AI creativity has no single context-free score. Define what counts as creative for the task, measure novelty against an explicit reference, and assess usefulness against the job the output is meant to do. Report those results separately: an unusual answer can be impractical, while a useful one can be conventional.
What does it mean to measure AI creativity?
A creativity metric measures a defined feature of an output or process; it does not measure every possible meaning of creativity at once. Standards differ across writing, design, scientific ideation and problem-solving. A score that is meaningful for one task may not say much about another.
There is no universally accepted definition or best metric. Moruzzi’s 2020 account proposes examining problem-solving, evaluation and naivety as features of creative processes, while a 2026 IJCAI paper by Jingyi Yang and Alexander Tuzhilin emphasizes newness, value and surprise, with measurements adapted to the domain. These are frameworks, not a settled consensus. Moruzzi, 2020; Yang and Tuzhilin, IJCAI 2026.

In idea generation, for example, counting ideas or checking how many categories they cover can describe fluency and flexibility. Those measures do not establish that any particular idea is original or good. Likewise, elaboration describes development or detail, not necessarily the quality of the finished output. The design-evaluation literature treats these as distinct attributes. “Exploring the use of LLMs to evaluate design creativity,” 2025.

How should novelty be measured?
Novelty is always relative to a comparison point. Before calculating it, say what an output is being compared with and what counts as a meaningful difference.
Choose a reference that fits the task
- Other outputs to the same prompt: useful for asking whether a system generates varied answers in one run or across runs. Variety within that set does not show that an idea is new to the wider field.
- A historical or domain corpus: useful for comparing outputs with documented prior work. Results depend on what the corpus contains and how ideas are represented.
- Accepted solutions or a baseline: useful for checking whether an answer differs from an established approach. A difference alone does not show that it is better.
- Qualified evaluators: useful when originality depends on context or specialist knowledge that a corpus or automated representation may miss. Evaluator knowledge and expertise shape the judgment.
Semantic distance can estimate how different an output is from a reference, but distance is not the same as meaningful novelty. A paraphrase may look different under one representation while keeping the same idea; a valuable recombination may look similar under a coarse one.
Understand what automated novelty proxies capture
- Perplexity reflects how surprising a sequence is under a language model. Low predictability is not proof of a new idea; it can also reflect unusual or awkward wording.
- Corpus rarity can flag uncommon material, but rarity may come from errors, phrasing or gaps in the corpus rather than originality.
- Semantic entropy is used in a 2026 ACL framework as a reference-free measure of divergent novelty and diversity. The paper reports validation against human annotations and other judgments; this is a proposed approach, not a universal standard. Sen et al., ACL 2026.
- LLM-judge scores can assess contextual originality, but they are judgments generated under a particular prompt and model configuration, not direct readings of novelty.
How should usefulness be measured?
Define usefulness in terms of the output’s intended purpose. Depending on the task, criteria might include feasibility, task completion, quality, appropriateness or compliance with constraints. Fluency and plausibility alone do not establish that an output will work.
For tasks requiring specialist knowledge, domain experts can judge whether an idea is workable. The Consensual Assessment Technique uses expert ratings to assess creative products. The Creative Product Semantic Scale offers a broader set of dimensions, including resolution or usefulness, novelty, and elaboration and synthesis; its full item set can be time-consuming to apply. These are options described in the design-evaluation literature, not one mandatory scoring system. Design-evaluation paper, 2025.
Rank #3
Keep task fulfilment distinct from divergent novelty. The 2026 ACL framework pairs semantic entropy for divergent creativity with retrieval-based, multi-agent judging for context-sensitive task fulfilment. One part estimates exploration of varied possibilities; the other checks whether an output meets the task. Neither result should silently substitute for the other. Sen et al., ACL 2026.
Why can creativity metrics disagree?
Different metrics operationalize different properties, and each can be sensitive to its data, implementation or evaluation conditions. A 2026 EACL analysis examined perplexity, LLM-as-a-Judge, a Creativity Index based on n-gram overlap with web corpora, and syntactic-template measures across creative writing, unconventional problem-solving and research ideation. Its abstract reports limited consistency across domains and disagreements between metrics on the same data. Lu et al., EACL 2026.
Rank #4
- Perplexity can reflect fluency or predictability rather than novelty.
- LLM judgments can shift with minor prompt changes and may show label bias.
- The Creativity Index primarily captures lexical diversity and is sensitive to implementation choices.
- Syntactic-template measures can be ineffective when the language is formulaic.
If two measures disagree, treat that disagreement as evidence that they capture different things or have different limits—not as a reason to select whichever score makes a system look best. No stable creativity ranking of current AI systems follows from the evidence described by these studies.

- Specify the task and domain. Describe what the system must produce and what the output is for. A creativity standard for ideation need not fit finished design work or problem-solving.
- Define novelty and its reference. State whether you compare with a corpus, baseline, other outputs or a human panel. Explain what counts as a meaningful difference.
- Set usefulness criteria. Choose observable requirements such as feasibility, task completion, quality or constraints met. Use domain expertise where specialized knowledge is needed.
- Choose measures for each dimension. Select a novelty method and a task-fulfilment method that fit the construct. If an automated proxy is used, name the property it approximates and its known limitations.
- Match evaluation conditions. Use the same prompts and comparable settings when comparing systems. Record the prompt, model and version, sampling settings, tools used and evaluation date.
- Check reliability. Repeat runs where practical; test prompt sensitivity and uncertainty; and, for human ratings, report raters’ expertise, number of ratings and agreement.
- Validate automated measures. Where feasible, compare them with qualified human assessments on a representative sample of outputs.
- Report components before any aggregate. Show novelty and usefulness separately. If a combined score is necessary, explain its weighting and retain the underlying component scores.
This reporting framework makes comparisons interpretable without pretending that a single number captures all of creativity:
| Report | What to specify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Task and domain | What outputs are judged and for what purpose | Creativity standards vary between ideation, writing, design and problem-solving. |
| Novelty reference | Corpus, baseline, comparison outputs or human panel | Changing the reference can change the novelty result. |
| Usefulness criteria | Feasibility, task completion, quality, constraints or impact | A surprising answer may not do the intended job. |
| Measurement method | Human rubric, semantic distance or entropy, judge model, lexical or syntactic proxy | Methods capture different properties and have different failure modes. |
| Reliability | Repeat runs, rater agreement, prompt sensitivity and uncertainty | A one-off score may not reproduce. |
| Conditions | Prompt, model and version, sampling settings, tools and date | Outputs and comparisons depend on the conditions used. |
What does a current benchmark show—and what does it not show?
A 2026 Nature Communications page describes LiveIdeaBench, a benchmark for scientific idea generation from minimal-context keywords. The page describes assessment of originality, feasibility, fluency, flexibility and clarity, and reports a scale of 40-plus models, 1,180 scientific keywords and 22 scientific domains. Those figures describe the benchmark’s reported scale, not proof that its scores exhaustively measure creativity. Its stated scope is divergent thinking, not the entire scientific process. The page could not be directly opened for detailed methodology in the available account, so the figures and scope here should be treated as a description of that 2026 page, not an independent verification of its methods.
