Measure the patio’s length and width, sketch its obstacles and access routes, then compare furniture dimensions with the space each piece needs while in use. A square-footage total is useful, but it cannot tell you whether a dining chair can pull out or a door can open. Marking a proposed layout on the ground with painter’s tape or chalk is a practical final fit check.
1. Decide how you want to use the patio
Start with the main activity: dining, lounging, conversation, or a mix. That choice determines what furniture to measure and where people will need room to sit, stand, and move. A dining arrangement needs space for chairs to slide back; a lounger needs room to extend; a conversation setup needs a usable route between seating and other parts of the patio.
2. Measure the floor area and sketch it
Use a tape measure and record the patio’s length and width in the same unit, such as feet or inches. Keep both measurements, even after calculating area: two spaces with the same area can have very different layouts if one is narrow.

Multiply length by width to estimate the floor area. For example, CHITA Living’s guide uses a 10-foot-by-12-foot deck to illustrate an area of 120 square feet; that is an arithmetic example, not a furniture-fit guarantee. CHITA Living’s measuring guide

Record vertical restrictions too
On the sketch, note overhead limits that could affect furniture such as an umbrella, including a roof, balcony, or other obstruction. NewAge Products’ guide also recommends recording vertical measurements when planning an outdoor space. NewAge Products’ space-measuring guide

3. Mark obstacles and the routes people need
Draw in doors and their swing, steps, railings, posts, grills, planters, utilities, and other fixed features. Mark the route people need to walk through the patio, and treat that route as space the furniture arrangement must preserve. For a grill or outdoor kitchen, follow equipment-specific instructions; guidance for those installations should not be assumed to apply to ordinary patio furniture. 4. Check each item’s full dimensions
For every candidate piece, compare its published width and depth with the area where it will sit. Check height as well when overhead clearance matters. Use the product’s actual specifications rather than assuming that a category—such as a bistro set or conversation set—will fit because it is marketed for a small patio.

6. Mock up the layout before ordering
- Use painter’s tape or chalk to mark each item’s full footprint on the patio.
- Walk the routes you marked and check that doors and access points remain usable.
- Simulate sitting down, pulling dining chairs out, and extending loungers or opening an umbrella where relevant.
- Adjust the arrangement if it blocks access or feels too tight, then compare the revised positions with the products’ published dimensions before ordering.
A tape measure is the basic tool for this job; a laser distance measurer is an optional alternative for larger areas. Painter’s tape or chalk makes it easier to test the arrangement at full scale. CHITA Living’s measuring guide and Wayfair’s patio seating guide
