To check noise around your home, measure at the place and time that matter, record the measurement duration and the meter’s average and peak readings, then repeat under comparable conditions. A sound-level meter or a suitable phone app can help you spot patterns, but a phone reading is not automatically a formal survey, a health-risk determination, or proof of a legal violation.

Choose the question and the place before measuring

First decide what you need to find out: whether a particular event is unusually loud, whether a source recurs at night, or what the general sound level is in a room or outdoor area. Measure where the noise affects you—for example, at a usual listening position indoors or at a relevant point outside—rather than moving around between readings.

For each observation, note the location, date and time, how long you measured, what was happening, and any unusual conditions. That context makes repeated readings more useful: a value during passing traffic cannot be fairly compared with one taken during a quiet period.

Choose a meter or app that fits the purpose

A sound-level meter is a dedicated physical instrument. A phone app is convenient for an initial check or for comparing recurring conditions, but readings can vary with the phone’s microphone, the device, the app, and the measurement conditions. Do not assume that one app’s validation applies to every phone or app.

CDC/NIOSH’s Sound Level Meter App is for iOS. NIOSH says it cannot currently verify Android app accuracy across the fragmented device marketplace. The app’s stated accuracy of ±2 dBA comes from laboratory testing; NIOSH specifies that Type 2 requirements are met with a calibrated external microphone. This is an app-specific laboratory claim, not a guarantee for every phone or home measurement.

NIOSH says its app is not intended to replace professional sound-level meters or dosimeters or to be used for compliance. If you need defensible documentation, a source diagnosis, or a formal assessment, contact a qualified acoustics or noise professional or the responsible local authority.

Take repeatable readings

  1. Set up at the relevant listening position. Keep the microphone unobstructed and use the same position for comparable observations. For its app’s intended use, NIOSH’s guide describes holding the phone roughly 10–12 inches from the hearing zone. This is app-specific guidance, not a universal protocol for residential surveys. See the NIOSH guide to interpreting app readouts.
  2. Measure for a defined interval. Record the start and end time or total duration. A short reading describes that interval; it does not, by itself, represent a whole night or longer exposure.
  3. Record the metric, not just a number. When available, note the equivalent or average level over the interval, as well as maximum and peak values. NIOSH’s app includes metrics such as LAeq, maximum, peak, time-weighted average, and dose. These metrics answer different questions: a brief peak can be high even when the interval’s average is lower.
  4. Repeat under comparable conditions. Keep the location and setup consistent, and note events such as a vehicle passing, a door closing, or equipment starting. Repetition can help reveal a pattern, but it does not turn an uncalibrated phone reading into an official survey.

A simple log can include: date and time; indoor or outdoor location; duration; meter or phone/app used; weighting, if shown; average, maximum, and peak values, if available; and what was happening during the measurement.

Understand what the decibel number means

Decibels use a logarithmic scale, so a change in dB is not a simple percentage change in sound. NIDCD explains that a 10 dB increase corresponds to ten times the sound intensity and is perceived as about twice as loud. A-weighted decibels, written dBA, adjust measurements approximately for the way human hearing responds to different frequencies; many health-related noise figures use dBA. See NIDCD’s explanation of how sound is measured.

  • 【Widely Used】The noise meter is the use of environmental sound level instrument, can be widely used in such as factories, workshops, schools, residential, office areas, traffic roads, audio and other occasions of sound level measurement. Also suitable for noise engineering, product quality control, health, prevention and control.
  • 【Accurate Measurement】Measuring Range:30~130dB ;Accuracy:±1.5dB(94dB@1KHz);Display Resolution:0.1dB
  • 【A Weighted Measurement】 A Weighted network (automatic switching range display)
  • 【Fast/Slow mode selection】Press the MODE key, you can convert the response speed of the noise meter, FAST fast, SLOW slow
  • 【MAX/MIN Measurement】Press RANGE key to measure the maximum value of MAX and minimum value of MIN.A maximum duration of more than 3 seconds is recorded, with a normal test sampling rate of 0.5 seconds. The maximum error is ± 5%.

Always read a value together with its metric and duration. A spot level at one moment is not the same as an average exposure over time. For example, NIOSH’s recommended occupational exposure limit of 85 dBA is an eight-hour time-weighted average, not a residential threshold and not a rule that a single home reading at 85 dBA proves injury or a violation. NIOSH discusses the distinction between occupational and general environmental limits in its 2016 overview of noise exposure limits.

Do not confuse hearing guidance, annoyance guidance, and local law

Different noise figures serve different purposes. The World Health Organization says levels below 80 dB are unlikely to cause hearing damage. That is general hearing-safety guidance; it is not a guarantee of comfort, a quiet-home target, or a residential noise ordinance. See WHO’s safe-listening guidance.

NIOSH’s 2016 overview reports historical U.S. EPA guidance values of 55 dBA outdoors and 45 dBA indoors for speech interference and annoyance. Those figures are historical guidance cited in a discussion of differing noise limits; they should not be treated as current, universally applicable, enforceable residential limits.

For a landlord, neighbor, construction, or municipal complaint, identify the relevant jurisdiction and check its current rule and required measurement procedure. There is no single residential limit or enforcement protocol that can be inferred from a consumer app reading. A local authority can explain what evidence it accepts and whether a specific instrument, location, or measurement period is required.

Decide what to do with a persistent reading

  • For personal awareness: Keep a consistent log and compare recurring observations using the same location, duration, and metrics.
  • For possible hearing exposure: Reduce exposure where practical and use relevant health guidance. NIOSH’s occupational advice relates level to duration; its discussion recommends precautions when readings are at or above 85 dBA, but that benchmark is not a home-noise law.
  • For a complaint or formal record: Ask the responsible local authority about the applicable rule and measurement protocol, or hire a qualified noise professional if a defensible assessment is needed.
