The reliable way to measure a company’s relationship with nature is a structured assessment, not a single score. Define what the company and value chain include, map where activities meet ecosystems, measure both the pressures the business creates and the ecosystem services it depends on, then connect those findings to risks, opportunities, targets and decisions. The Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) LEAP approach provides a practical structure for doing this.

Impact and dependence are different measurements. An impact is a pressure the company causes or contributes to, such as land conversion, water withdrawal, pollution or resource extraction. A dependence is a business reliance on nature, such as water regulation, pollination, flood protection or a stable supply of biological materials. A credible assessment traces both pathways from business activity to nature and from nature back to business performance.

What a company is actually measuring

Nature measurement has four connected questions:

  • Dependencies: Which ecosystem services, ecological conditions or natural resources must be available for the business to operate?
  • Impacts: What pressures does the company cause or contribute to, directly or through its value chain?
  • Risks and opportunities: How could degraded or restored nature affect revenue, costs, assets, finance, resilience, regulation or market access?
  • Responses: What actions, policies, investments and targets is the company taking, and are those actions producing better environmental outcomes?

These questions should be measured separately and then connected. A water-use figure, for example, is not by itself a measure of ecological damage or business risk. Its meaning depends on the location, the condition of the watershed, competing demand, the pathway through which withdrawal affects ecosystems and the company’s reliance on that water.

There is no universal nature score that can accurately represent every business. A mining company, a software provider with a large data-centre footprint, a food manufacturer and a bank have different interfaces with nature. A useful system is therefore materiality-based, location-aware and explicit about uncertainty.

Use TNFD’s LEAP structure as the assessment spine

TNFD’s LEAP approach organises the work around locating interfaces with nature, evaluating dependencies and impacts, assessing risks and opportunities, and preparing to respond and report. TNFD’s assessment page states that LEAP v2.0 was published in October 2026, the first upgrade since LEAP v1.0 in September 2023. The page also provides additional guidance for value chains, sectors, biomes, scenario analysis, and engagement with Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities.

Use the latest LEAP version and sector guidance when starting an assessment. LEAP is a decision and disclosure structure, not a replacement for local ecological studies, regulatory reporting or a company’s own operational controls.

Step 1: Define the organisational scope

Write the boundary of the assessment before collecting indicators. Record the reporting entity, period, operational boundary and value-chain coverage. The scope should state which subsidiaries, sites, products, suppliers, contractors, distributors and downstream activities are included.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Document the boundary

  • List the legal entities and facilities included, including joint ventures or leased sites where relevant.
  • State the reporting year and whether figures are annual, seasonal, monthly or event-based.
  • Separate owned and controlled operations from upstream and downstream activities.
  • Identify material suppliers, commodities, transport routes and customer uses that may affect nature.
  • Record exclusions, unavailable data and estimates instead of silently treating missing information as zero.

Apply local environmental and corporate-reporting requirements separately. TNFD guidance is a voluntary framework structure; it is not a jurisdiction-specific compliance checklist.

Step 2: Locate where the business meets nature

Map operational sites and material value-chain activities against ecosystems and places. Location is essential because ecosystem condition, water availability, species sensitivity and service provision vary from one place to another.

Build a location inventory

  1. Compile coordinates or sufficiently precise geographic boundaries for offices, plants, mines, farms, warehouses, data centres, ports and other material sites.
  2. Map upstream commodities and suppliers to the greatest practical geographic resolution. A country-level supplier record may be useful for screening but is rarely enough for local ecological conclusions.
  3. Identify relevant rivers, aquifers, coastlines, forests, grasslands, wetlands, agricultural landscapes and other ecosystems connected to each activity.
  4. Flag sites in or near areas of high ecological sensitivity, water stress, rapid habitat change or dependence on scarce ecosystem services.
  5. Prioritise locations for detailed assessment according to the potential significance of dependencies and impacts.

A location screen is a prioritisation step. It is not proof that the company has caused a measured impact, and it cannot substitute for local data. Keep the screening result separate from verified ecological condition or outcome measurements.

Step 3: Identify impact drivers and dependencies

For each priority activity and location, list the pressures the activity creates and the ecosystem services or conditions on which it relies. Consider the five broad drivers of nature change where they are relevant: land and sea use change, direct exploitation of organisms and resources, climate change, pollution, and invasive alien species.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Examples of impact drivers

  • Land clearing, habitat conversion, soil sealing or fragmentation.
  • Water abstraction, alteration of flow, drainage or changes to groundwater recharge.
  • Extraction of timber, fish, minerals, biomass or other biological and geological resources.
  • Greenhouse-gas emissions that contribute to climate-driven ecological change.
  • Nutrient loading, toxic substances, plastics, wastewater, noise, light or other waste streams.
  • Transport or trade pathways that introduce or spread invasive species.

Sector guidance can help identify more specific pollutants, waste categories and pressure pathways. Do not list every possible driver automatically; include an issue when the company’s activity actually creates or contributes to it.

Examples of dependencies

  • Water supply, groundwater recharge or watershed regulation for production and cooling.
  • Pollination and soil functions for agricultural inputs or food products.
  • Flood attenuation, coastal protection or erosion control for exposed facilities.
  • Biological materials, genetic resources or natural fibres used in products.
  • Climate and microclimate regulation that supports yields, equipment reliability or worker safety.

Describe the dependency in operational terms. A company should not claim a dependence on pollination merely because it sells food; the claim should identify where its products or suppliers actually rely on pollinating organisms and how that reliance could affect the business.

Step 4: Choose indicators that answer the decision question

TNFD’s metric architecture separates four categories. The categories prevent a company from treating a management action, an ecological pressure and a financial risk as interchangeable numbers.

Metric category What it measures Typical use
Location-prioritisation metrics Where activities intersect with potentially important ecosystems, dependencies or impacts Screening and deciding which sites or value-chain locations need deeper analysis
Dependency-and-impact metrics The company’s dependencies and the pressures or impacts associated with activities Understanding material relationships with nature and tracking operational exposure
Risk-and-opportunity metrics Effects of nature-related conditions on enterprise value, finance, resilience or strategic opportunities Integrating nature into risk management, capital allocation and strategy
Response metrics Policies, actions, investments, governance, restoration or risk controls Tracking what the company is doing without presenting action as proof of ecological recovery

Within this architecture, TNFD distinguishes core global indicators, additional indicators, sector metrics and assessment metrics. Core disclosure metrics are intended to support broader comparability. Sector metrics add specificity, while assessment metrics can support internal decisions without necessarily being required for external disclosure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Write a metric specification for every indicator

For each measure, document:

  • the question it answers and the decision it informs;
  • the unit, calculation and aggregation rule;
  • the organisational, geographic and value-chain boundary;
  • the reporting period and base year;
  • the data source, owner and collection frequency;
  • the estimation method, assumptions and uncertainty;
  • whether the value is measured, modelled, estimated or screened; and
  • how the result can be repeated and assured.

Choose indicators that fit the company’s sector, geography and business model. A high-resolution local measure may be more useful for a site decision than a globally comparable aggregate, while a core indicator may be preferable for public reporting. Use both when the decisions require both kinds of information.

Step 5: Interpret pressure measures in ecological context

A pressure figure alone rarely explains what changed in nature. Pair it with the location, pathway, affected ecosystem, condition or service, and the method used to estimate the relationship.

Connect the causal pathway

For each material issue, describe the chain from activity to pressure, from pressure to ecological condition or service provision, and from that condition to a business consequence. For example, a facility’s water withdrawal may reduce downstream flow during a dry season; reduced flow may affect wetland function; that change may increase treatment costs, interrupt production or expose the company to restrictions.

State whether the pressure is direct or indirect and whether the company causes, contributes to or is exposed to it through a business relationship. Where several actors contribute, avoid attributing the entire ecological change to one company without a defensible allocation method.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use thresholds carefully

Compare a pressure with an ecological threshold only when credible, local or ecosystem-specific evidence supports the comparison. An aggregate company-wide figure should not be presented as an ecological outcome measure merely because it is precise. Explain geographic aggregation, model limitations and confidence levels.

Step 6: Assess nature-related risks, opportunities and responses

Translate assessment findings into the company’s existing risk and strategy processes. Consider physical risks from changes in ecosystem condition or service availability, transition risks from policy, markets, technology or reputation, and opportunities linked to restoration, resource efficiency, resilient sourcing or new products and services.

Separate risk from impact

A company can have a significant impact without an immediate financial loss, and it can face a material dependency risk even when its current impact is limited. Keep impact and dependency results visible when ranking financial and strategic risks; do not let a financial materiality screen erase important nature impacts.

Track responses without overstating outcomes

Response measures may include board oversight, supplier requirements, land-management changes, pollution controls, water-efficiency projects, restoration, procurement shifts, engagement with affected communities and capital allocation. Report these actions separately from environmental outcomes. Spending money, adopting a policy or completing a project is evidence of a response, not proof that nature improved.

Step 7: Set targets and report progress

TNFD’s LEAP v1.1 guidance describes a target as a specific, quantitative and time-bound objective, preferably with a defined means of measurement. TNFD recommends alignment with the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.

Make targets measurable

  1. Define the pressure, dependency, ecological condition, risk or response the target addresses.
  2. Specify the boundary, locations, value-chain coverage and baseline year.
  3. Set a quantitative level and deadline, with interim milestones where useful.
  4. Name the measurement method, data source and treatment of uncertainty.
  5. Assign accountability, funding and decision rights.
  6. Explain how progress will be reviewed and what happens if the target is missed.

Report year-on-year changes with the metric definition, scope, method and data gaps. If a core disclosure metric is material but cannot yet be measured, explain why, what limitation prevents measurement and how the organisation plans to address it.

How to compare tools and indicator sets

When evaluating a geospatial platform, accounting method, internal dashboard or disclosure template, compare the attributes that affect decision quality rather than choosing the tool with the largest list of indicators.

Comparison axis Questions to ask
Geographic resolution Can the method distinguish sites, watersheds, habitats and seasons, or does it only provide national or global averages?
Operational and value-chain coverage Does it handle owned sites, suppliers, commodities, logistics and downstream activities?
Dependencies and impacts Does it measure both what the company relies on and the pressures it creates?
Sector relevance Are the indicators meaningful for the company’s products, processes and major commodities?
Pressure-to-condition link Can it explain how a pressure relates to ecosystem condition or service provision?
Data provenance and uncertainty Are sources, modelling assumptions, confidence and estimation methods recorded?
Repeatability Can the company calculate the measure consistently each reporting period?
Framework compatibility Can results support TNFD disclosure and, where relevant, SBTN target-setting or other reporting needs?
Cost and assurance readiness Can the company afford the data, specialist analysis and controls needed to reproduce and verify the result?

TNFD recognises cross-sector and sector measures, internal assessment metrics and location prioritisation. A practical system often combines a screening layer for the whole portfolio with detailed local analysis for priority locations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Data quality, governance and assurance

Assign ownership across sustainability, operations, procurement, finance, risk, legal and internal audit. Nature data often crosses organisational boundaries: procurement may hold supplier locations, operations may hold withdrawals and emissions, and finance may hold the assets and revenue exposed to a site.

Common failure modes and fixes

Using one aggregate score

Problem: A single number hides different ecosystems, pressures and dependencies.

Fix: Keep location, impact, dependency, risk and response measures distinct, then show how they connect.

Confusing screening with measurement

Problem: A map flags a sensitive area, and the company reports that it has measured an impact.

Fix: Label the map as a prioritisation screen and collect local condition or pressure data before drawing an outcome conclusion.

Reporting actions as outcomes

Problem: A policy, project or expenditure is treated as evidence that biodiversity or ecosystem condition improved.

Fix: Report the response and the ecological outcome as separate measures, with the method and time lag stated.

Ignoring dependencies

Problem: The assessment lists pollution or land-use pressures but does not examine water, soil, pollination or protective services the business needs.

Hiding data gaps

Problem: Missing supplier or ecological data are silently excluded, creating false precision.

Fix: Disclose the gap, its likely effect on the result and a dated plan to improve coverage.

Attributing shared impacts incorrectly

Problem: A company claims full responsibility for, or full credit for reversing, a change caused by many actors.

Fix: Describe contribution, pathway and allocation assumptions, and avoid stronger attribution than the evidence supports.

How the major frameworks fit together

TNFD supplies an assessment and disclosure structure for dependencies, impacts, risks and opportunities. The Science Based Targets Network (SBTN) provides resources for science-based target-setting, including 2026 biodiversity and land-impact guidance listed on its resources page. The Nature Positive Initiative is part of the aligned updates announced with TNFD and SBTN on 13 October 2026 to support more consistent nature assessment, target-setting and corporate reporting.

These frameworks can be used together, but they do different jobs. TNFD helps organise assessment, governance and disclosure; SBTN helps translate science into target-setting; and aligned initiatives can improve consistency across methods. Check the latest editions and sector guidance before adopting a metric or target because framework content and terminology continue to evolve.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Useful scale markers

TNFD reported that its 2022 survey identified more than 3,000 unique nature-related indicators and metrics. That historical result revealed inconsistent definitions, different indicators for similar topics and uneven coverage; it is not a current count of all available metrics.

TNFD’s current metrics page describes 14 core global indicators, including nine core global dependency-and-impact indicators and indicators covering nature-related risks and opportunities. Confirm the current page when preparing a disclosure because metric guidance can change.

A practical minimum viable assessment

A smaller company can begin without pretending to have complete ecological measurement. A defensible first cycle should still include:

  1. A written boundary and data-gap register.
  2. A map of owned operations and the most material value-chain locations.
  3. A prioritised list of impact drivers and genuine dependencies.
  4. A documented set of indicators with units, methods and uncertainty.
  5. A description of causal pathways and material risks and opportunities.
  6. Separate response measures and at least one specific, quantitative, time-bound improvement target.
  7. A reporting note explaining limitations and the next data improvements.

Expand geographic detail, supplier coverage and ecological outcome measurement as the most material gaps are resolved. The objective is not to collect every possible indicator; it is to produce information that is decision-useful, repeatable and honest about what is known.
