Measure hydrogen evolution from an organic photocatalyst by documenting the catalyst and sacrificial-reagent system, calibrating the light that reaches the sample, quantifying hydrogen with a validated method, and reporting the raw output alongside a clearly defined rate. Treat hydrogen evolution rate (HER), apparent quantum yield (AQY), and solar-to-hydrogen (STH) efficiency as different metrics, not interchangeable scores. If the reaction consumes an organic donor, describe it as sacrificial hydrogen evolution or photocatalytic organic reforming—not overall water splitting.
First define what reaction you are measuring
Organic photocatalyst experiments can use molecular photosensitizers, metal-free dyes, polymers, or organic–inorganic hybrid systems. Record the complete working system: photosensitizer or photocatalyst, any semiconductor support, cocatalyst, sacrificial organic reagent, solvent, and reactor configuration. These components and their conditions affect what the measured hydrogen output means.
Sacrificial hydrogen evolution is not overall water splitting
When an organic donor is consumed during illumination, the system can produce hydrogen while oxidizing that donor. This is photocatalytic organic reforming or sacrificial hydrogen evolution. It does not, by itself, demonstrate that water has been split into hydrogen and oxygen. The 2026 review of photocatalytic reforming treats hydrogen production from organic solutions as complementary to water splitting.
Recommended Free Tools
State whether the donor is sacrificial and identify it and the relevant reaction context. Call a result overall water splitting only when the experiment demonstrates the overall reaction and accounts for the corresponding products; hydrogen detection alone is not enough.

Set up a reproducible illumination measurement
Describe the light reaching the sample rather than just naming the lamp or simulator. A 2021 perspective on testing particulate photocatalysts identifies light-source calibration as an area where errors and inconsistent practices arise.
- Source and spectrum: identify the light source and its spectral range or spectrum.
- Intensity at the sample: report calibrated irradiance or photon flux at the sample position, and how it was measured.
- Geometry: give the illuminated area, source-to-sample arrangement, reactor optical path or other relevant geometry, and sample position.
- Exposure: report illumination duration and any light or dark intervals.
- Wavelength-dependent tests: state the wavelength or band used and the photon basis for the calculation.
Calibration and geometry matter because the incident light determines the basis for photon- and solar-energy-efficiency metrics. A nominal lamp rating alone does not establish the irradiance or photon flux at the reaction sample.

Quantify hydrogen and preserve the measurement basis
Use a validated analytical method appropriate to the reactor and report enough information to interpret its result: the calibration basis, sampling procedure, and measurement time window. The 2021 testing-protocol perspective highlights reliable HER and STH reporting, but the available source description does not establish a single required instrument or provide an instrument-level procedure. Do not present any one technique as mandated on that basis.
Where possible, report the measured hydrogen amount at each time point or the time-resolved production record, not only a final calculated rate. Include the reactor and reaction conditions, sampling basis, and catalyst amount so another reader can understand how the reported output was obtained.

- 1. Electrical part: motor with wind shoulder, ammeter, voltmeter.
- 2. Ammonia fuel cell.Hydrogen's electrons travel from the anode to the cathode through an external circuit, generating an electric current. At the cathode, the electrons, protons, and oxygen in the air combine to produce water, which is the main by-product of the fuel cell.
- 3. PEM (proton exchange) water electrolyzer.Gaseous hydrogen is sent to the anode of the membrane, and air is sent to the cathode. The hydrogen atoms are stripped of electrons on the anode side, and the positively charged protons pass through the membrane to reach the cathode. In order for this reaction to occur, a platinum catalyst must be used.
- 4. The two proton exchange membrane electrodes in the organic base and the presenter are 35mm*35mm. Experimental steps. Add deionized water to the water level in the PEM water electrolyzer. The amount of water should not be too much to prevent water from flowing into the battery. After adding water, connect the hydrogen gas outlet on the water electrolyzer to the hydrogen gas inlet on the electrical energy with a gas pipe.
- 5.Then connect the 6V-12V DC power supply to the positive and negative wiring of the water electrolyzer part, and connect the transportation line of the electrical part to the electric energy after 2-3 minutes, the small motor starts to work, and the current is displayed on the current and voltmeter. Positive value.
Report HER with its denominator and conditions
HER describes hydrogen production activity over a stated time interval. It is often normalized to catalyst amount, but a mass-normalized value is not a universal ranking: the 2026 reporting perspective warns that it can change strongly with experimental conditions. Give the raw hydrogen amount as well as the normalized rate, and name the denominator explicitly—for example, the catalyst mass used in the calculation.
Report the conditions that give the rate meaning, including catalyst loading, donor identity and concentration, solvent, reactor details, illumination, temperature if controlled, and test duration. Do not compare rates as if they were directly equivalent unless the light, catalyst loading, reactor geometry, reaction mixture, hydrogen quantification, time window, and normalization basis are sufficiently aligned.

Choose AQY or STH only when the test supports it
| Metric | What it relates | What to state | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|---|
| HER | Hydrogen amount produced over time, sometimes normalized to catalyst amount | Hydrogen amount, time interval, denominator, catalyst amount, reaction conditions, reactor and illumination basis | An activity measure; not a universal ranking when test conditions differ |
| AQY | Hydrogen molecules produced relative to incident photons | Wavelength or band, incident-photon basis, hydrogen measurement basis, and test conditions | A photon-based metric for the stated illumination basis; it is not the same as solar-energy conversion |
| STH efficiency | Chemical energy in generated hydrogen relative to incident solar energy | Solar illumination and calibration basis, hydrogen measurement, and system boundary used for the efficiency claim | An energy-conversion metric; it requires a defensible solar-energy input and system boundary |
AQY and STH answer different questions. Use AQY for a stated wavelength or band and photon basis. Use STH for a solar-energy conversion claim only when the illumination and system boundary support it. The 2021 protocol perspective specifically flags STH reporting as a source of methodological inconsistency; the 2026 reforming review distinguishes AQY from STH.

Its stated scope is solar photocatalytic water splitting. Do not assume it prescribes a method for every organic sacrificial-reagent reforming experiment; verify the full text and its applicability to the specific system before claiming compliance.
Minimum reporting checklist
- Identify the organic photocatalyst or photosensitizer, supports or hybrid components, cocatalyst, donor, solvent, and reactor.
- State whether the process is sacrificial organic reforming or demonstrated overall water splitting.
- Describe the light spectrum, calibrated irradiance or photon flux at the sample, illuminated area, geometry, and duration.
- Explain the hydrogen quantification, calibration, sampling basis, and time window.
- Provide raw or time-resolved hydrogen output, catalyst amount, and normalized HER with its denominator.
- Give reaction conditions and reactor details needed to interpret or reproduce the rate.
- For AQY, specify wavelength or band and incident-photon basis; for STH, specify the solar input and system boundary.
- Report stability and whether the donor is sacrificial when these are part of the claim.
These reporting points bring together the concerns identified in the 2021 testing-protocol perspective, the 2026 perspective on comparable sacrificial hydrogen-evolution reporting, and the 2026 reviews of organic photosensitizers and photocatalytic reforming. The 2026 perspective describes a proposed minimal reporting set, but its complete checklist is not reproduced here.
