To keep a Frostpunk city stable, match Generator heat to the weather, budget coal across every active heating source, and keep raw food moving through a Cookhouse into Food Rations. There is no single build order that works in every scenario: temperature, population, research, laws, and available food sources all change the balance.
How heat and coal work together
The Generator is the city’s main heat source, and its settings are a continuing coal cost. The community-maintained Frostpunk Wiki’s Generator reference lists consumption of 6 coal per hour at Steam level 1 and Range 1—144 coal per day before efficiency technologies. Higher power levels and greater range increase consumption; the cited figures are game-mechanics values, not real-world statistics.
Think of coal as a budget for the Generator and any other active heating. Before raising a setting, check the temperature and which homes or workplaces need heat. Raising power or range may help, but it also increases demand on the stockpile.
Choose how to cover buildings
Generator range, Steam Hubs, and heaters solve different coverage problems. The A New Home guide recommends clustering early buildings inside the Generator’s zone, then considering Steam Hubs as the city expands. A Hub can cover several nearby buildings; a heater is useful for an individual building, particularly one outside a practical shared zone. This is scenario guidance, not a universal ranking.
#1 Best Overall
- POST-APOCALYPTIC SURVIVAL GAME: In Frostpunk, players will take on the role of leaders of a small colony of survivors in a post-apocalyptic world that was hit by a severe ice age. Their duty is to effectively manage both its infrastructure and citizens.
- STRATEGY BOARD GAME: Make the Laws, send out expeditions to uncover the fate of humanity in the frozen wastes, face the consequences of your actions in front of those you swore to protect.
- MULTIPLE PATHS TO VICTORY: The players will decide the fate of their people. Will you treat them like another resource? Are you going to be an inspiring builder, a fearless explorer, or a bright scientist? Is your rule going to be a sting of tyranny or an era of law and equality?
- HIGHLY VARIABLE: The core gameplay is brutal, challenging, and complex, but easy to learn. The citizens won’t just be speechless pieces on the board. Society members will issue demands and react accordingly to the current mood, so every decision and action bears consequences.
- NUMBER OF PLAYERS AND AVERAGE PLAYTIME: This board game is designed for 1 to 4 players and is suitable for ages 16 and older. Average playtime is approximately 120-150 minutes.
| Option | Best fit | Coal and coverage considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Generator range | Buildings close enough to benefit from a broader central heat zone | Increasing range raises Generator consumption; consult the in-game coal balance when changing it. |
| Steam Hub | A cluster of buildings beyond the Generator’s zone | Can serve multiple buildings in one area; whether it is economical depends on the buildings and when they need heat. |
| Heater | An isolated building or one needing its own heat support | Targets an individual building; avoid treating it as a substitute for evaluating shared coverage. |
The A New Home guide also describes adjusting Generator heat around warmer periods and colder conditions or nighttime demand. Use the temperature and building status as cues rather than leaving the highest setting on by default.
Use overdrive as a temporary heat buffer
Overdrive adds heat without additional coal consumption, according to the Generator reference, but it builds stress that can threaten the Generator. Turn it on when an immediate heat boost is worth that risk, then watch the stress meter and switch it off before stress becomes dangerous. It is not a substitute for a sustainable coal and coverage plan.

Keep raw food moving into Food Rations
Raw food and Food Rations are separate stages of the supply chain. The Cookhouse converts 1 raw food into 2 Food Rations, according to the Cookhouse mechanics reference. Production alone does not put ready-to-eat rations into the stockpile: you also need a Cookhouse available to process the supply.
- Secure a raw-food source. The Food reference lists Hunters, Hothouses, scouting locations, an outpost, and an alternative-food law as possible sources. Which routes are available depends on the scenario and your progress.
- Make sure the source can operate. Assign workers or meet the relevant scenario requirements for the chosen source.
- Provide Cookhouse capacity. Confirm a Cookhouse is available so raw food can be converted into rations.
- Watch the ration stock against demand. Hunger can progress through hungry and starving states if citizens do not eat. The cited references do not establish one universal consumption figure, so reassess as population and circumstances change.
The available food routes are not established as universally comparable in output or workforce cost. Choose among them based on what the scenario unlocks, your available workers, and whether a route depends on an outpost or law.

A practical management loop
- Check the temperature forecast and identify homes or workplaces at risk.
- Review coal against the Generator’s current power and range, plus active Steam Hubs and heaters.
- Increase heat where conditions require it; for expansion, consider whether clustered buildings can share a Steam Hub instead of relying on individual heaters or a wider Generator range.
- If you use overdrive for an immediate boost, monitor its stress meter and turn it off before the risk escalates.
- Check raw-food production, then confirm that a Cookhouse can turn supply into Food Rations.
- Reassess after weather, population, research, or laws change.
These steps apply the cited mechanics and A New Home guidance; they are not a tested optimal strategy for every scenario, difficulty, or game version. Detailed operational figures and recommendations come from community-maintained game references, so check that they match the version and scenario you are playing. 11 bit studios describes Frostpunk as a society-survival game about ruling the last city on Earth; its official page is not the source for the mechanics above.
