SketchUp uses different tools for different measurement jobs: Tape Measure checks distances and creates temporary guides, Protractor handles angles, the Measurements box accepts precise values for the active tool, and dimension entities display measurements on a model. For printed drawings, LayOut has its own dimensions, whose values depend on whether you measure page geometry or geometry inside a SketchUp model.
Choose the right measurement method

Measure a distance or create a guide
Choose Tape Measure, then click the start and end points of the distance you want to check. The result appears in the Measurements box, and the tool can also show coordinates along an axis. The default keyboard shortcut is T; if shortcuts have been customized, check the current assignment in SketchUp’s keyboard-shortcut reference.

Tape Measure is also a construction aid. Its modes let you create guide lines and guide points. These are temporary helpers: they do not become regular geometry or interfere with it. The official measurement overview describes these measurement and guide functions.

Measure an angle
Use the Protractor tool to measure an angle or create an angled guide. The official overview establishes those functions but does not provide a detailed click-by-click procedure, so the exact interaction may depend on the task and SketchUp version.
Enter exact values while modeling
Use the Measurements box in the lower-right corner of the SketchUp interface. It is context-sensitive: the active tool determines whether your entry sets a shape’s dimensions, a movement distance, a rotation, or a scale. Start the relevant drawing or transformation operation, type the value, and let the active tool apply it. You generally do not need to click in the box first.

You can include a unit suffix to express a value in a unit different from the model’s current display unit. Documented examples include 10", 10', 10mm, 10cm, and 10m. These are examples, not a complete syntax reference for every locale or version. See SketchUp’s Measurements box documentation.
Resize a model to a known measurement
To resize the entire model to a known length, measure a reference edge with Tape Measure, enter the intended new length in the Measurements box, and confirm SketchUp’s prompt to resize the model. This changes the model’s overall scale rather than merely recording a measurement.

For only selected geometry, SketchUp distinguishes resizing with Tape Measure from changing size by a percentage with the Scale tool. Choose the workflow that matches whether you know a target length or want a proportional adjustment. See SketchUp’s scaling guide for the documented distinction.
Add dimensions that remain visible on the model
Use dimension entities when a measurement should appear as an annotation rather than just a temporary readout. SketchUp supports dimensions for line lengths, circle diameters, and arc radii. You can attach dimensions using inferred points such as endpoints, midpoints, points on an edge, intersections, and circle or arc centers. Model dimensions can update as the associated geometry changes. If you manually replace a dimension’s displayed text, it stops updating dynamically; SketchUp’s Model Info can identify dimensions that are no longer associated with their geometry.

LayOut dimensions can refer to two different spaces. A dimension attached to paper-space elements reports their size on the page; a dimension placed within a SketchUp model entity reports the model measurement. If a dimension crosses between paper space and a model entity, LayOut displays the paper-space measurement. Object snapping affects how dimensions attach and is enabled by default according to the LayOut dimensioning guide.

This distinction matters when preparing a drawing: a page measurement describes the plotted or laid-out representation, not necessarily the real-world size of the modeled object. Keep the dimension and the geometry it is intended to describe in the same space.
