Tell your oncology team promptly if you are eating less or losing weight without trying, and ask about nutrition screening and a registered dietitian referral. Small, frequent meals and calorie- and protein-rich foods may help, but continuing weight loss needs clinical assessment: it can have several causes, and nutrition changes alone may not address them.
Why appetite and weight can change
Lung cancer and its treatment can affect appetite, taste, smell, swallowing, and digestion. Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, feeling full quickly, painful swallowing, mouth sores, dry mouth, and taste changes may make eating difficult. Pain, fatigue, anxiety, and depression can also get in the way. The National Cancer Institute (NCI) describes eating problems during cancer treatment; more than one factor may be involved, so describe your symptoms to your care team rather than assuming appetite loss has a single cause.
People with lung cancer are among those more likely to lose weight. Reduced food intake, treatment effects, or metabolic changes related to cancer may contribute, but weight loss alone does not show which cause applies to an individual. A clinician can assess the pattern and possible reasons.
What to try when eating is difficult
These are general strategies, not a prescribed meal plan or calorie target. Your needs may depend on treatment, symptoms, other health conditions, and the cause and pace of weight loss. A registered dietitian can tailor advice. NCI’s patient guidance recommends the following approaches for appetite loss:
#1 Best Overall
- Make eating manageable. Try five or six small meals and snacks spread through the day, eating about every two to three hours. An alarm may help if you tend to forget meals.
- Use your strongest appetite window. Choose calorie- and protein-rich foods, and eat the protein-rich part first when you feel most able to eat. Ask a dietitian which ingredients or foods fit your needs.
- Separate drinks from meals if needed. If beverages make you feel too full to eat, drink most liquids between meals; take small sips with meals as needed.
- Consider easier-to-tolerate forms. Smoothies, milkshakes, soups, or nutrition supplement drinks may be easier than solid food for some people. NCI names Ensure and Boost as examples, not as products suitable for everyone; ask your care team or dietitian whether a drink is appropriate for you.
- Keep small portions of preferred foods available. Appetite and preferences can change from day to day. Caregivers can offer food and practical help without pressuring the person to eat.
- Ask about activity only if appropriate. NCI notes that activity as tolerated may help appetite; follow advice based on your condition and treatment.
Tell the team about barriers such as nausea, mouth symptoms, swallowing problems, constipation, pain, or mood symptoms. Treating a symptom that interferes with eating may be part of the nutrition plan.
When weight loss needs clinical assessment
Contact your treatment team about new or continuing unintentional weight loss rather than waiting for a particular number on the scale. The sources cited here do not establish one weight-loss threshold that applies to every person with lung cancer. Ask about nutrition screening during treatment and a registered dietitian assessment if eating becomes difficult or your weight starts to fall.

Ongoing loss may involve cancer cachexia, a wasting syndrome involving loss of skeletal muscle and fat. Cachexia is not simply inadequate food intake and cannot be reversed through nutrition support alone. Persistent or progressive weight loss therefore warrants a clinician’s assessment, even when you are trying to eat more.

What if food and drinks are not enough?
If a person continues to struggle to eat and lose weight, the doctor or dietitian may discuss other forms of nutrition support. These can include tube feeding, also called enteral nutrition, or nutrition given through a vein, called parenteral nutrition. The NCI’s professional PDQ on nutrition in cancer care describes nutrition support as an individualized option for carefully selected patients, including when oral approaches are not possible or have not worked. It is not an automatic next step for everyone with appetite loss; the care team weighs the person’s situation and goals.
