Manage Face ID in Settings > Face ID & Passcode. After entering your device passcode, you can set up Face ID, choose which supported features use it, and review app sign-in access under Other Apps. To make Face ID—or Touch ID or your passcode—necessary to open an app, use the separate Require Face ID action on the Home Screen.
Set up Face ID
- Open Settings > Face ID & Passcode and enter your device passcode.
- Tap Set Up Face ID, position your face in the frame, and follow the on-screen instructions to complete both scans. Apple recommends good lighting.
- If you cannot complete the requested head movement, choose Accessibility Options during setup.
Your device passcode remains an alternate way to verify your identity.

Choose what Face ID can authorize
In Settings > Face ID & Passcode, switch on the supported features you want to use. Apple lists device unlocking, purchase authorization, Password AutoFill, and supported app sign-in among the available uses. A store purchase may still require your Apple Account password the first time.

Open Settings > Face ID & Passcode > Other Apps to see and change which compatible apps can use Face ID for sign-in. If an app does not offer Face ID, Apple says you may need to sign in to it manually first.

This setting controls whether an app can invoke Face ID for authentication. It does not require Face ID every time someone opens the app; use the separate app-lock feature for that.
Require Face ID to open an app
- On the Home Screen, touch and hold an eligible app.
- Choose Require Face ID and authenticate. Depending on your device, the system may instead offer Touch ID or a passcode.
- To lock the app again, quit it. Opening it afterward requires authentication.
For eligible downloaded apps, the menu may also offer an option to hide the app. Some preinstalled or default apps are not eligible; Apple maintains the current exceptions. Locking or hiding an app applies only to that device and does not sync with iCloud.

Use Face ID with a mask
Face ID with a mask requires an iPhone 12 or later running iOS 15.4 or later. It works in portrait orientation and is not available on iPad. For full-face Face ID, orientation support differs: Apple says iPhone 13 and later with iOS 16 or later can use Face ID in portrait or landscape, while earlier iPhones require portrait. iPad supports Face ID in any orientation.

What apps can learn
Apple says Face ID data is encrypted and protected by the Secure Enclave. Its documentation states: “Face ID data doesn’t leave your device, is never available to iOS or iPadOS, apps, or Apple, and is never backed up to iCloud or anywhere else.” In supported apps, “Apps are only notified regarding whether the authentication is successful.” Apps do not receive the face data associated with your enrollment.

Require attention before unlocking
When Require Attention is enabled, Face ID unlocks only when your eyes are open and you are looking at the screen. Apple describes this as an additional security measure. Review it at Settings > Accessibility > Face ID & Attention. Accessibility settings, including VoiceOver setup, can affect the defaults.
