Use Search Console’s Discover Performance report to measure impressions, clicks and average click-through rate (CTR) for Discover traffic. Open the report, select complete dates, segment by page, country and appearance type, then account for thresholds, canonical URLs, preliminary data and time-zone differences before comparing periods or analytics sessions.
What the Discover Performance report measures
Search Console reports Discover activity for eligible properties and content. Google’s reporting window covers the most recent 16 months, and the report is available only when a property has accumulated enough Discover impressions. Google does not publish one universal numeric threshold, so a new or low-volume site may have no report even when individual users have seen its content. See Google’s Search Console performance overview and the Discover Performance report documentation.
Discover is interest-based rather than driven by a submitted keyword query. Eligibility therefore does not guarantee placement: Google says that “being eligible to appear in Discover is not a guarantee of appearing.” Traffic can change when user interests, content formats, Search systems or the Discover product change, and Google notes that a change may be unrelated to content quality or publishing frequency.

That distinction should shape your measurement question. Search Console can tell you whether Google reported more Discover exposure or more Discover clicks for a selected property, page or market. It cannot tell you how many people read to the end, subscribed, bought something or remembered the brand. Those downstream questions require your analytics or business systems, with the definitions and limitations kept separate.

Open the report and check whether data should exist
- Sign in to Search Console and select the property that contains the site’s canonical URLs.
- Open Performance, then choose Discover (the report may be labelled Discover Performance).
- If Discover is not listed, verify that the property has reached the required impression volume and that the activity you are investigating falls inside the available 16-month period. A missing report is not proof of zero impressions.
- Confirm that you selected the correct property type. Page data is attributed to the property containing the canonical URL, so a URL can appear under a different property than the one where it was originally published.
The report can contain fewer rows than your site actually received. Google suppresses individual rows below a minimum impression threshold, while those impressions and clicks can still be included in property-level totals.
Start by recording the property, date range and export time in your notes. That simple context prevents a later reviewer from mistaking a filtered view, a different property variant or a newly processed day for a genuine performance change. If several teams manage subdomains, confirm whether they use a domain property or separate URL-prefix properties before comparing totals.
Configure the headline metrics
At the top of the report, enable Impressions, Clicks and Average CTR. Keep the denominator visible whenever you interpret CTR: average CTR is clicks divided by impressions, not a count of visits.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →| Metric | Search Console definition | What it does not represent |
|---|---|---|
| Impressions | A Discover item was scrolled into view, either as a standard item or inside a carousel. It counts once per session even if the user scrolls away and returns. | It is not a page load, unique person or guaranteed view of every element in the card. |
| Clicks | The user clicked the Discover item. | Sharing and other actions are not counted as clicks. |
| Average CTR | Clicks ÷ impressions for the selected scope and dates. | It is not sessions, engaged visits, conversions, revenue or proof that a headline caused performance. |
Web Stories have additional counting rules for stories opened from an initial Discover click. Treat their rows according to Google’s definitions rather than assuming they behave exactly like ordinary article cards.
CTR is best read alongside both raw counts. For example, a period with 10,000 impressions and 300 clicks has a 3% CTR. A later period with 8,000 impressions and 320 clicks has a 4% CTR: efficiency improved, but exposure fell and clicks rose only modestly. Reporting “CTR increased” without those two denominators would hide the business-relevant context. Conversely, a page can gain impressions and clicks while its CTR falls if reach expands faster than response.
Separate observation from interpretation
Write the first pass as an observation: “Clicks rose 18% week over week while impressions rose 30%.” Add interpretation only as a testable explanation: “The increase may reflect a larger audience mix or a different appearance type.” This wording prevents a ratio or a coincident publication date from becoming an unsupported causal claim.
Choose dates and granularity that answer your question
- Set a date range that includes the publication, redesign, promotion or other event you want to examine.
- Use the daily view to locate the timing of a spike or drop.
- Compare weekly or monthly aggregates when you need a steadier view. Aggregation reduces normal weekday, weekend and holiday variation.
- Use complete days for reporting whenever possible; the newest points may still be processing.
The 24-hour view is displayed in your browser’s local time and includes preliminary hourly data. Other date-range views use Pacific Time. Align this distinction before matching a Search Console day to an internal publishing calendar or another analytics system.
For an article launch, mark the publication time, the first complete Discover day and any promotion window. For a sitewide change, use a pre-change period and a post-change period of equal length. Avoid comparing a two-day burst with a 30-day baseline unless you label the comparison as directional. A holiday, major news event or unusual audience interest can dominate a short window without representing a durable pattern.

Break performance down by page, country and appearance
Use the report’s grouping tabs and filters to move from a property total to a testable comparison:
- Pages: find the canonical URLs associated with a change, then compare their impression, click and CTR trends.
- Countries: identify whether growth or decline is concentrated in a particular audience or market.
- Discover appearance: check whether the result is associated with a particular Discover format.
- Date, page and country filters: isolate the exact period, URL set or market you need.
Search Console tables are limited to 1,000 rows. Low-impression rows can be omitted, and filters can change which rows are displayed, so a visible table may not add up to the chart total.
Use a consistent comparison frame
| Axis | Check before comparing |
|---|---|
| Volume | Report impressions and clicks separately; a larger CTR can still accompany fewer clicks if impressions fell. |
| Efficiency | Show the clicks/impressions denominator alongside CTR. |
| Time | Match durations, use complete days and keep the time zone consistent. |
| Content | Use canonical URLs and record publication or update dates. |
| Audience and surface | Hold country and Discover appearance type constant when those dimensions matter. |
| Confidence | Mark preliminary points, threshold suppression and the 1,000-row table limit. |
Do not create a long list of tiny segments just because the controls allow it. A country-page-appearance combination with very few impressions may be suppressed or unstable. Begin with the property total, then investigate the largest page or country movements, and only then create a narrower filter that answers a specific question.

Understand URL attribution and missing rows
Search Console assigns page metrics to the canonical URL. If several URL variants contain the same content, duplicate variants may show zero while the canonical URL receives the data. The metrics appear in the property that contains that canonical URL.
Two totals can therefore both be correct: the chart can include activity from omitted low-impression rows, while the table lists only rows that meet the threshold and fit within its 1,000-row limit. A filtered table is a view of the selected rows, not necessarily a complete reconstruction of the property total.
When a page appears to have lost traffic, inspect its canonical tag, redirects, protocol and host variants, and trailing-slash or parameter conventions. A newly selected canonical can move attribution away from the URL your editorial team recognizes. Record the canonical URL shown in Search Console rather than relying on a copied campaign URL or a browser bookmark.
Handle preliminary data and export caveats
Recent Discover values can change as Google finishes collecting and processing events. Label the latest points as preliminary and avoid declaring a trend from an incomplete day.
Recommended Free Tools
For a repeatable review, use the report’s export control to download chart and table data. Google notes that values rendered in the interface as unavailable or non-numeric may export as zero. Preserve that caveat in spreadsheets or scripts so an exported zero is not automatically interpreted as confirmed zero activity.

Keep the original download, the filtered view used to create it and the date of export. If a later export revises a preliminary day, you can explain why the historical number changed. Do not silently replace unavailable values with blanks or zeros; document the transformation so another analyst can reproduce the calculation.
Reconcile Search Console with analytics
Search Console measures Discover impressions and clicks on Google’s surface. An analytics product generally measures what happened after a browser reached your site, such as sessions, engaged visits or on-site events. Those are different units, so equal numbers are not expected.
- Use the same calendar dates and account for Pacific Time in Search Console’s ordinary date views.
- Compare the same canonical URL, including redirects, URL parameters and trailing-slash conventions.
- Map a Search Console click to the analytics metric you are actually using; do not compare clicks with sessions as if they were identical.
- Check whether analytics filters, consent choices, ad blockers or attribution rules remove visits that Search Console counted.
- Investigate large differences only after confirming coverage and processing status.
Google explains that Search Console and other tools can differ because of coverage, data processing, privacy protections and measurement methods. See About Search Console data.
A useful reconciliation table has one row per period and columns for Search Console impressions, clicks and CTR, plus analytics sessions, engaged visits and conversions. Add notes for redirects, consent changes, tracking deployments and preliminary dates. This does not make the systems agree; it makes the reason for disagreement visible.
What the report can—and cannot—prove
The report can establish how many Discover impressions and clicks Google reports for the selected property, and how those figures and their ratio vary by date, page, country and appearance type. It cannot by itself establish why traffic changed, what a visitor did after clicking, or whether a specific headline, image or publication decision caused the result.
For example, a CTR increase may come from more clicks, fewer impressions, or both. A page-level drop may coincide with a technical release, but the timing alone does not prove causation. Treat correlations as hypotheses and check other evidence such as indexing status, canonical tags, page changes, audience mix and analytics behavior.
Discover is supplemental and less predictable than query-driven Search. A decline can follow a shift in user interests, a different content mix, a Search update or a Discover product change. Publishing more often is not a guaranteed way to recover traffic, and publishing less often is not proof that quality fell. Phrase conclusions narrowly: “The report shows a decline during this period,” not “the redesign caused the decline,” unless independent evidence supports that claim.

- Write accurate titles and avoid clickbait or sensationalism.
- Publish timely or distinctive material when it genuinely serves an audience interest.
- Use relevant, high-quality representative images.
- Provide a good page experience.
For large Discover images, Google recommends at least 1,200 pixels of width, more than 300,000 total pixels, a 16:9 ratio, and either max-image-preview:large or AMP. Specify a representative image using supported metadata. These are Google Search Central recommendations, not guaranteed ranking factors or a traffic quota. The current guidance is at Discover and your website (page updated March 9, 2026 UTC).
Use these recommendations as implementation checks, not as an explanation for every movement in the chart. If you change an image, title or template, record the change and compare a complete pre-change and post-change period. The report can show whether exposure or clicks moved afterward; it cannot isolate that edit from simultaneous changes in audience interest or Discover distribution.
Troubleshoot common measurement problems
The Discover report is missing
- Confirm you are in the correct Search Console property.
- Check whether the property has accumulated enough Discover impressions.
- Set a date range within the 16-month reporting window.
- Remember that eligibility and indexing do not guarantee Discover placement.
A URL shows zero while the site total increased
- Look for the canonical URL and inspect duplicate URL variants.
- Check whether the URL’s row is below the impression threshold.
- Review the unfiltered chart because the table may omit rows or exceed its 1,000-row display limit.
The latest day suddenly fell
- Check whether the point is preliminary or still within the incomplete 24-hour window.
- Verify the local-time versus Pacific-Time interpretation.
- Compare complete weekly or monthly periods before calling it a sustained decline.
Search Console clicks do not match sessions
- Align date, time zone, URL and filters.
- Compare like-for-like definitions: Discover clicks versus analytics sessions or events.
- Account for privacy, consent, blocking and processing differences before diagnosing a tracking failure.
The table total is lower than the chart
- Check for omitted low-impression rows.
- Remember the 1,000-row limit.
- Remove filters and compare the same date range before concluding that data is missing.
A sudden spike disappears in the next export
- Check whether the first export included preliminary hourly or daily values.
- Confirm that both exports use the same time zone and date scope.
- Retain both files and annotate the revision instead of overwriting the earlier result.
A reproducible monthly review
- Export the property chart and table after the date range is complete.
- Record impressions, clicks and CTR, including the CTR denominator.
- List the highest-volume canonical pages and note omitted or zero rows separately.
- Compare countries and appearance types using the same dates.
- Annotate publication dates, major page changes and any preliminary values.
- Validate downstream sessions or conversions in analytics without treating them as replacements for Discover metrics.
- Write conclusions as observations and hypotheses, not as proof that one editorial or technical action caused a change.
For a recurring report, preserve a short methodology note: property selected, date convention, filters, export timestamp, treatment of unavailable values and definitions of every analytics column. That note makes month-to-month comparisons auditable and prevents a future analyst from mixing local-time 24-hour data with Pacific-Time daily data.
Frequently asked questions
How far back can I measure Discover performance?
Google describes a 16-month Discover reporting window, subject to the property meeting the impression requirement. Older activity is not available through this report, so export regular snapshots if you need a longer historical record.
Does an impression mean someone read the article?
No. It means the Discover item was scrolled into view, as a standard item or in a carousel. It is not a page load, unique person or proof that every part of the card was noticed.
Why is a page missing from the Pages table?
The row may be below the minimum impression threshold, beyond the 1,000-row table limit or excluded by a filter. Its activity can still be included in the property chart. Also check whether Google attributed the activity to a different canonical URL.
Why does a duplicate URL show zero?
Page metrics are assigned to the canonical URL. A parameterized, redirected or otherwise duplicate URL can show zero while the canonical URL receives the impressions and clicks. Check the canonical tag and the property that contains it.
Can I use CTR to judge a headline?
CTR can show that clicks divided by impressions changed, but it cannot prove that a headline caused the change. Exposure, audience mix, country, appearance type and user interests may have changed at the same time. Compare complete periods and inspect impressions and clicks separately.

Why do Discover clicks differ from analytics sessions?
They measure different stages. Search Console reports clicks on Google’s Discover surface; analytics usually reports visits or events after the browser reaches your site. Time zones, redirects, consent, blocking, privacy processing and attribution rules can widen the difference.
Should I report the newest day?
Only with a preliminary label. The 24-hour view uses local browser time and preliminary hourly data, while other date views use Pacific Time. Prefer complete days for formal comparisons and allow processing to finish.
Is there a guaranteed image size or publishing frequency for Discover?
No. Google recommends a representative image at least 1,200 pixels wide, more than 300,000 total pixels, a 16:9 ratio and either max-image-preview:large or AMP, but those recommendations do not guarantee placement. Google also says Discover traffic is less predictable and that changes may be unrelated to publishing frequency.

The Bottom Line
Measure Discover with Search Console’s impressions, clicks and CTR, then segment by canonical page, country, appearance type and complete date ranges. Interpret thresholds, row limits, preliminary values and time zones before comparing periods or analytics. Use the report to describe what changed and formulate hypotheses—not to claim a cause it cannot establish.
