Before a child uses a connected toy, check what its microphone or camera can capture, what activates it, what the toy signals when it is active, and what happens to any recordings. There is no universal settings path or microphone-off control: options vary by toy, app, software version, and region. Use the manufacturer’s current instructions and privacy notice to verify each control.
Identify what the toy can hear or see
Start with the product box, manufacturer documentation, and companion app. Look for a microphone, camera, internet connection, account requirement, and voice features such as wake-word listening or a button-activated command. Check whether a voice feature works continuously for a wake word or only after a child presses a button; do not assume the activation method from the product description alone.
The Federal Trade Commission’s connected-toy checklist asks: “What will it be recording, and will you know when the camera or microphone is on?” FTC: Connected toys: What parents need to know. Look in the toy’s documentation for a light, sound, or other indicator, and verify what that signal means. Do not treat an indicator or physical switch as guaranteed: FTC advice about such controls for voice assistants is a prompt to check whether a particular toy has them, not proof that it does.

Inspect parent controls and defaults before setup is complete
Open the toy’s app and account settings before handing it to a child. Find out whether the toy requires a parent account or child profile, who is allowed to change settings, and whether voice features or recording are enabled by default. Check for controls to disable voice functions, manage a child profile, or disconnect the toy from an account or service—but rely on the maker’s instructions to confirm whether those options exist and what they do.

The FTC recommends that caregivers examine parental involvement, available controls, options, and default settings for connected toys. FTC connected-toy guidance. Record the settings you choose and check them again after app or toy software updates, because labels and available controls can change.
Trace what happens to voice recordings and other data
Read the privacy notice and product-specific help pages, not just a general statement that the toy is “secure” or “private.” Follow the recording from activation through deletion. The FTC advises caregivers to ask where data—including pictures and recordings—is stored, how it is shared, and who has access. FTC connected-toy checklist.

- Collection and purpose: What information does the toy collect, and why? Does voice audio leave the toy for a server, or is it processed locally?
- Storage and retention: Where is audio stored, and for how long? Is a recording kept only to fulfill a command, or retained in an account?
- Access and sharing: Who at the company or among its service providers can access the audio? Is it shared with other services, or reviewed by people?
- Review and deletion: Can a caregiver see or listen to saved recordings, delete individual files, or request deletion of associated child data? Check whether deleting an app or account also deletes stored recordings.
- Connected services: Does the toy link to an app, email address, social account, or another service? Identify what information is necessary to operate it and what happens if you disconnect it.
If the privacy notice does not answer these questions, ask the manufacturer for product-specific details. Do not infer that recordings are not kept or shared simply because the app offers no obvious recording history.

In the United States, the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) may apply to commercial websites and online services—including connected toys—that are directed to children under 13 and collect, use, or disclose children’s personal information. The FTC has a narrow enforcement policy for some brief voice-command recordings. When an operator collects a child’s voice recording solely as a temporary replacement for written words to perform a search or fulfill a verbal request, and keeps it only briefly for that purpose, the agency will not take enforcement action for failure to obtain parental consent on that basis. The operator must still give clear notice about collection, use, and deletion; may not use the audio for another purpose before destroying it; and must meet COPPA requirements in other respects. This limited policy should not be read as covering persistent recordings, voice profiles, unrelated analytics, or voice requests that include other personal information such as a child’s name. The FTC announcement says: “The policy does not apply when the operator requests information via voice that would otherwise be considered personal information, such as a name.” COPPA is U.S. federal guidance; this overview is not a complete account of laws in other jurisdictions, and a product’s marketing alone does not establish that it complies with the law.

What to do if the privacy information is unclear
If you cannot determine what a toy collects, how it shares or secures children’s data, or how to disable or delete voice data, pause before connecting it or letting a child use its voice features. Ask the maker for clear answers. The FTC’s advice is direct: “If you can’t find information on how a smart toy collects, shares, or secures your kids’ data, think about buying something else.” FTC connected-toy guidance.
A less-connected toy, including a non-connected educational toy, is one alternative to consider; the FTC does not endorse a particular brand or product. In 2018, the FTC announced that VTech agreed to pay $650,000 as part of a settlement resolving FTC allegations involving children’s privacy law and FTC Act violations. The announcement described allegations about parental notice and consent, reasonable data security, and encryption claims.
