When console storage fills up, first decide whether you need a game stored or playable directly from that storage. On Nintendo Switch, a microSD card adds space for downloaded software while saves stay in system memory. On PS5, a compatible internal M.2 SSD can store and play PS5 and PS4 games; USB extended storage can keep games installed, but PS5 games must be moved back before you can play them. If you only need room temporarily, archiving or deleting games you can redownload may be simpler than buying storage.
This guide covers Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite, Switch OLED, and PS5. The current Xbox-specific storage instructions could not be verified from the available official support page, so this article does not give Xbox setup or product advice.
Choose a storage action based on what you need
| What you want | Best fit | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Free space without keeping the game installed | Archive or delete software on Switch; delete the game on PS5 | Games can be downloaded again. Switch saves remain in system memory, and Sony says deleted PS5 purchases can be downloaded again from the game library. Nintendo’s data management FAQ and Sony’s PS5 storage guide explain the respective options. |
| Keep games installed, but not necessarily ready to play from the added drive | PS5 USB extended storage | PS4 games can be played from it. PS5 games stored there must be moved to console storage or an M.2 SSD before play. Sony’s USB extended-storage guide. |
| Expand the library of games playable from added storage | Switch microSD card or compatible PS5 M.2 SSD | Switch microSD cards store software data, not save data. A compatible PS5 M.2 SSD can store and play PS5 and PS4 games. Check the manufacturer’s current requirements before buying. Nintendo’s FAQ and Sony’s M.2 storage guidance. |
Nintendo Switch: free space or add a microSD card
On Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED, game save data is stored in system memory—not on a microSD card or game card. A microSD card is for additional software storage, including downloaded games, updates, and DLC. That distinction means you can make room for a game without treating its save as part of the downloaded software.
Archive software when you may want the icon to remain
Archiving removes downloaded software to free space but leaves its icon on the HOME Menu. Select the icon later to redownload the software. The save data is not deleted when you archive the game. See Nintendo’s data management FAQ and software management instructions.
#1 Best Overall
- Compatible with Nintendo-Switch (NOT Nintendo-Switch 2)
- Incredible speeds in a microSD card officially licensed for the Nintendo Switch, Nintendo OLED, and Nintendo Switch Lite systems
- Spend less time waiting and more time playing with read speeds up to 100MB/s(1) and write speeds up to 90MB/s(1).
- Instantly add up to 256GB (1GB=1,000,000,000 bytes. Actual user storage less.)
- Store your downloaded games, screenshots and video captures in 1 place so you can travel light.
Delete software when you do not need its HOME Menu icon
Deleting also frees the space, but removes the software icon. To download the game again, use the Nintendo Account that purchased it. Deleting the software does not delete its save data. Nintendo’s management instructions describe the options.
Move eligible software between system memory and microSD
To relocate eligible software data, open System Settings > Data Management > Move Data Between System / microSD Card. This is a way to move eligible data, not an install-location selector. Save data and some update data cannot be moved this way. Follow Nintendo’s move-data instructions for the available choices.

- EXPAND YOUR STORAGE. Insert your card to add massive storage up to 1.5TB[1] to your Android smartphones and tablets, digital cameras, and laptops.
- SPACE FOR MORE. With expansive capacities up to 1.5TB[1], capture and store hours of Full HD video[4], movies, music, games, photos, and podcasts.
- MOVE FILES FAST. Use your card with the SANDISK QuickFlow microSD UHS-I Card USB-A Reader[6] to achieve up to 195MB/s[2] read speeds [128GB-1.5TB models] and offload your content fast.
- LOAD APPS IN A SNAP. Rated A1[3], the SANDISK Ultra microSD card is optimized for faster app launch and overall app performance.
- EASY CONTENT MANAGEMENT. Easily back up, organize, and transfer your photos and videos with the SANDISK Memory Zone desktop or Android mobile app[5].
When a microSD card makes sense
Choose a microSD card when the problem is room for downloaded software and you want more of your library retained on the console. It does not expand the space used for saves. Check the card’s compatibility with your Switch model before purchase; Nintendo’s data FAQ describes the data types supported.

PS5: decide between deleting, USB storage, and M.2 expansion
Sony offers three distinct ways to address game-installation space: delete games you can download again, keep games on USB extended storage, or install a compatible M.2 SSD. These options are not interchangeable: only the M.2 expansion lets you play PS5 games directly from the added drive.

- Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
- Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.
Delete and redownload games you do not need installed
Deleting a purchased game removes its installed data, not access to the purchase. Sony says deleted games and applications can be downloaded again from your game library. Use this when you want to reclaim space and do not need the game immediately available. Manage saved data separately from game installation data in Sony’s storage guide.
Use USB extended storage to keep games without using console space
A USB extended-storage drive can hold games outside the console’s internal storage. PS4 games can be played directly from the drive. PS5 games stored on USB must be moved back to console storage or an M.2 SSD before they can be played. Sony’s cited guide specifies SuperSpeed USB 5 Gbps or later and a capacity from 250 GB minimum to 8 TB maximum; verify the current requirements and drive compatibility on Sony’s extended-storage page before buying.

USB game storage is not a backup for PS5 saves. Sony handles saved data separately; its guide describes cloud storage for PlayStation Plus members. See PS5 storage and saved-data management for the relevant controls.

Sony’s M.2 expansion option supports downloading, copying, storing, managing, and playing PS5 and PS4 games. The drive must meet Sony’s specifications, and installation is internal rather than a simple USB connection. Check the current requirements and installation guidance on Sony’s M.2 SSD page before selecting a drive. Compatibility requirements can change, so do not rely on a third-party product listing as the final authority.

Xbox: verify current guidance before buying storage
The official Xbox storage-management page available for this guide did not expose its article content, so current Xbox-compatible storage types, capacity limits, transfer steps, and rules for playing games from external storage are not established here. Consult Xbox Support’s storage-management page for current instructions before changing settings or choosing a drive.
Keep game storage and save data separate
Game installation data and saved progress are different things. Nintendo explicitly says Switch save data stays in system memory, including when software is archived or deleted. On PS5, Sony presents saved-data management separately from game storage; a USB extended-storage drive should not be treated as a save backup. Before removing game files, use the platform’s save-data controls if you want to review or manage saved progress.
