To make room for a phone game, check what is using storage, then remove files you can download again or archive games you are not playing. Clear a game’s cache only if needed. Before deleting a game or clearing its data, confirm how that game saves progress: either action may erase locally stored saves or settings.
Check what is using storage first
Storage is the space used for apps, games, photos, and files. It is different from memory (RAM), which programs use while they run. A phone can have plenty of storage but still slow down for other reasons.
On iPhone
Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage. Review the list to see how much space apps and their data use. Apple notes that cached and temporary data may not be included in an app’s displayed size; iOS can remove some of it when space is needed. Apple’s storage guidance explains the distinction.

Open your phone’s Settings and look for Storage or a similarly named section. The exact path and labels depend on the phone maker and Android version. Google’s Android storage guidance covers options such as removing unused apps, clearing cache or data, and deleting downloaded files.

Check the game’s store listing or in-game storage information if you need to estimate the space required. The amount can change with updates and additional downloads, so leave room for the update to complete rather than relying only on the initial download size.
Choose a cleanup method by risk

Free space on Android
Remove downloads you no longer need
Use your phone’s file manager or Storage settings to review downloaded files. Google recommends copying files to a computer before deleting local copies if you want to keep them. Do not remove a file unless you know what it is and have another copy or can retrieve it again.
Archive a game you are not playing
Google Play can automatically archive infrequently used apps. The app is removed, but its icon and personal app data remain; you can download it again if it is still available on Google Play. To enable the feature, open Play Store > profile picture > Settings > General > Automatically archive apps. A manual archive option may also appear for supported apps. Archived games are not available for offline play until reinstalled. See Google Play’s app archiving guidance.

Clear cache before clearing data
On many Android phones, open Settings > Apps > [game] > Storage, then choose Clear cache. Menus vary by manufacturer and version. Cache is temporary data; a game may take longer to load or rebuild it afterward.
Do not choose Clear storage or Clear data as a routine cleanup step. Google states that clearing storage permanently deletes all app data. Check the game’s own settings or support information first, and verify that progress is linked to an account or backed up before removing data.
Free space on iPhone
Offload a game you are not playing
To turn on automatic offloading, go to Settings > Apps > App Store > Offload Unused Apps. When space is needed, iPhone can remove an unused app while retaining its documents and data. Its Home Screen icon remains with a cloud symbol; tap it to reinstall the app. Reinstallation needs a connection and depends on the app still being available. Apple’s iOS 26 user guide describes the feature.

Know the difference between offloading and deleting
Offload removes the app but retains its documents and data. Delete removes the app and its related data. Some apps let you remove documents or data separately, but the available controls depend on the app. See Apple’s explanation of iPhone storage before choosing an option.
Use an SD card only for supported tasks
Some Samsung Galaxy phones and tablets support moving selected files to an SD card. In Samsung’s instructions, you can use My Files to manage downloads and move files, or open Settings > Apps > [app] > Storage to find options such as Clear Cache and Clear Data/Clear Storage. Samsung says clearing app data resets the app to its default settings. Its Galaxy storage guidance was last updated June 23, 2026, for Samsung Gulf support; available features and menus vary by model and region.
An SD card is not a universal way to install phone games or expand the space available to every game. Check your exact phone model and the game’s own documentation before relying on removable storage. The same caution applies to external drives: moving personal files may help free internal space, but it does not establish that a particular game can run from external storage.

Before uninstalling or deleting game data
- Open the game and check whether it is signed in to an account or shows that progress is backed up or synchronized.
- Read the game publisher’s instructions for saving and restoring progress. Platform storage settings cannot confirm how an unnamed game handles saves.
- Check whether the game has an in-game download manager for optional maps, texture packs, or other content. Remove a pack only through a control the game identifies as safe.
- Keep in mind that app data, local saves, settings, and downloaded content may be separate. Removing one does not guarantee the others will be retained.
If you cannot verify how progress is saved, prefer deleting unrelated files or archiving/offloading another game rather than clearing this game’s data. Do not assume cloud saves are enabled just because the game has an account sign-in.
If the game still will not download or update
- Recheck available storage in iPhone Storage or your Android phone’s Storage settings after cleanup.
- Remove another retrievable download or archive/offload an unused game, then try the download again.
- Restart the phone if the storage display does not appear to update, then check it again.
- Use the game’s own support guidance before clearing app data or uninstalling if the issue persists and local progress matters.
These steps address storage pressure. A download can also fail for reasons unrelated to storage, such as a connection problem or an app-store issue.

Phone settings do not apply to Nintendo Switch. Nintendo’s archive and microSD instructions are specifically for Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED consoles; use Nintendo’s console guidance only if you are managing a game on one of those systems.
