To manage expiration-day risk, confirm the exact contract terms and your broker’s deadlines, then decide in advance what exposure you are willing to carry through expiration. A stock option may result in shares being delivered or received; SPX options are cash-settled. Exercise style, settlement timing and broker procedures can change what happens to an open position, so do not assume one product’s rules apply to another. This guide focuses on U.S. listed options and is educational, not individualized investment advice.

What happens to options on expiration day?

An option’s value can change sharply as expiration approaches. A long option that expires out of the money can lose its entire premium. A writer may face losses beyond the premium received. The SEC’s Investor.gov bulletin, updated July 16, 2026, warns that extreme volatility near expiration can cause an option to expire worthless.

At expiration, an option may be exercised or assigned according to its terms and applicable procedures. The resulting obligation depends on the contract: a stock or ETP option can deliver shares, while SPX options settle in cash. Check the precise series rather than relying on a general description of “stock” or “index” options.

Stock and ETP options versus SPX

Feature Stock and ETP options SPX index options
Settlement Physical delivery of securities, according to Cboe’s general description Cash settlement, according to Cboe
Exercise style ETP options are generally American-style; verify the exact stock series terms European-style; exercisable only at expiration
Early exercise or assignment Possible for American-style contracts No early assignment for SPX
Potential expiration result Shares may be delivered or received A cash debit or credit based on the settlement value

These are representative distinctions, not a rule for every listed product. Cboe describes SPX as cash-settled and European-style; confirm the current specifications for the contract you hold.

Can I be assigned on expiration day?

A short American-style option can be assigned, including around expiration. Assignment can mean buying or selling shares at the strike price, so an option position that looks small may create a substantial stock position or cash obligation. SPX options do not have early assignment, but their expiration settlement still depends on the final settlement value.

Plan for assignment rather than assuming a short option will expire unexercised. Also account for the possibility that after-hours price moves or late-arriving information affect the economics after the regular session. The applicable exercise and processing procedures depend on the contract and broker.

Check each leg of a spread separately

A spread is not a guarantee that one leg will neutralize the other at settlement. OCC warns that, in a cash-settled index spread, an assigned short leg and movement in the index before the long leg is exercised can leave an account with a settlement shortfall. The legs may have different settlement values or timing, so assess each obligation independently.

What time do I need to close an option before expiration?

There is no single customer deadline that applies to every option and broker. Exchange rules, clearing procedures, product terms and a broker’s own customer cut-off all matter; a broker may require instructions earlier than an exchange deadline. Nasdaq and the SEC both direct investors to check the relevant procedures rather than assume a universal cut-off.

Before the final trading session, verify the contract’s last trading date and time and your broker’s deadlines for exercise instructions and do-not-exercise instructions. If you do not want expiration exposure, decide how and when to reduce or close the position while the option can still be traded. Do not wait until the final minutes to discover that your broker’s instruction window has closed.

Expiration checklist

  1. Identify the contract. Record its exact root, expiration date, last trading date and time, exercise style, and settlement method from current contract specifications.
  2. Translate exercise into an account outcome. Work out what shares, cash debit or cash credit could result if each long or short leg is exercised or assigned.
  3. Get the broker’s deadlines. Check customer exercise and do-not-exercise cut-offs and the process for submitting instructions. Do not substitute an exchange deadline for a broker deadline.
  4. Review every leg. For a spread, identify the possible obligation and settlement timing of each contract separately; do not assume the protective leg automatically matches the short leg.
  5. Set a risk limit and action. Before holding through expiration, define the maximum exposure you can accept and the action you would take to reduce or close it. No particular action is right for every position.

What is the difference between AM-settled and PM-settled index options?

The key distinction is which index values determine settlement and when they are established. An AM-settled index option may use opening prices of the index constituents. Its definitive settlement value can differ from initially disseminated index readings and may arrive later, according to OCC. Some AM-settled contracts do not trade on their expiration date, so the last trading session may be earlier than the settlement date.

PM-settled contracts use the applicable closing or expiration procedure specified for that product. Do not infer the reference value or final trading opportunity from the words “AM” or “PM” alone: check the contract specifications for the calculation method, final trading session and timing of the definitive settlement value.

Why does 0DTE need closer attention?

0DTE options expire on the day they are traded. Cboe notes that near-the-money options become extremely sensitive to index movements as expiration approaches. That sensitivity makes it especially important to monitor the position’s exposure and know what happens if it is still open at the broker’s relevant deadline. A small move can change whether an option is in or out of the money, but it does not remove the need to check settlement mechanics.

For any option held near expiration, use the exact product terms and account procedures—not a general rule of thumb—to decide whether you are prepared to carry the resulting position or obligation.
