Consider teasers, broadcast exposure, social and earned activity, post-game viewing, and follow-up media when they are part of the campaign being evaluated. Nielsen’s 2016 integrated Super Bowl measurement description combined social tracking, a TV Brand Effect panel, and an online consumer panel to examine paid and earned effects, recall, viewing behavior, and brand equity.
- Report the method and its limits. State the measurement window, cost boundary, incrementality method, margin basis, and whether the reported effects are short-term or longer-term. Show important assumptions and sensitivity to them instead of presenting one estimate as exact.
Which signals belong in a financial ROI calculation?
Separate the business outcome from the signals that may explain how people responded. Nielsen cautions that remembering an ad is not the same as acting on it. Search lift, social engagement, earned-media activity, video views, and recall can indicate attention or movement through the funnel; they should not be described as incremental profit unless they are connected to a causal financial outcome.

| Measure | What it can tell you | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Incremental contribution profit | Estimated financial value above the counterfactual, after the stated variable costs | Use in the financial ROI calculation, with the margin and campaign-cost boundaries disclosed. |
| Incremental revenue or sales lift | Estimated additional sales above the comparison outcome | Report as revenue or sales lift; convert to contribution using the advertiser’s assumptions before calculating financial ROI. |
| Attributed conversions | Conversions credited to campaign touchpoints by an attribution method | Use to understand paths and assist optimization, not as proof of causal lift on its own. |
| Awareness, recall, consideration, favorability, or intent | Survey-based brand responses among exposed and comparison groups | Report as brand measures with the survey design and response sufficiency; do not equate them with profit. |
| Search, social, earned media, and views | Attention, conversation, or potential movement through the funnel | Use as supporting indicators, not substitutes for an incremental financial outcome. |
What published Super Bowl studies can—and cannot—tell you
Published results provide context for specific campaigns and study designs; they do not establish a universal ROI benchmark. Keep the metric, publisher, year, and comparison attached to each figure.
| Published finding | Source and context | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| 80% higher ad recall | Nielsen Ad Intel, as reported by Nielsen in 2022, for a major food and beverage company’s Super Bowl ad compared with the brand’s other TV investments. | An example for one company and comparison, not an expected result for every advertiser. |
| More than 20 times as effective at driving brand perceptions | Kantar’s summary of Super Bowl 2023 ads, compared with typical TV ads on this measure. | A Kantar-reported study comparison; it is not a guaranteed brand or financial effect. |
| Three times the ROI and 40% higher ad recall for “Strong” versus “Average” ads | Kantar’s Super Bowl 2023 comparison between its creative-effectiveness groupings. | This is a comparison between those groupings, not a general causal forecast for a new campaign. |
| Comparable brand lift from 15-second and 30-second formats, with differences by platform and measure | Kantar’s study ran December 19, 2025–January 8, 2026, using a top-performing Ritz 2025 Super Bowl creative across linear TV, Prime Video, YouTube, and Instagram. Kantar also reported 1.4× higher active attention for the 30-second cut in Amazon’s NFL environment. | The result is specific to that creative, study period, platforms, and measures. It does not establish that shorter or longer edits perform the same way for other ads or placements. |
These studies can help frame questions about creative quality, brand response, and format. They do not replace a campaign-specific estimate built around the advertiser’s own outcome, costs, audience, and counterfactual.

How to compare a Super Bowl campaign with other media
Use the same outcome definition and cost boundary for every option. A comparison is difficult to interpret if one channel is judged on attributed revenue, another on profit, or the Super Bowl campaign includes production and follow-up costs that are omitted elsewhere.
- Total cost: include the media and associated campaign activity that belongs to each option.
- Audience and platform: document who could be reached and where the campaign ran.
- Creative and brand lift: compare measured brand outcomes using comparable survey designs when possible.
- Incremental sales or contribution: prefer estimates based on a credible counterfactual over raw attributed totals.
- Duration: define the measurement window and distinguish immediate outcomes from longer-term effects.
- Strength of evidence: describe whether the result comes from a randomized holdout, another comparison design, attribution, or survey measurement.
When comparing 15- and 30-second edits, judge them by platform and the specific outcome under consideration. Kantar’s 2026 study reported differences across platforms and measures, so its results should not be generalized into a universal rule about ad length.
