To change a domain’s DNS records, first confirm which nameservers serve its live DNS. Then open that provider’s DNS Zone Editor, enter the exact values supplied by the service you are connecting, and verify the result after allowing time for caching. If another provider’s nameservers are active, make the change in that provider’s DNS controls instead.
Before editing, find out where the live DNS zone is managed
A domain’s active nameservers determine which provider’s records affect visitors and email. Check the domain’s current nameservers before editing. If they point to your DNS provider, use that provider’s DNS Zone Editor. If they point elsewhere, update records with that provider.
You may be able to prepare record changes while external nameservers are active, but those changes do not take effect unless the domain’s nameservers are switched back to the provider where you made them. Check your provider’s documentation for details.

- With hosting: Go to Websites, select the site, then choose Advanced → DNS Zone Editor.
- Domain-only account: Choose DNS in the dashboard sidebar, then select the domain.
If the editor is missing, check that the domain is connected to the hosting plan and uses the correct nameservers.
Choose the record type by what it needs to do
Use the record type requested by the destination service. The record’s name identifies the domain or subdomain being configured; its content or destination tells DNS where to direct requests or what text to publish.

- VLAN Network Segregation: This router includes five preconfigured VLANs that isolate IoT devices, guest users, and work systems into separate, secure networks. Each LAN port and every WiFi SSID can be assigned to a VLAN, giving you complete control over how traffic flows inside your home.
- Dual VPN Client and Server Support: The router works as both a VPN client and a VPN server, supporting OpenVPN, IPsec, and WireGuard. You can route selected VLANs through a VPN while keeping others on your regular ISP connection, giving each device group the exact level of privacy it needs.
- Full WiFi 6 on Both Bands: With dual-band WiFi 6 support, the router delivers modern wireless performance across 2.4GHz b/g/n/ax and 5GHz a/n/ac/ax. It improves capacity, stability, and speed while remaining compatible with older devices, making it ideal for busy homes with many connections. Wi-Fi Mesh is available after firmware update.
- High-Performance Hardware Architecture: Powered by the IPQ6000 quad-core ARM processor at 1.2GHz, along with 128MB flash, 256MB RAM, and hardware NAT acceleration, the router handles multitasking, streaming, VPN traffic, and VLAN isolation smoothly without slowing your network.
- Flexible and Powerful Parental Controls: You can use trusted services like OpenDNS, CleanBrowsing, and Cloudflare for filtering, then add custom block lists, allow lists, and schedules. The router includes defenses against common bypass attempts, letting families create rules that match each user. Best of all, it's subscription free!
| Record | Purpose | Value format | Typical use and caution |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | Maps a name to an IPv4 address | IPv4 address | Website connection. Check for conflicting or outdated A and AAAA records before changing the root. |
| AAAA | Maps a name to an IPv6 address | IPv6 address | Use the IPv6 address supplied by the destination service. |
| CNAME | Aliases one name to another domain name | Hostname or domain name, not an IP address | Often used for a subdomain such as www. Follow the destination service’s instructions for the host and target. |
| MX | Routes email for the domain | Mail server hostname and priority | Use the email provider’s exact servers and priorities. A lower priority number means higher priority. |
| TXT | Publishes text associated with a name | Exact text string | Commonly used for service verification and email configuration such as SPF and DKIM. |
| SRV | Locates a particular service | Service, protocol, port, target, priority, and weight | Enter the fields specified by the service that requires the record. |
| CAA | Sets which certificate authorities may issue certificates for a domain | CAA fields specified by the service | Only add or change it when you intend to control certificate issuance. |
| NS | Relates to nameserver delegation | Nameserver hostname | Use only when the delegation or DNS service instructions call for it. |
Check your provider’s documentation for supported record types. For every record, copy the target and other required values from the service receiving the domain connection; do not substitute a guess.

- Get the required values. Find the destination provider’s current instructions for the exact record type, name, target, and any priority or other fields.
- Choose the record type and name. Some providers use
@for the root domain, while a subdomain is entered as its label. For CNAME records, enter the host without repeating the domain suffix; a common example iswwwpointing to the root domain. - Enter the exact target and TTL. An A record takes an IPv4 address; a CNAME takes a hostname, not an IP address. For MX, use the mail server and priority supplied by the email provider. For TXT, copy the exact verification or mail-authentication value.
- Check for conflicts before saving. For a root A-record change, review existing A and AAAA records and remove conflicting or outdated records only where appropriate. If your DNS provider has a CDN, check whether it should be disabled before changing the root A record.
- Save and keep a record of what changed. Make the smallest change that meets the service’s instructions, rather than replacing unrelated records.
Website records: A, AAAA, and CNAME
For an A record, enter the requested IPv4 address. A common default TTL when no service-specific value is supplied is 14400 seconds (four hours). Check your provider’s A-record guidance for conflicting records and any CDN cautions.
Rank #3
An AAAA record requires the destination’s IPv6 address. A CNAME points to another hostname, so do not paste an IP address into its target field. Some provider guidance describes 14400 seconds (four hours) as a default TTL when a specific value is not supplied.
Email records: MX and TXT
Changing MX records can redirect incoming mail, so use the intended email provider’s exact server names and priorities. If you are changing email providers, ensure the active MX configuration matches the service you intend to use.
Rank #4
TXT records often support verification, SPF, or DKIM. Copy the provider’s full value exactly. General guidance often recommends one SPF record and describes one DKIM record; these statements do not replace the current, provider-specific setup instructions. Avoid inventing authentication values or casually combining them.

Use SRV, CAA, or NS only when the relevant service or DNS instructions call for them. SRV records have several fields, including service, protocol, port, target, priority, and weight. CAA records affect which certificate authorities can issue certificates, while NS records relate to delegation. Check your provider’s DNS record types reference for supported types.

Understand TTL and propagation before troubleshooting
DNS changes can take up to 24 hours to propagate globally. TTL is how long a resolver may cache a record; it is not a guarantee that every network will reflect a saved change after exactly that interval. A four-hour default cited in some A- and CNAME-record guidance is a TTL value, not a fixed propagation deadline.
After saving, compare the name and target in the editor with the destination service’s instructions. Allow for caching before repeatedly editing a value: multiple quick changes can make it harder to determine which record is being seen.
Use bulk editing, imports, and history with care
Some DNS editors support bulk record actions, BIND zone-file import and export, and DNS-history snapshots. These tools can help with larger edits, but they can also affect many records at once.
